Message from the President:Once again, the College of Fine Arts has assembled a wonderful array of concerts and exhibitions that contribute to the cultural life of Jacksonville and the Northeast Florida region. Our students and faculty are truly world class, and these performances showcase their talents. All of our programs in the College of Fine Arts bring internationally acclaimed artists to campus, allowing interaction and collaboration within the learning environment. These experiences culminate in the marvelous performances listed in this brochure. The richness and diversity of the season of music, dance, theatre, and the visual arts offer patrons an interesting mix that I am sure you will enjoy. I invite you to join our Friends of Fine Arts and purchase a season subscription, helping to support the College of Fine Arts as a significant member of the Jacksonville arts community.

Message from the Dean:I am pleased to present the program for this year’s Performing Arts Series in the College of Fine Arts at Jacksonville University. Our faculty has planned a diverse series of performances and exhibits that highlight the abundance of talent of both faculty and students. In addition, we are bringing to campus several guest artists to work with our students in master classes as well as showcase their talents on our stages and in our galleries. These world-class performers and artists bring a new dimension to our season and will provide our students with insight into the world of the professional artist. This year we celebrate two monumental events: the renovation of the performance space in Terry Concert Hall and the 100th birthday of the founding dean of the college, Dr. Frances Bartlett Kinne. I invite you to join our Friends of Fine Arts by purchasing a season subscription listed on page 22 of this brochure. Your support is key to creating these opportunities for our students and the community. I know that you will be impressed by the level of the performances. The CFA will host several receptions for the Friends of Fine Arts during the year prior to the events in this brochure. I hope to be able to meet you in the near future.

Dallas Brass“8” - Benefit for Southern Legal CounselSince its founding in 1983 by Michael Levine, the Dallas Brass has become one of America’s foremost musical ensembles. The group has established a unique blend of traditional brass instruments with a full complement of drums and percussion, which creates a performing entity of extraordinary range and musical challenges. The Dallas Brass repertoire includes classical masterpieces, Dixieland, swing, Broadway, Hollywood and patriotic music. According to Mr. Levine, “a Dallas Brass concert is intended for the entire family. Our ideal audience has a range in ages from 5 to 105. Our goal is to entertain and enrich by playing great music, while showing our audience how much we enjoy what we do.”

TERRY CONCERT HALL – $25

A readers theatre production of the play “8” focused on the court case filed in opposition to Proposition 8 in California. This law limited legal marriage to unions only between a man and woman. Much of the script is drawn directly from the trial transcript. This production is a collaboration between JU College of Fine Arts and the Southern Legal Counsel.

Iraqi Pianist Abbas Aboud

This 7th annual Concerto Competition is open to high school and college musicians and features a winner chosen from applicants throughout Florida.

TERRY CONCERT HALL

Chester Thompson, a virtuoso drummer with an impressive resume that includes Weather Report, Genesis, Phil Collins, Frank Zappa, and years as an L.A. studio ace, brings his two young colleagues to Terry Concert Hall for an evening of jazz, playing together in a manner that defies the conventions of the usual jazz trio. The concept of the trio as a unit, rather than soloists/accompanists, was pioneered by the Bill Evans Trio, which set a standard that is often emulated but seldom achieved in full. The Thompson Trio, while sounding nothing like the Evans Trio, approaches this ideal. Thompson, a virtuoso drummer who wields a pair of drumsticks like a surgeon wields a scalpel, presents a range of time feels, grooves, and colors. Chester and band mates Michael Rinne on bass and Joe Davidian on piano, each deliver outstanding solos while maintaining the same level of creativity and intensity in support of their colleagues.

Iraqi virtuoso pianist Abbas Aboud, fresh from a debut in Washington, DC, makes his first appearance at Jacksonville University in a program of classic and romantic favorites.

