A BIG YEAR2013-14 promises to be one of the most exciting years in the history of Rhino Rugby.

On June 1st in Hong Kong The British & Irish Lions will play the opening game of their Tour against the Barbarians. Both sides will prepare for the game using a Rhino Dictator scrum machine and our world leading contact and training products; the match ball will be the Rhino Vortex Elite, the Official Ball of the 2013 Lions; and to cap it all the Barbarians will be wearing match kit and leisurewear supplied by Rhino Teamwear for this game as well as the match against England at Twickenham the week before. This range of supply across the spectrum of rugby products is probably unique in the game.

In 1977 to celebrate the Queens Silver Jubilee the sides played at Twickenham with a full strength Lions New Zealand touring team from that year beating a Barbarians side which included Gareth Edwards, JPR Williams and Gerald Davies, 23-14. At the 2011 IRB Rugby World Cup the average number of scrums per game went down to 17 from 21 in 2003 and line outs dropped to 24 compared to 33 in the 2003 tournament. In contrast, the number of ‘breakdowns’ (rucks or mauls) increased by 235% to 162*, compared to just 69 in 1995.

Centaurs Group, a sports facilities operator and the parent company of Centaurs Rugby, decided in 2012 to install a full length Rhino-Turf pitch at their Singapore sports park following the cancellation the previous year of their annual international rugby tournament due to extreme monsoon weather conditions. The Rhino CM 65 pitch was completed in September 2012 and to date the expectations of Centaurs in terms of their ability to stage matches in even the most inclement weather and most importantly to generate rental income from the facility have been met. Centaurs Chief Facilities Officer, Kristen Mansfield commented: ‘Our Rhino-Turf pitch is quite outstanding and has proved a game-changing asset to Centaurs. Apart from rugby, we host a multitude of sports on the pitch which has received glowing reports from many schools and sports clubs, making it a very valuable asset’.

Like many uK clubs Rosslyn park of National Division one have to be very careful to preserve the condition of their main pitch and surrounding training areas, particularly through the winter months when training can be severely hampered by bad weather. The installation at their ground in Roehampton of a Rhino Mini park was completed in January 2013, and

has been welcomed by the club’s coaches and players.
