WHAT WE DO

We commit to joyous play, rigour, and risk in equal measure, as we teach the craft of theatre.

We support student development by sharing our home: a bustling professional theatre with the

best artists in Metro Vancouver, working on our stage, behind the scenes, and in our classrooms.

We provide process-based learning in a safe, supportive environment, fostering growth as individuals

and as a community, with generosity and respect for others.

We train to strengthen skills that are vital for vibrant self-expression, helping students discover

their own personal best while supporting fellow classmates.

Welcome to Gateway Academy for the Performing Arts!

WHAT IS GATEWAY THEATRE?

Home to Gateway Academy for the Performing Arts—now in its 25th season, featuring professional

artists teaching the craft of theatre to children aged six to 18.

One of the largest theatre companies in Metro Vancouver—presenting outstanding award-winning

theatre featuring some of BC and Canada’s top artists, for more than 30 years. There are six shows

in our annual Signature Series season—four in our 540-seat proscenium MainStage and two in

our 100-seat Studio, as well as the Gateway Theatre Pacific Festival, a showcase of world-class

contemporary theatre from Asia. We are managed and operated by the Richmond Gateway Theatre

Society, a registered charity and not-for-profit organization incorporated in 1982.

An inclusive, diverse cultural hub for the City of Richmond and beyond—encouraging participation

and cultural diversity in the development and production of live professional theatre, and programs

that connect the community, including Gateway Academy. Our stages are available for rent to

community and other organizations throughout the year.

Gateway Theatre stands for excellence in the performing arts.

We live in an age where our children will need a creative, problem-solving edge to compete in the global economy. Repetitive tasks can be outsourced; innovation and ingenuity cannot.

Lisa Phillips, a Toronto writer, posted the following on TheArtisticEdge.ca; it was reprinted in numerous publications, including the Washington Post, and quickly went viral.

TOP 10 SKILLS CHILDREN LEARN FROM THE ARTS1. Creativity 6. Non-verbal communication2. Confidence 7 . Receiving constructive feedback3. Problem solving 8. Collaboration4. Perseverance 9. Dedication5. Focus 10. Accountability

Gateway Academy for the Performing Arts was conceived as a place to teach children theatre skills. It has evolved into something much more than that. We believe that harnessing a child’s creative powers gives them the necessary tools to pursue their dreams; the list above might as well be titled “Top 10 Skills Needed to Succeed in Life.” Healthy artistic expression creates better individuals and better communities.

For those of you returning to the Academy this year, a warm welcome back. For those of you considering enrolling your child, please feel free to contact us for more information about our curriculum and our teaching philosophy. And to all our students: have a happy and creative year!

Jovanni Sy, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Gateway Academy has educated youth in theatre arts for a quarter century, and I feel privileged to have been with Gateway long enough to see the far-reaching, transformative impacts on our students as they enter post-secondary training—some of them pursuing theatre arts, some in other career trajectories—and to listen to their experiences.

From a recent grad: “It develops one’s sense of empathy, perspective and versatility: skills that are necessary for any field. The development I underwent here constitutes much of who I am today.” From another: “My self-confidence has improved…so have my speaking skills [and] leadership skills….” A current student exclaims: “I learned my 3x Table from [a song she worked in class as a child] and I still sing it in class to remember sometimes.”

Parents: I value your long-term commitment to supporting our youth in their theatre arts development. In doing so, I strongly believe you are equally committed to their development as creative citizens, and I applaud you! Welcome, all, to our 25th season at Gateway Academy.

Q: Do students get to perform?A: Yes. All classes open their studio twice a year: once in December to share skills and the training process; once in April for an informal presentation of material from class. Level C classes and the Summer Musical Theatre Camp finish with a full production with costumes, lighting, props, etc. That said, we believe in first building a foundation of skills to support students, with a “process over product” approach.

Gateway Academy students registered in 2016/17 are welcome to audition for the Gateway Theatre 2016/17 Season!

Q: What’s the difference between the acting and musical theatre classes?A: Acting classes allow the time to focus purely on developing skills integral to all theatrical dis-ciplines—those transferable skills such as getting to know yourself in relation to others, listening, sharing ideas, focus, problem solving, trust building. Learning musical theatre, which includes acting, contains a lot of skills we can immediately see and hear (eg singing and dancing). Each of these theatre disciplines is a form of storytelling and is engaging, fun, and will help you to extend your comfort zone!

Q: Will students have work to do at home?A: Yes. Most classes do require that some practice and work be done during the week at home. Practice improves skills and allows everyone to move forward with the material in class.

Q: Will students have fun in class?A: Yes! One of the rewards of hard work is having fun. Not only does “play” demand commitment and concentration, it is a tool in the process of developing creative thinkers and theatre artists. Exercising imagination is key for every artist. You’ll be playing with rigour and focus and fun!

Q: Are there discounts for Gateway Theatre season shows for Academy families?A: Yes. Parents of Academy students can access discounts for Gateway productions. Contact our Box Office for details at 604.270.1812.

If you are a family experiencing temporary financial hardship, please ask about our Bursary Program. The Academy Faculty and Management gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Richmond Gateway Theatre Society Endowment Fund.

Q: Are scholarships available?A: Yes. Subject to funding, scholarships are awarded to returning students who best exemplify the Academy belief in “Creativity, Courage and Connection.”
