ABOUT THE MENTOR BUILDING

The Mentor Building was built in 1906 and designed by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw a leader in the American Craftsman movement. The building is designed in a uniquely Chicago style with retained neoclassical elements. Unlike other buildings in the style, the Mentor buildings have clear base, middle, and top sections, reminiscent of European tradition.

In 1928 Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co. leased the lower floors of the Mentor Building with aspirations of eventually taking over the property. But things didn't work out as planned, and in 1947 the building was leased to the Darling Stores of New York. Twenty years later Carson's finally made good on their plans for the Mentor and purchased the building and expanded into the lower floors of the building.

In 1998 developer Joseph Freed & Co. purchased the building converting floors 3-5 into office condos and floors 6 thru 17 into residential condominiums. As part of the renovation the entire facade was restored back to the original design.
