DISTRICT STAFF WHO RETIRED PRIOR TO JULY 2001: The card you received from the Superintendent’s office upon retiring entitles you to attend free of charge any one non-vocational class (computer, business, trade and all online classes excluded) with a fee of $25 or less, per session (provided there are sufficient full-paying registrations for the class). You are responsible for the difference (above $25) should you attend a class with a fee greater than $25.

REGISTER EARLYPrompt registration helps avoid disappointment when classes fill quickly. It also helps avoid the disappointment of canceling a class due to low enrollment, only to find that last minute registrations would have filled it. Early registrations also make it easier if we need to contact you for any reason before your class begins.

Individual classes/programs may have specific registration requirements, with the size of some classes limited. Please read the class information carefully for instructions regarding your classes.

PRE-REGISTRATIONPlease pre-register for all classes. Walk-in registrations may be accepted for some classes, but since a class may fill up with pre-registrations, or may be canceled due to low pre-registrations, please call ahead to check on availability. Also, pre-registration REQUIRES payment, so we aren’t able to “just take your name” and hold a seat for you; that wouldn’t be fair to the folks who have paid!

CONFIRMATIONS: NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWSYou are registered for a class unless we notify you otherwise. You will be notified if your choice is not available. Occasionally a class may fill as your registration is being processed. Should this happen, you will receive a personal call from us. To help keep our classes reasonably priced, we do not send out confirmation notices.

CHANGES/CANCELLATIONSYou will be notified if there are any changes in your class, or if a class is canceled. Please make sure we have both your daytime and evening phone numbers so we may contact you. Efforts will be made to notify all pre-registrations if a course is canceled prior to the first class meeting.

If you need to cancel your registration, please contact us immediately since many classes maintain waiting lists. A $10 processing fee will be charged for all registrations canceled by participants. The processing fee applies to all refunds except for those classes filled or canceled by Community Education.

WEATHER CANCELLATIONSEvening classes will automatically be canceled on days when the Des Moines Public Schools are closed due to weather, holidays, or during breaks. Otherwise, whenever possible, the decision to cancel classes will be made in time for the 5:00 p.m. radio newscasts or the 10:00 p.m. newscasts for next day cancellations. Classes canceled because of weather will be made up whenever possible.

REFUNDSInstructors are hired on the basis of enrollment. For this reason, participant cancellations will be eligible for a refund (minus the $10 processing fee) ONLY if the cancellation is made within 7 calendar days after the class starts. Refunds will NOT be given later than 7 days after the start of class. Amounts $10 or lower will not be refunded.

Requests for refunds for 1-night classes must be made 48 hours prior to the class start time. Refunds will NOT be given for 1-night classes after the class has already met.

REGISTRATION BEGINS DECEMBER 8, 2016! MANY CLASSES START THE WEEK OF JANUARY 9, 2017!
