Background
My research focuses on many areas of wireless networks and mobile computing,
with an emphasis on designing and evaluating protocols and applications. The
research spans a large spectrum from various areas viz. mobile computing,
mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) and
wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with a special focus on efficient data
caching & dissemination and energy aware protocol design for these systems.
Mobile computing is the merger of recent phenomenal advances in computing and
wireless communication technologies, with the aim of seamless and ubiquitous
computing environment to mobile users. Mobile wireless technologies are
changing how we communicate, conduct business and interact with our family,
friends, and community. In such mobile environments, database applications
are enhanced with useful features of wireless technology. For example, users
are allowed to establish a mobile office where they can communicate with
other users (mobile or stationary), access information from various
resources, and manage their work while staying mobile. This feature is
important for enabling the mobile workforces supporting ubiquitous services
such as weather forecasting services, financial market reporting, road maps
and directions, in-field work dispatch, law enforcement, environment
monitoring, military surveillance and the like. As a result, in such
applications working on data that frequently change, several megabytes of
data are exchanged among various networking points. Users need to receive
timely and accurate information in order to make critical decisions (e.g.,
stock market information and trading, command & control decision, etc.). We
can envision the scenario of the near future where mobile data access will be
readily available to the user anywhere and anytime. However, various
constraints of wireless & mobile computing environments, such as narrow
bandwidth, severe resource constraints of mobile devices add a new dimension
to the technical challenges before this vision becomes a reality. Thus,
sophisticated data management and resource management techniques are needed
to enhance the performance of mobile data access. My research addresses these
issues by designing protocols for cache management in different mobile
computing environments, efficient data gathering in wireless sensor networks,
effective data dissemination in vehicular area networks and distributed data
management in Internet of Things (IoT). The research also focuses on security
issues in these environments.
1. Cache Invalidation in Mobile Environment Caching is a potential technique where frequently accessed data items are
generally stored closer to the requester than to the origin source. Caching
of frequently accessed data on the mobile clients can reduce number of uplink
requests, server load, query latency and can increase data availability. As
28 of 49
cached data items eventually become invalid due to updates at the server, an
invalidation strategy is employed to maintain cache consistency so that no
obsolete data would be used to serve queries. The basic cache invalidation
strategies make use of periodic Invalidation Reports (IRs) and Updated
Invalidation Reports (UIRs) broadcast by the server. To overcome the
limitations of the existing cache invalidation strategies, we present a
synchronous stateful caching strategy where cache consistency is maintained
by periodically broadcasting Update Reports (URs) and Request Reports (RRs).
The design motives of our strategy include reducing the query latency,
improving the cache hit ratio, minimizing the client disconnection/failure
overheads, better utilization of wireless channel, supporting client mobility
from one cell to another, and conserving the client energy. The track of
cached items for each client is maintained at the home Mobile Support Station
(MSS) in the form of Cache State Information (CSI). Use of CSI reduces the
size of IR by filtering out non-cached items, handles long disconnection and
supports client mobility. In the existing IR based strategies, even though
many clients cache the same updated data item, all of them have to query the
server and get data separately from the server. It misuses scarce wireless
bandwidth and client battery energy. Our strategy periodically broadcasts URs
to minimize uplink requests and downlink broadcasts. To further reduce query
latency, our strategy uses RRs, where all the recently requested items are
broadcast after the UIR. Selective tuning is used to conserve the client
battery energy. This research also demonstrates an efficient handling of
arbitrary long client disconnection as compared to IR and UIR approached. The
client cache may become invalid due to change in user location and queries
may be aborted when the client moves between cells served by different MSSSs.
The developed strategy also maintains consistent cache for dynamic data
accessed from remote database server while a client is on the move.
Main contributions
i. Reducing the query latency.
ii. Improving the wireless channel utilization.
iii. Synchronous broadcasts to conserve client energy.
iv. Supporting long client disconnections.
v. Handling client failure.
vi. Efficient support to inter-cell client mobility.
