Dr Monika Rice, the parent of freshman Miriam Rice , spoke to 100 students and faculty about "Holocaust-Why?" on November 8th in the Lecture Hall. This was in conjunction with studying the novel, Night, by Elie Wiesel with Mrs Strada's English I Honors class. Dr. Rice is the Director of the Holocaust and Genocide Studies Programs at Gratz College in Pennsylvania. She volunteered her time to share her knowledge about the Holocaust and Hitler's persuasive manipulation of the masses during the genocide. For three years Jillian has volunteered with Northern Ocean in many different roles. This summer Jillian took a more formalized internship where she helped NOHFH with event planning. This role enabled Jillian to learn more about the intricacies of non profit management and fundraising. Jillian presented $1,250 to Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity, of which $275 will be the cost recovery for Gerard; a senior citizen living below the poverty line. Gerard lives in an "aging" mobile home in Whiting NJ that was in need of "weatherization" work which consisted of roof repairs, additional insulation and new windows. These repairs will lower Gerard's utility bills enabling him to have some additional money for essentials such as food, medication and clothing. Pictured with Jillian is Mrs. Suzan Fichtner , the Director of NOHFH. Mrs. Fichtner stated, “I am so proud of Jillian! She is an inspiration to her Donovan Catholic classmates as well as a beacon of hope for our future!”
