Main Image The main image is a low angle mid-long wide shot, the effects of this is a focus on intimidation. The low angle highlights the length and thickness of each weapon held making them seem more impactful and threatening to the reader; the low angle also means that when combined with the band looking into the camera, as has been done here, they look down on the reader making them dominant over the reader, this also demands the readers’ attention. The use of a wide shot maximizes the length of the double page spread and prevents the aspect ratio of the image looking unnatural by spreading it fully across the two pages. It also allows the capture of the complete band as well as some excess background which has been used as a white (ish) background for the article text that is very easy to read on. The main image is the focus of this page; its huge scale across the dps demonstrates this s and how the headline is transparent when obscuring it. The text on the left page has actually been widely reshaped in its format to make sure it doesn’t obscure the image, and the wide space between them actually further highlights the image making sure the readers know that this text is directly related to the main image. Main ImageThe main image is a low angle mid-long wide shot, the effects of this is a focus on intimidation. The clothing worn in the main image is a mixture of punk and biker stereo-types this is illustrated by the chains, hats and tattoos, each exaggerated by the shot angle; for instance the chains worn by each member are visible and none are worn underneath shirts as they would normally. These stereotypes all fit the tough-guy image that the headline describes creating an opinion for the audience to adopt regarding the band. Although this is the opinion the headlines have created the main image doesn’t completely satisfy this, in some aspects the main image actually refutes their dangerous image. An example of this can be found in their facial expressions where 3 of the band members are actually smiling and only the middle member looks displeased. These happy expressions contradict the headline and act as a new enticing device for the audience, as the audience look deeper into the image they will find that they may be dangerous, but question who to? This question the audience feel they’ve created themselves is actually a contradictive language feature designed to make the audience feel they are in control of their reading experience when the magazine is actually still controlling their opinion and further encouraging them to keep reading into the subject.

HeadlineThe headline of this dps (Double-Page Spread) is quite a long one. This headline uses the word “meet” in it’s wording telling us that this dps will not be a full blown review on the band’s activities but rather an introduction or re-introduction for the more familiar readers. As stated before, this magazine is very new-user friendly and that is likely the purpose for this page is to briefly educate the new readers about who the band are and what kind of personalities each member has. This purpose for a dps may appeal to this target audience because its an explanation of a band they may not know, however in other magazines with more informed readers with their own existing opinions this page would likely upset them, especially if it disagrees with their existing views on the band. The headline overlaps the main image, however the font used is also transparent, this is shown where the main image is visible over lettering such as the “e” in “Planet”; this tells us that while the headline is a key feature of the page it is not the main subject of the page, the main image is. The wording “Most dangerous” is simply “bigging up” the band to grab the audiences’ attention, other more knowledgeable readers or say metal listeners would know this is not the case and such a title may repel them, this once again indicates that the target audience of this magazine are new or casual lovers of rock who have not yet completely formed their own opinions on their bands.

LayoutThe layout of the dps indicates that this page is not the main article itself but rather an introduction to the band. The reason we know this is the case is because of the overwhelming size of the main image even regarding normal dps standards and the underwhelming amount of text on the page. The layout of text on the page has a clear hierarchy of importance: the most important and relative text is at the top and the lesser comments on the band are located lower down the page and in a smaller less unique font. Another feature to make the main image the subject of the magazine was the shaping of the text on the left-hand side of the page, the text was shaped to not cover the arm or weapon or the band member. The reason for this may have been to either, avoid making the text difficult to read as it would’ve been on a similar coloured background to the font and a changed font colour would change the house style of the page; or to exaggerate the image, this is achieved because of the big wide space between the text and image creating a white outline of the image embedded into the text.

Article/TextThe focus of the text on this dps is to entice the audience and introduce them to the feature band, especially as the target audience likely have only heard little about this band and so will not have a strong opinion on the members or their lifestyle. The main device used in order to do this are leading lines, lines such as “certain people want them dead…” these lines appeal to both those with or without an existing opinion on the band. This is because the readers are not told who these “certain people” are, and so even experienced readers who may have an idea, have no confirmation to their thoughts enticing even them as they seek to confirm their thoughts on the next pages. In the left hand text is a scenario that the writer has placed the band in an has stereotyped their actions and responses presumably based on past interviews and research. This way of presenting the band’s personalities is very unique and niche. It would likely only appeal to those in the target audience who enjoy a narrative in their music, other magazines may potentially dissuade their readers if they do not like this feature.; especially if it refutes their existing opinions on the band. The content mentioned in the text does heavily hint at a sexual nature however does not explicitly describe it as sex. This form of content would likely appeal more to audience members aged 16+ who are at least comfortable discussing and joking about sex.In the last paragraph some factual knowledge about he group is finally introduced, this however is very short-lived and after given the bait of factual information it is soon cut off, quite literally mid-sentence, which will presumably be carried on in the next page. This entices the reader to carry on reading and receive some factual information.

FontWith very little text on the page it is important to the magazine that they bring some attention to it so the reader does not just skip the page after seeing the main image. The way the magazine has done this is by using a variety of 3 fonts, which are each quite unique. This does not break the house style however because all the fonts are a similar dark colour and all their positions on the page originate from the upper left giving them a unity in terms of their layout style. Interestingly the font used on the “Gutter punks…” description is the same as the one used on the front cover with the cover tag “Sex, Drugs, Violence”, this affiliation in font will lead the audience to make the connection between the two pieces of text and subliminally hint that this text will be related to similar content without a word actually being read. This affiliation is made even with a skim of the page and as such, is very useful for drawing in readers who may otherwise skim the page or completely skip it after seeing how little text there is on the page. This device however draws the audiences’ attention by telling them this text is relative to the obscure description that interested the reader on the magazine cover.