2. Integrated Cache Replacement and Prefetching at Mobile Client Access efficiency is a critical performance concern in a wireless data
dissemination system. We have identified some characteristics of the mobile
environment that affect client side caching performance:
Various parameters of a data item viz. update frequency, retrieval delay
from the server, cache invalidation delay, and data size contribute
towards benefit gained by caching the item.
Data items queried during a period of time are related to each other. The
choice of forthcoming items can dependent, in general, on a number of
previously accessed items.
Cached items in a client are related to each other and therefore
replacement of a data item which is highly associated may lead to series
of misses during client’s subsequent requests.
Cache misses are not isolated events, and a cache miss is often followed
by a series of cache misses.
The association among data items can be utilized to make replacement and
prefetching decisions.
29 of 49
Consequently, none of the existing research contributions considers all the
above stated characteristics/factors. In view of this, the motivation for our
research is to design a novel cache replacement algorithm not only
considering the caching effect in the mobile environment, but also the
prefetching based on association among data items. To maximize the
performance improvement due to caching, we propose a novel cache replacement
algorithm, not only considering the caching parameters of a data item, but
also the relationship of this item with the cache set. Association rule based
data mining is applied to find the relationship among data items. We design a
profit function to dynamically evaluate the profit from caching an item. To
enhance the caching performance, the generated association rules are used to
prefetch the data item(s). We devise an innovative algorithm called ICRPM
(Integrated Cache Replacement and Prefetching in Mobile environment).
Main contributions
i. Data mining algorithm to generate association rules with only one item
in the consequent and one or more items in the antecedent. Our
motivation is to find several items that are highly related to the item
to be replaced. The rules with an item in antecedent are used to
perform prefetching. If there is cache miss for the antecedent, the
consequent can be prefetched because chances of consequent being
accessed during the subsequent requests are very high.
ii. Development of cache replacement policy that considers data association
rules alongwith caching parameters.
iii. Rule based prefetching strategy.
iv. Study of replacement and prefetching in integration.
3. Cooperative Cache Management in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Data access in ad hoc networks is an important issue where mobile clients
communicate with each other via short-range transmissions to share
information. Such networks present a constrained communication environment
due to fundamental limitations of local resources (computing, battery power,
storage, etc.), insufficient wireless bandwidth and users’ frequent mobility.
These characteristics of ad hoc networks make data retrieval a challenging
problem. Caching of frequently accessed data in such environment is a
potential technique that can improve the data access performance and
availability. Cooperative caching, which allows the sharing and coordination
of cached data among clients, can further explore the potential of the
caching techniques. In this research, we designed a novel scheme, called Zone
Cooperative (ZC) for caching in mobile ad hoc networks. In ZC scheme, one-hop
neighbors of a mobile client form a cooperative cache zone since the cost for
communication with them is low both in terms of energy consumption and
message exchange. For a data miss in the local cache, each client first
searches the data in its zone before forwarding the request to the next
client that lies along routing path towards server. As a part of cache
management, cache admission control and utility based replacement policy are
developed to improve the data accessibility and reduce the local cache miss
ratio. An analytical study of ZC based on data popularity, node density and
transmission range is also developed.
Main contributions
i. The cache discovery algorithm that is used to efficiently discover,
select, and deliver the requested data item(s) from neighboring nodes.
30 of 49
In a cooperative architecture, the order of looking for an item follows
local cache to neighboring nodes, and then to the original server.
ii. The design of cache replacement algorithm - when the cache space is
sufficient for storing one new item, the node places the item in the
cache. Otherwise, the possibility of replacing other cached item(s)
with the new item is considered.
iii. Cache admission control – this is to decide on what data items can be
cached to improve the performance of the caching system.
iv. The cache consistency algorithm which ensures that updates are
propagated to the copies elsewhere, and no stale data items are
present.
v. Analytical study of ZC strategy.
