Early Wind Tunnel ExperimentationWe began the DPM II module with an aim to better understand the principles behind Wind (Aeolian) erosion-
and we approached this in two different ways; by creating physical and digital models. This page illustrates our experimentation with a cardboard wind tunnel and household hairdryer.

5Sandblasting Experimentation
Following our inital wind tunnel experimentation, I was given the opportunity to use a sandblasting machine at a car company local to my
family home. It was an extremely interesting resource as it effectively helped us to recreate the effects of millions of years of
erosion in minutes.
I used Malvern stone and began by testing the sanblaster on a single stone. It proved powerful enough to erode the stones and so I
followed by creating an arrangement of stones and varying the direction of the sanblaster to best recreate wind movement in nature,
giving us an exciting insight into ideas of shelter and exposure.

For this DPM assignment I decided to create a Photoshopped image based on my intentions in the studio project. The image displays a journey; From right to left, it shows my process of physical modeling and experimentation in order to better understand the way in which wind flows through our landscape. The merge of this into generic city streets portrayed how I intended to apply what I had learned into Cardiff’s urban landscape.

10Initial Concept
Stepped Section Showing Collection Of Natural DaylightConcept Plan: Showing Shelter and Exposure
Rather than concentrate my focus on the resulting rock forms from wind erosion, I wanted to look at shaping my concept in plan and section to create a comfortable enviroment for the public where wind can be quite disruptive.

I then revised my concept subject to finding these new precedents. The Re-sulting was a less literal approach to bringing together Aeolian ideas with architecture. The intention was now that each of the 3 buildings would be positioned purposely to focus on individual aspects of the Surrounding land-scape. This new approach has been sculpted in response to the urban landscape surrounding the site- in the same way that rock formations in nature are sculpted by Aeolian erosion.

163DS Max Digital Model
I created this digital landscape to give me the basis by which to be able
to laser cut a 1:500 plug-in model. My intentions were to show the massing
of my final concept in the context of its immediate surroundings.
In order to do so I took my Autocad plans into 3DS Max and corrected
any scale issues I had. I then ex-truded each individual shape to the
desired height and by selecting in-divual point could create the slopes
down to the central plaza area and the up to the car park behind
the site. Once I had extruded the 3 buildings to the necessary heights, I
transformed their individual corner points in order to create 3 unique
irregular buildings,
