Abstract: The disclosure of information in the annual report is one form of communications between management and stakeholders as a way to reduce information asymmetry. This information asymmetry would only be reduced if the information provided can be understood by the users. In brief, this study investigates the use of graphs in presenting the selected information in the annual report. This graphical information is said to be much easier to digest as compared to conventional way of presenting data. The selection of government linked companies (GLCs) in this study was made on the basis that the accountability of these companies is higher as compared to other companies as they need to discharge their accountability to the public. The data were collected based on the instrument used in the previous studies. The result shows that in 2013 and 2015, all companies in the sample disclosed at least one graphical information in the annual report. Bar chart is the most frequent type of graph used by GLCs. The findings of this study provide insight on the practice of corporate reporting by GLCs in Malaysia.

Keywords: annual report, graphical information, GLCs, voluntary disclosure.

Abstract: This paper investigates the relationship of financial debt structure and corporate firm’s performance in Malaysia. This study focuses on Top 100 companies which are listed in Bursa Malaysia. Total companies examined are 51 companies excluded finance companies, trust and Real Investment Trust due to their different nature of accounting treatment, governance and regulatory. Ordinary least square regression later will be used in estimating the relationship between the financial debt structure and firm’s performance. Our results indicate that the financial structure choice in term of STD, LTD and TD are positively and significantly related to firm’s performance (GPM). In sum, the outcomes of this study is expected to contribute to the literature of study in financial structure and firm’s performance in Malaysia as there is still little study on this aspect from Malaysian perspective.

Keywords: Financial Structure, Capital Structure, Firm Performance, Total Debt

Abstract: The debate on Ricardian Equivalence has been discussed by many researchers. In particular, the debate about the government debt/tax is among the popular topics. This study is an effort to evaluate the findings of previous studies about Ricardian Equivalence. This study will look at the debates that look into the impact of taxes on consumption. This impact is very important because the impact of taxation will also affect the level of savings and bequest in the economy. The impact, then, will used to test the following hypotheses: tax might reduce the per capita saving and income. The hypotheses will use sample of several countries. The results will tell us about what happens if the debt/tax becomes permanent.

Abstract: The advancement of information technology and communication provides public, including tertiary students, with the platform to share knowledge through online mediums such as Facebook and WhatsApp. Despite numerous studies on knowledge sharing, little attempt has been made to understand the effect of trust on online knowledge sharing behavior. As there is a possibility of not knowing the users of the online mediums, sharing knowledge via these mediums is perceived to be risky unless one trusts the other users. Underpinned by the Theory of Reasoned Action, this study hypothesized that trust directly and indirectly predict online knowledge sharing behavior among graduate students in Malaysia. Using the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLSSEM) technique, data from a convenience sample of 159 graduate students reveal that the hypotheses were supported. The findings suggest that trust plays an important role in predicting the online knowledge sharing behavior among graduate students. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

[email protected]

Abstract: Graduate unemployment has become an intractable issue to most nations nowadays. Malaysian universities have put forth a wide range of effort to help the graduates to secure a job after their graduation. However, the graduate unemployment rate still remains high. University students have undergone a series of entrepreneurial training; however, many of them still prefer a stable employment to a challenging entrepreneurial business. As such, this paper was conducted to provide some insights on the influence of individual entrepreneurial orientation (IEO) on self-perceived employability among the university graduates. A total of 157 graduates were surveyed through a self-administered questionnaire. The analysis revealed that respondents agreed they possessed attributes of IEO and they perceived themselves as having employability. It further found that graduates’ IEO attributes, namely innovativeness and proactiveness have a positive and significant influence on their perceived employability. However, risk-taking attribute did not contribute to perceived employability. Although this paper did not confirm that all the three attributes of IEO could positively contribute to graduates’ perceived employability, it did highlight the importance of entrepreneurial attributes (i.e.: innovativeness and proactiveness) in increasing a graduate’s confidence in getting an employment. It further proposed that entrepreneurial training should be carefully crafted to suit the university students’ needs because it helps them to be entrepreneurial and also enhances their confidence in getting a job in the competitive job market after their graduation.

Abstract: People like to talk about others and it is a common phenomenon in workplace. Employees will find themselves producing, hearing and even participating in evaluative comments devoted to the third persons who are not participate in the conversation. Through gossip, people influence others behavior by performing social norms, punish those who violating and lastly spreading information about these improper behavior. Gossip revealed as an instrument for maintaining relationships and group coherence. People had to conform to social norms, fail to do so they might expel from the informal social networks. However, the right to gossip is not automatic and one’s have to be properly belong to the group to be able to engage and allowed to gossip. As group cohesion depends on the number and the quality of relationship ties, many people use gossip to build closeness to someone else. Thus, this study will investigate if the factors that contribute to the group cohesion will predict gossip behavior. Using survey method, we hope that this study will be useful to further understand how gossip can play a valuable role in organization. If we know how gossip works especially in a workplace, we can manage and control it.