World class jazz drummer and band leader Ulysses “Bim” Owens will be stopping in to clinic with the JU jazz students and perform a concert with his award winning group. Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, Owens has reached a level of untouchable and uncompromised ability and creativity. He has toured and recorded with major names such as Christian McBride, Russell Malone and Wynton Marsalis and has now recorded and released three of his own brilliant and innovative projects. When not on call with any variety of top names, he is still hard at work with his own project groups. Along with one of his highly innovative ensembles, he will stop in to grace us with his teaching and talent. Ulysses Owens Jr is an artist “who takes a backseat to no one” (The New York Times).

Art Exhibit Opening Biennial Faculty Exhibition

A variety of media and styles will be exhibited by the Jacksonville University Visual Arts faculty. Work presented will include paintings, prints, photography, ceramics, sculpture, glass, and computer-generated imagery.

ALEXANDER BREST GALLERYOpening reception Thursday, October 6 from 5-7 PM

Joe Hedges, Archive Memory

Archives in the twenty-first century exist in both the dusty basements of bureaucracies and in the flickering personal no-spaces of the internet. Joe Hedges’ gravity-defying configurations of file boxes float in a layered simulacra of intermedia approaches from painting, installation, internet art and video. Representations of boxes are interrupted by abstract paint drips or digital glitches, serving as reminders of the changing nature of archive space and memory in a digitally mediated world.

Emily Sullivan Smith, Plight of Abundance

Emily Sullivan Smith is an interdisciplinary artist, employing silkscreen, digital media and sculptural languages in her work. Plight of Abundance focuses on the global debate concerning the planet and the role that human choice, convenience and privilege plays in sustaining or destructing nature. Each work investigates the tenuous balance between humans and the environment through the perceived abundance of natural resources declining at the hand of human kind. Drawing inspiration from the media reports and observation of nature, she contemplates the paraphrased quote of John Muir who suggested that you could pull a thread anywhere in nature and the whole world would come with it. Throughout the work, Sullivan Smith plays with the push and pull between content and aesthetics, aiming at engaging the viewer in dialogue of inference and questioning.

ALEXANDER BREST GALLERYOpening reception Thursday, January 12 from 5-7 PM

Nathan Meltz, Fracture in the Crystal City

Nathan Meltz’s art examines the infiltration of technology into every facet of life, from family and food to politics and war. In Fracture in the Crystal City, Meltz tells the story of the consequences of fossil fuel extraction technologies on a subterranean world inhabited by robotic humanoids and animals. The story unfolds through animation, printmaking, and sculpture, crafting a cautionary tale and preparing the viewer to resist.

Carrie Fonder, Even ExchangeFonder’s work is invested in the intersection of nature and culture and explores issues of gender, power and complicity through the use of humor and kitsch. Formally, her work slips between two dimensions and three dimensions as it investigates the real versus the represented. Materially, her work often explores devalued materials¬—from plywood to airbrushed acrylics—and frequently includes simple kinetic elements.

Elsie Hill, Fleeting Objects: Visual Representations of Discarded Architecture

Elsie Hill’s new body of work, which consists of paintings inspired by, and displayed in conjunction with, artifacts collected from demolition sites. Hill combines, rearranges, and manipulates the images and artifacts that she collects from demolition sites in order to identify significant elements. The painted images serve as representation of objects and spaces that have been deconstructed, deteriorated, or destroyed. When the painting is paired with the artifacts, the work toggles between simulation and incorporation of the former structures and offers a record of architecture discarded in the wake of urban renewal.

Laramie Project *

In October 1998 Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, severely beaten, tied to a fence, and left to die on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. Five weeks later, Moises and fellow members of the Tectronic Theater Project went to Laramie and over the course of the next year, conducted more than 200 interviews with people from town. From these interviews they wrote the play The Laramie Project, a chronicle of the life of the town of Laramie in the year after the murder. Jacksonville University Associate Professor Deborah Jordan returns to direct THE LARAMIE PROJECT, with set design by Brandon Lettow and lighting design by Ben Wilson, a play that reveals the lowest depths of hatred and greatest heights of compassion that lie within all human beings.
