Thank you for your interest in geographic information systems (GIS) and the Student Edition of the ESRI premier software, ArcGIS for Desktop. This software is made available to all Murray State University faculty, staff, and students through a license fee paid by the Mapping Applications Resouce Center (MARC), Murray State University.

The ArcGIS for Desktop Student Edition provides complete access to the core software plus a number of extensions. The Student Edition is time-limited to 365 days from the time the software is installed. Once the time limit has expired the student may request another license, and potentially, a software update. The offer is only available to current Murray State students, staff, and faculty.

ESRI requires students to create an “Esri Global Account.” If this is your first experience with ESRI, chances are you do not have a global account. This global account will help you manage your software downloads, licensing, and provide a method for managing any Esri E-Learning courses you might take. To access to ArcGIS for Desktop please follow these steps.

1. Email msu.mapping@murraystate.edu and request an Esri Global Account from the local license administrator.

a. Students enrolled in Earth and Environmental Sciences courses will have this request made on their behalf by their instructor.

b. Non-Earth and Environmental Sciences students may use the above email address and request an Esri account.

c. Students will received an email from Esri with sign-in instructions to access their Esri dashboard.

2. Sign-in to your ESRI Global Account a. Use the following URL: https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/arcgis-

desktop-student-trial 3. Enter your EVA code to authorize your software 4. Download the software you requested. Codes are specific to the software requested. 5. Download any other software, such as the uninstall utility, or the tutorial data. 6. Install ArcGIS for Desktop (instructions included below) 7. License ArcGIS software online (last part of the installation process) 8. Service packs & patches may be necessary. These can be downloaded from your Esri global

account dashboard.

Use the link provided in 2a. Esri’s page for accessing the Student Trial will load. Log in to activate your license using the “I have an Esri Account,” link. (Figure 1)

Provide the authorization code you received in your email from the local Esri Site License Administrator at Murray State University. (Figure 2)

After entering your EVA authorization code, the next screen will offer a selection of desktop software to download (Figure 3). Choose the software you requested, as the EVA codes are not interchangeable.

In most cases, the most recent software version is what you will want. In the example above, the most recent software version is listed on the top row, first option from the left, “ArcGIS Pro 2.2, ArcGIS 10.6.1.”

The following figure illustrates the screen for the download and installation instructions for ArcGIS 10.6.1 for Desktop. Please note the instructions. ArcGIS for Desktop requires a few prerequisites, such as the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 & 3.5 service pack 1.

Before installing ArcGIS for Desktop please ensure your computer’s operating system has been updated with all critical updates and patches. Once the computer has been fully updated and patched, the final recommendation is to temporarily disable any antivirus software during the installation process.

Before you install ArcGIS Desktop:

The sample installation described occurred on a Windows 10 desktop computer. While installations using other version of Windows should proceed the same, slight variations might occur.

ArcGIS for Desktop Student Edition is a single-seat license, meaning that the software can be installed on only one computer.

Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet before installing. The software needs an active Internet connection in order to license the software prior to use.

ArcGIS 10.x Service Packs are available. The Service Pack can be downloaded from within the Esri Global Account dashboard and installed after the primary software is installed. Consult notes at the end of this document for brief instructions. Installation of Service Packs is very easy. Simply download, double-click to initiate the installation, and click Finish to complete. Rarely is a Service Pack installation more complicated than that.

Download the following software:

o ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data o ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) *install this application first o ArcGIS Data Interoperability for Desktop (ArcMAP)

Install ArcGIS Desktop first; those instructions follow immediately on the next page.

Then, install the remaining two applications, in no particular order.

Once the software has been authorized and downloaded, we can proceed with installation.

These installation instructions should assist in installing ArcGIS for Desktop 10.x, providing screenshots of the installation.

Navigate to the folder containing the saved ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop install files. Double-click the “ArcGIS for Desktop” installation file. The file will “unpack” and eventually display the installation menu (Figure 5).

The ArcGIS for Desktop installation menu should appear. A number of options will be presented.

Locate the “ArcGIS Desktop” and “Setup.”

Click “Setup” to begin installing ArcGIS.

A few seconds may elapse before the “Welcome” screen appears; that is normal.

Once the screen appears, click “Next.”

