What is an EPCIS?

• Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) is

a specification that defines a standard way to share EPC

observations within and across an enterprise

• Evidence of an event in the physical world

• Observations consisting of “what, when, where, why”

• The sharing is aimed at enabling participants in the

EPCglobal Network to gain a shared view of the

disposition of EPC-bearing objects within a relevant

business context.

EPCIS Observations

1) WHAT?

This is the subject of the event which is the Electronic

Product Code (EPC) which identifies the object

2) WHERE?

This explains where the location of the event took

place.

3) WHEN?

This is where the timestamp of the event is recorded.

4) WHY?

This will explain the business step or operation

activities such as commissioning, packing, load,

shipping and receiving of the Electronic product code

• A repository of item-level event data.

• Sharing item-level event data between business partners in a standardized way.

• Provides Visibility of item-level that allows Traceability.

• Allow Business intelligence to detect inefficiencies in supply chains.

What is ISO 18186:2010?

• Specifies how freight container logistic transparency

and efficiency can be improved through use of an

RFID cargo shipment tag system and an Internet-

based software package.

• Consisting of

– System Composition : RFID cargo shipment tag

(our case E-seal), reader(s) and network platform

(including database, operational system and

related system software).

Case 1: The Seattle Times

reported (published April 5, 2007)

that 22 stowaways were spotted

by U.S. Washington Customs

hiding in a container.

Approximately 100 stowaways per year arrive in the port of Rotterdam by ship.

Case 2: According to Labor

Daily China on July 2, 2008,

goods valued more than RMB 1

million were stolen by only one

container truck driver.

The Urgent Need

• An intelligent system based upon RFID : that records the

information of container, cargo, container flow, as well

as the security information, and realize the online real-

time monitoring of the whole process of container

logistics chain by Global Network (such as the Internet)

• This is to guarantee the safety and transparent during

the container transportation and improve the logistics

efficiency and increase the level of container service.

By Using RFID E-seal:

� Reduce long queuing time at the Gate In/Out

� Improve efficiency of container clearance and real time

authentication

� Real time update of container information into system once tagged

container enters certain zone

� Provide real time visibility of container status (compromised/open)

• It makes the whole process of container logistics more

transparent.

– Know about the transport status of their cargos in time,

so as to reduce logistics cost and brings obvious commercial benefits for enterprises.

– prevent the loss of goods/cargo.

What is RFID E-Seal?

• Normally, a mechanical security seal is applied immediately

after stuffing and seal number recorded manually.

• Objective:

– is to minimize the risk of unauthorized access into the

container

– reduce risk of cargo pilferage and the introduction of

contraband.

• However, mechanical seals have weaknesses:

– Manual inspection is required on every container by

enforcement officer

– Unable to record date/time if tempered with

– Seal number can be duplicated and be manufactured

– Unable to carry additional information for cross checking

What is RFID E-Seal?

• A RFID tag with seal function

• Allows importers, shipping companies, port officials

and customs inspectors to determine, without a

physical inspection (automatically), whether the seal

has been tampered or compromised.

• Readers now can be placed in strategic places to

query the seal info and check its status.

• Additional memory inside the seal allows for storing

of information which can be used by

Custom/Shippers to double checking, thus providing

faster clearance.

How Does It Work?

Shipper @ Stuffing point

� At stuffing area, information of container and cargo are written into the

RFID Seal using the handheld/mobile device.

� The container door is closed and the RFID Seal will be affixed.

� Information of affixing/closing of doors will be send over the Internet via

WiFi/GPRS/3G and is reflected on the website, also showing the time and

location of the container and other related information of the container.

� At the gate, fixed RFID reader will retrieve information from RFID Seal and

then uploads them to the server.

� The system will give alarmed/alert to the officer if security of the tag has

been compromised – found to be opened illegally during transit.

� At QC, during the process of lifting the container into vessel, the fixed

RFID reader will read the information from RFID Seal again and upload its

information (the security condition of container) to the server for record.

� Likewise, it would give alarm message to if found to be compromised.

� If containers are found to be suspicious and had to be inspected by the

Customs officer, the RFID Seal can be legally opened by using authorized

handset provided to them.

� After inspection, it can lock RFID Seal again. The RFID Seal will

automatically recorded the opening date & time of the inspection as well.

� Faster clearance may be introduced for Containers with RFID Seal which

are not compromised and not suspicious.

How Does It Work?

� At unstuffing area, handheld/mobile devices are used to retrieve

information of the whole process from the RFID Seal and upload them to

the server for record.

� Unlock the RFID Seal for another cycle use.

• SIPG and Savannah Port have completed trial project

equipping RFID Seals, on the container boxes of ships sailing

from Shanghai to Savannah.

• Since March 2008, weekly sailings have averaged 350-500

TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per vessel between

Shanghai and Savannah.

• SIPG and Johor Port have

completed trial project equipping

RFID Seals, on the container

boxes of ships sailing from Pasir

Gudang, Johor to SIPG.

making preparations to go into

next stage of commercial
