management in 31 European countries (results of a

questionnaire)

– Feedback to the EC regarding the paper on infrastructure safety

management

Main focus: – Mid-Term Review of the European Road Safety Action Programme

– The three pillars of road safety • Infrastructure (results of the High Level Expert Meeting)

• Vehicle (eSafety technology presentation at a drivers‘ training facility), and

• Road user (national awareness campaigns and joint European campaign)

Participants: – Ministers of Transport from 34 countries, EC vice-president Barrot

Results:– Agreement on a joint European road safety awareness campaign (subject

will be either alcohol or fatigue)

– Expression of the need to exchange road safety awareness campaign ideas and material and to share the copyrights on spots etc.

Intermediate results until 2005: –17.5%, 41 600 fatalities Estimated results for 2010: 32 500 fatalities

-50% target can not be achieved without speeding up Young people between 18 and 25 are the high-risk group

(10% of population but 21% of fatalities in 2003) Motorcyclists fatalities on the rise:

+5.6% between 2000 and 2003 (while -12% overall) if this trends continues every 3rd fatality will be a motorcyclist in 2010 (every 6th today)