The ESRI License Agreement screen is next. Reading the EULA is irrelevant; if you do not click “I accept…” the software will not install.

Click “I accept the license agreement”

Click “Next”

“Complete” is the default option. “Complete” will install all necessary ArcGIS components. If hard drive space is an issue, choosing “Custom” should allow modules to deselected from the installation process.

Click “Next

The Destination Folder into which the software is installed can be changed via this menu. Changing the default installation folder is NOT RECOMMENDED.

Leave the default Destination Folder alone.

Click “Next”

Python is a scripting language that comes with ArcGIS. Python scripting allows users to create programs that can be run against a large number of files, or pass data to other programs, like C++, or C# for processing not included in ArcGIS, or to automate map creation. Python is an open-source scripting language, and not unique to ESRI. Many resources can be found on the Internet for learning Python.

Click “Next”

This screen exists simply to allow the user to back-up to change an installation setting

Click “Next”

The next few screens may take several minutes to appear. At this point, the age of the computer, specifically hard drive, and motherboard, can play a role in how fast the installation occurs.

Practice patience.

Installation can take from a few minutes to several minutes (>20 minutes).

If you have arrived at this screen, ArcGIS has been installed.

The software must then be licensed to run.

Click “Finish”

This step will be unfamiliar to most software users. Rarely does software require a separate license process. ArcGIS does.

The Wizard should automatically appear after the previous step completes. If the Wizard does not appear, you can find the Wizard under “Start – All Programs – ArcGIS – ArcGIS Administrator”.

The Student Edition is a “Single Use” license.

Click “ArcInfo (Single Use)”

Click “OK”

After clicking “ArcInfo (Single Use)” the “Launch the Authorization Wizard for Single Use Products” area will become active.

Click “Authorize Now”.

The first option is the default option. Leave this option selected.

Click “Next.”

Software registration occurs via an Internet connection. Make sure your computer is connected to a network.

Fill out the *-starred fields on the licensing form.

Click “Next.”

These fields can be selected at your discretion. As these fields are *-starred, they are necessary in order to generate a license file.

For “Organization” and “Industry” use “4-yr University/College” and “Higher Education/Education,” where applicable.

As for “Yourself,” “student” should be an option.

Once the fields are selected, click “Next.”

The EVA authorization code will need to be entered to authorize ArcGIS for Desktop. This is the same code used hours ago within the Esri Global Account.

Once the EVA codes has been entered and recognized, click “Next.”

Optional extensions can be added to the “evaluation list” on this form.

According to the ESRI Student Edition web site you do not have to select any extensions. They will automatically be licensed for you.

When finished, click “Next.”

Software authorization occurs online. The authorization process may take a few minutes (5-10minutes).

Once the authorization is complete, click “Finish.”

Verify that the license correctly authorized and the software is ready to use.

On your desktop, click “Start – All Programs – ArcGIS – ArcGIS Administrator.”

From the directory tree on the left, select “Availability.”

The notification area on the right should update.

All ESRI software installed, including extensions, should be visible, along

with a few other notable details, such as the expiration/time-out date.

When your curiosity has expired, click “OK.”

At this point, your ArcGIS for Desktop Student Edition should be ready to use.

ESRI Global Account

As a reminder, users of the Student Edition should visit www.Esri.com and visit the Training page. Click through the “My Training” button, then, “My E-learning”.

Service Packs

As the Student Edition is a fully-functional software package, downloading Service Packs is routinely necessary to fix or enhance software functions. Make sure to visit www.Esri.com Support pages occasionally for downloads.

Troubleshooting & Help

The ArcGIS for Desktop Student Edition does not come with technical support. However, ESRI has an abundant amount of free help available to address a wide array of issues and concerns.

ESRI User Forums

User forums are a good way to discover information of technical issues, or to figure out ways to use the software in addressing a particular research problem.

Google

Chances are, someone has already experienced a dilemma and has documented a solution. Perform a google search, either formed as a specific question, e.g. “how do I create a buffer in ArcGIS 10.1” or simply by using search terms, like “watershed delineation ArcGIS 10.2”.

YouTube

ESRI has a YouTube channel, ESRITV. ESRITV has hundreds of videos demonstrating technology, from fundamental “how-to” tasks, to more sophisticated analysis, and topical videos on geospatial technology.
