Sponsored Research Projects/Fellowships

Project Title. An assessment and impact of urbanization in South Delhi on environmental quality and disaster management using remote sensing and GIS - Funding Agency - DST under women scientist scheme, Value - For Rs 10,93,000/- Status/Period - 2015-17. Brief Summary -The work involves an assessment of growth of urbanisation in south Delhi as assessed using temporal IRS data and its impact of certain measurable environmental parameters and recommendations for disaster management using GIS. Major Highlights/Objectives – The study examined the impact of urbanization on trend, nature, rate, location and magnitude of land use /land cover change etc. It resulted in limited forecast of the future pattern of land use land cover in the area. It analyzed the relationship between urbanization and emerging land use pattern in South Delhi

city. The study also assessed the changing pattern of urbanization and its impact on urban environment both qualitatively and quantitatively, It recommended several measures for disaster management and mitigation in the area.

Project Title. Detection and Identification of engineered surfaces and Objects using Hyperspectral data - Funding Agency - DST under Networked Hyperspectral Project, Value-Rs35,02,400/- Status/Period - 2016-19. Brief Summary -The work involves an development of spectral libraries in an urban environment for various engineered surfaces and Objects and development of algorithms for their detection and identification using spectral matching algorithms. Major Highlights/Objectives - Study resulted in generation of hyperspectral spectral library, strategies for detection of engineered surfaces i.e roads and roofs using spectral matching algorithms, anomaly detection algorithms and independent component analysis. The project used hyperspectral data acquired by AVIRIS sensor under SAC ISRO and JPL NASA joint campaign.

Project Title. Mapping Impervious Surfaces from Temporal Multisensor Multiresolution Data and its Area Estimation Using Super resolution - Funding Agency - SAC, ISRO, Ahmedabad, Value-Rs 20 Lac- Status/Period - 2016-18. Brief Summary - Globally, there is rapid urbanization and various UN estimates predict a possible growth of almost 84% in urban areas with an increase in total population size of 10 billion by the year 2050. Traditionally, ground surveys and aerial photo interpretation have been the most accurate methods of mapping of impervious surfaces and its area assessment but they are not time effective. Availability of finer resolution spectral, spatial and temporal data can facilitate cost effective mapping and monitoring of changing impervious surfaces which in turn can assist in various aspects of urban planning, management of surface runoff/flooding and in monitoring the environment. Major Highlights/Objectives - The aim of the proposed work was to develop alternative approaches and strategies for identification of impervious surfaces using spectral libraries, mapping and area estimation of impervious surfaces. It was also proposed to refine the estimated area of the identified impervious surface using super resolution methods/techniques and to develop approaches for assessment of growth in impervious surfaces using temporal, multi-sensor and multi-resolution data. All the objectives of the project have been met for Ahmedabad region. A new Euclidean based super resolution algorithm also has been developed.

Himalayan Research Fellowship (02 Nos). Funding Agency - National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS), GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment and Sustainable Development (GBPNIHESD) Kosi-Katarmal, Almora - 263643, Uttarakhand, India, Value-Rs 35,43,408/- Status/Period - 2018-21 ()In Progress. Brief Summary - Sustainable Developments in the Himalayan Region, Major Highlights/Objectives - Generation and Analysis of the data of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh of Western Himalaya to identify the potentially dangerous and vulnerable glacial lakes susceptible to outburst, predict the consequences of the GLOF and suggest mitigation measures.
