SAFE/Saving Antiquities for Everyone, Inc.
is a non-profit organization dedicated
to preserving cultural heritage worldwide.
We raise public awareness about the
irreversible damage that results from looting,
smuggling and trading illicit antiquities.
We promote respect for the laws and treaties
that enable nations to protect their cultural
property and preserve humanity’s most
precious non-renewable resource: the intact
evidence of our undiscovered past.
By creating educational programs and media
campaigns in partnership with academia
and the communications, legal and law
enforcement communities, SAFE encourages
ethical behavior to stop the trade in illicit
antiquities from destroying the history
that belongs to us all.
SAFE envisions a world in which looting
and destruction of cultural heritage sites,
and the marketing and collecting
of undocumented artifacts from such sites
will be unthinkable.
The SAFE BEAcon AwArd, founded in 2006, recognizes outstanding
achievement in raising public awareness about our endangered
cultural heritage and the devastating consequences of the illicit antiquities
trade, which fuels the looting of ancient sites and destroys our ultimate
non-renewable resource: the intact evidence of our undiscovered past.
This evening, SAFE presents the Beacon Award to an outstanding archaeologist
and social media advocate whose work has raised public awareness about
the illicit antiquities trade and the fight to protect cultural heritage.

Dr. Monica Hanna brings personal commitment and fearless professionalism to documenting and publicizing the looting of Egypt’s cultural heritage. Dr. Hanna’s eyewitness accounts of the ongoing destruction of Egypt’s ancient sites and museums since the 2011 Arab Spring uprising, combined with her archaeological expertise, have informed and inspired tens of thousands around the world, as evidenced by the rising number of supporters and followers via social media. Showing remarkable resilience in the face of many opponents, she has already, at the age of 30, contributed greatly to safeguarding Egypt’s cultural heritage and alerting the world to its current plight.
A native of Heliopolis, Egypt, Dr. Hanna completed her undergraduate degree in Egyptology and Archaeological Chemistry at the American University in Cairo and later earned her doctorate in Archaeology at the University of Pisa in Italy. In her dissertation, she analyzed the preservation of mural paintings in the Theban Necropolis using 3D scanning techniques. Dr. Hanna’s detailed knowledge of Egyptian archaeology and experience on a variety of projects has contributed to her effectiveness in strengthening protection for sites and aiding in artifact recovery in her native country.
While pursuing her academic degrees, in 2007 Dr. Hanna served as a preservation expert for the University of Pisa Archaeological Mission, Theban Tomb 14, Luxor West Bank, mapping the condition of important tomb paintings and conducting archaeometric and other analyses of paintings and objects. She continued with the Theban Tomb 14 mission in 2008 as an Egyptologist, updating preservation status information, conducting experimental archaeology research, and coordinating various aspects of the project. From 2005 through 2010, Dr. Hanna also served as Scientific Coordinator for CULTNAT (Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage of Egypt). In this capacity she managed several projects, including the Documentation of the Cultural Heritage of South Sinai: The Case Study of Serabit el-Khadim. She also served as a researcher and editor for the Memphite Necropolis portfolio for UNESCO World Heritage listing, and coordinated educational visits and research for the 2006 Asia World Expo and the Archaeological Map of Egypt project.
SAFE Beacon Award Winner Monica Hanna Archaeologist, social media activist
Monica Hanna (continued)
In 2010 Dr. Hanna worked with the South Sinai Regional Development Program in El-Tor, Egypt, as Culture Communications and Visibility Expert; and, after completion of her doctoral degree, she held a post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Egyptology and North African Studies at Humboldt University, Berlin from July 2011 until November 2012. Her research focused on investigating the relationship between the inhabitants of modern al-Qurna and local archaeological sites of Thebes, Egypt. The project also involved devising a community outreach program and feasibility study for a local heritage museum. This work is the subject of a forthcoming monograph with co-authors G. Tully and C. Näser, Contemporary communities and archaeology: Investigating the relationship between the inhabitants of modern al-Qurna and local archaeological sites (Thebes, Egypt), to be published in the TOPOI monograph series.
It was during this time that Dr. Hanna decided to return to Egypt to document the looting situation, which has become increasingly acute since the 2011 Arab Spring uprising. Her keen interest in technology and science, combined with a community-based approach toward the conservation, preservation, and management of archaeo-logical sites, have allowed Dr. Hanna to harness online technology to raise awareness about the plight of Egypt’s endangered cultural property. This work has expedited the recovery of stolen objects, effectively reducing the supply side of the illicit antiquities trade. Using social media to great effect, Dr. Hanna created and maintains the Facebook page Egypt’s Heritage Task Force, and has informed and mobilized an army of supporters with four social media campaigns: #Save_Dahshur, #Save_ Matariya, #Save_Antinoupolis, and #Save_AbuSir el-Maleq. These campaigns not only increased public awareness; in the case of Antinoupolis, Dr. Hanna’s efforts resulted in a presidential decree approving an increase in guards to protect the site.
No stranger to the press, Dr. Hanna has been interviewed in many international publications, has been featured in the 2013 documentary series Unreported World broadcast by Channel 4 in London, and was recently invited as a panelist at UNESCO’s screening and discussion of The Monuments Men in Paris. Dr. Hanna continues to work with the media and a group of volunteers to publicize the plight of endangered archaeological sites in Egypt, including Dahshur, Abu Sir el-Maleq, and Ancient Heliopolis. She also consults with government officials and recently lobbied for the introduction of new articles in the Constitution specifically created to protect cultural heritage. In addition, she was voted one of the seven “People of the Year” by Egypt Today magazine and one of the “Top Arab Women in 2013” by AsiaN.
Dr. Hanna’s perseverance, archaeological knowledge, and emotional investment in the protection of Egypt’s heritage position her as an effective activist and an expert witness in the fight against looting and the illicit antiquities trade. SAFE is pleased
to present the 2014 Beacon Award to Dr. Monica Hanna.

Heritage and Healthy Societies Exploring the links among cultural heritage, environment, and resilience May 14-16, 2014, University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA Whether on an individual or a societal scale, heritage and well-being are often seen as disparate concerns. When heritage is viewed as related to community well-being, its value is often reduced to economic development and tourism, rather than something that might be integral to wellness on a larger scale. But how can the collective remaking of the past in the present play a role in imagining a more sustainable and healthy future? The goal of this conference is to explore the application of the past to contemporary and future social challenges, specifically sustainability and wellbeing. Given the current focus on climate change, rising sea levels, and the displacement of peoples, the wellness of societies is a critical issue. But until now, heritage has had little to say about the subject. The conference will explore the relationship between heritage and three interrelated aspects of sustainability and wellbeing:
• Heritage and environment: • Heritage and resilience: • Heritage and wellness
Heritage scholars and practitioners from over 25 countries will present on these themes. Plenaries will be presented by:
• Michael Herzfeld, Professor of Anthropology, Harvard University • Mindy Fullilove, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Public Health,
Columbia University • Rodney Harrison, Reader in Reader in Archaeology, Heritage and
Museum Studies, Institute of Archaeology, University College London