4. Cooperative Caching in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Using Clusters We present a novel scheme, called Cluster Cooperative (CC) for caching in
mobile ad hoc networks. In CC scheme, the network topology is partitioned
into non-overlapping clusters based on the physical network proximity. In
each cluster a “super” node called Cache State Node (CSN) is chosen to
maintain the Cluster Cache State (CCS) information for nodes within its
cluster domain. For a data miss in the local cache, each client searches the
data with the CSN of its home cluster. If no client inside the cluster has
cached the requested item, the request is forwarded to the next client that
lies along routing path towards source. A cache replacement policy, called
Least Utility Value with Migration (LUV-Mi) is developed. The LUV-Mi strategy
is suitable for cooperation in clustered ad hoc environment because it
considers the performance of an entire cluster along with the performance of
local client. An analytical study of CC based on data popularity, node
density and transmission range is also performed.
Main contributions
i. A grid based clustering scheme with well defined provisions for CSN
selection, mobility handling and inter-cluster and intra-cluster
failure of a CSN as well as ordinary node.
ii. Efficient cache discovery process.
iii. LUV-Mi replacement policy.
iv. The admission control policy that minimizes caching duplications
between neighborhoods and allows cooperative caches to store more
distinctive data items to improve the overall performance. In general,
same data items are cached in different clusters without replication
within a cluster.
v. Cache consistency scheme to ensure that clients only access valid
states of the data.
vi. Analytical study of CC strategy
5. Cooperative Caching in Heterogeneous Mobile Environment Sparse connectivity, limited energy and restricted memory of Mobile Stations
MSs) are the main characteristics of today’s Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET).
But, present wireless technology is now enabling MSs not only to have multi-
hop communication among MSs themselves, but to have direct connection with an
Access Point (AP) as well as. The emergence of such heterogeneous
technologies brings cooperative caching to reality wherein MSs can access
data items from caches at MSs in their neighborhood and can drastically
minimize query latency. This research assumes a heterogeneous mobile
environment where combination of ad hoc communication and infrastructured APs
(or cellular base stations) can be used to better manage the data needs of
MSs through cooperative caching. We call such an environment as Cooperative
based Access Point MANET (CAPMANET). We present a Hop Oriented Cooperative
Caching (HOCC) scheme for CAPMANET which helps in reducing the communication
overhead and the query latency. HOCC employs a hybrid Pull with Push (PwP)
mechanism to maintain data consistency. The caching scheme considers data
31 of 49
popularity, size, consistency and distance during replacement to optimize
cache content of MSs.
Main contributions
i. A Pull with Push (PwP) scheme that allows variable level of caching
consistency
ii. A cache admission control scheme that prevents high data replication by
enforcing a minimum distance between the same data item.
iii. Utility based replacement policy that considers data popularity, size,
consistency and distance.
6. Efficient Data Gathering in Wireless Sensor Networks Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are increasingly being used to monitor
various parameters in a wide range of applications ranging from civilian to
military. A WSN design is influenced by many factors such as transmission
errors, network topology and energy consumption. In highly constrained
wireless sensor networks, it is very important to conserve energy and prolong
network lifetime while ensuring proper operations of the network. Given that
sensor battery life should be spared to maximize network lifetime, a fairly
intuitive approach is to switch on at a given time, only the minimum number
of sensors needed to guarantee the network connectivity. Based on the above
observation, our research focuses on data gathering strategy which
significant improvements in reducing the energy consumption and thus
extending the lifetime of the network. Security is also a big challenge in
WSNs because of the highly constrained system resource, and the fact that
sensor networks are often deployed in unattended and hostile environments. We
are also working on security related issues in WSNs.
Main contributions
i. Design of energy efficient protocols to maximize the lifetime of
wireless sensor networks
ii. Security protocols for wireless sensor networks
7. Data Dissemination in Vehicular Area Networks Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have been envisioned to be useful in
intelligent transportation system having applications such as road safety,
advertising, location dependent querying, etc. To support VANET based
applications, it is important to disseminate data from an information source
to many vehicles on the road. Although disseminating data from a server to a
large number of clients has been studied in the database community and the
network community, many unique characteristics of the VANET bring out new
research challenges in data dissemination due to various constraints such as
very high mobility, frequent disconnections and network partitions, etc. Our
research focuses on protocol design for effective data dissemination for
VANETs.
Main contributions
i. Design of data dissemination protocols for VANETS
ii. Cache invalidation techniques for VANETS