Abstract: The development of social network platforms enables people to communicate with each other easily. An interesting phenomenon is that some people reconstruct their identity when interacting with others on social network platforms. Previous study mentioned vanity as one important motivation for online identity reconstruction. However, existing research about vanity were mainly in business domain. More detailed research about vanity in the context of social network platforms is still called for. Adopting quantitative research methods, the current research investigated gender differences in two aspects of vanity, physical vanity and achievement vanity. An online survey was conducted on QQ, a social network platform from China. Totally 189 responses were collected. The results reveal that men value personal achievements more than physical attractiveness. In comparison to women, men are more likely to be motivated by achievement vanity when reconstructing identity on social network platforms. In contrast, when compared to men, women are more likely to be motivated by physical vanity when they reconstruct identity on social network platforms. The findings are consistent with social role theory, indicating that males and females behave in gender-specific ways.

Abstract: Malaysia and China have been enjoying cordial relationship since 1974. Media have always been used as a major instrument in foreign policy and international negotiation. In 2015, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang paid an official visit to Malaysia at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Abdul Razak. This study aimed to examine the framing of Malaysia-China relations as well as Premier Li’s visit to Malaysia by the mainstream English and Chinese newspapers in Malaysia, as well as the mainstream Chinese-language newspapers in China. The findings indicated that the newspapers reported the topics with different intensity and prominence, while employing different news sources. Economics and trade was found to be the most salient frame in the coverage by both the Malaysian and Chinese newspapers. In addition, this study also found that both Malaysian and Chinese newspapers used neutral valence in reporting about Malaysia-China diplomacy and Premier Li’s visit to Malaysia. The frame built by the newspapers can be attributed to the fact that they have the inclination to serve the political and economic vested interests of their own countries.

Abstract: The digital era is known for technological breakthroughs in knowledge exchange through portable computing devices that include android and iOS smart phones. These gadgets, which have become a necessity for many, offer numerous advertising opportunities for companies to reach a wide pool of potential customers. Mobile advertising holds the best promise for one-to-one communication and provides avenues for direct and personalised marketing. Previous studies on consumer attitudes towards mobile advertising have generated conflicting results. This paper conceptualizes the effect of mobile advertising content on buying intention in a framework derived from past models and theories of technology acceptance. In light of the high purchase intentions of the younger generation in Malaysia, antecedents previously used in predicting the behavioural response of consumers towards mobile advertising and purchase intention were reexamined and combined with the personalization factor. Additionally, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control are proposed to have considerable impact on the purchase intentions of consumers in Malaysia. It is hoped that the proposed framework will lead to further clarity about the importance of mobile advertising content on behavioural response and therefore benefit the marketing efforts of companies by providing valuable insights on factors that influence the buying intentions of Malaysian consumers.

Abstract: Government of Malaysia has announced a minimum wage of RM900 per month for the peninsula and RM800 per month for East Malaysia in 2010. However, government again announced the minimum wages is going to increase effectively in July 2016 to RM1000 (11%) for peninsular and RM920 (15%) for East Malaysia. It is expected to boost productivity and a more equitable distribution of income between capital owners and workers. Arguments arise among those against the increment in minimum wage that it interferes with market forces in wage setting, increases business costs and leads to lower profit earned by firms. Thus, this paper tries to investigate the relationship between the minimum wage and profitability of a firms. Does this wage policy hurt the producer so much or not? Using the time series data, the finding shows that the wages were significantly raised and firm profitability was significantly reduced by the minimum wage. However, no significant effects on labour demand. If the rise in productivity growth matches the rise in wages, this will result in a lower cost of production and companies may absorb the rise in unit labor cost.

Abstract: The number of adult learners is increasing; hence, studies on adult learners and their learning process are pertinent. A few factors seem to influence them such as motivation, their background environment and cultural values. Social and cultural values have a major role in the learning process of adult learners. They may help to either escalate or inhibit the learning process. The Malays are considered as a collective society, which is common among Asian countries. A collective society places greater importance on societal commitments rather than the individuals. As such, it is pertinent to determine if cultural values among the Malay adult learners influence their learning capacities where individual needs may precede societal needs. In addition, the study intends to identify if different values would yield different influence on the adult learners. On top of that, the study also looks at the relationship between marital status, gender and cultural values. The study is an exploratory study on the influence of cultural values on the Malay adult learners and employs the quantitative approach. A set of questionnaire was given to a group of forty (40) Malay adult learners studying for the first degree via the long distance mode from a local university. The questionnaire is the Cultural Orientation Framework Inventory (COFI) that was developed based on four prominent cultural values of the Malays-harmony (HM), maintain face (MF), sensitivity (SN) and collective society (CS). The instrument yielded strong reliability index (Cronbach's Ã_±=0.75) which ensured its reliability. Data was analyzed using SPSS ver. 22 to answer research questions set forth by the study. It was found that the Malay adult learners are very much influenced by their cultural values. The respondents in the study posted an average score of 59.2 that was well within the range of scores that would indicate a strong cultural influence of 52-68. Maintaining face (MF) and sensitivity (SN) were found to have a stronger influence on the Malay adult learners as compared to the other two cultural values-Harmony (HM) and Collective society (CS). However, the study found that there is no significant relationship between gender and all cultural values (P>0.05). Marital status also seems to indicate no significant correlation to all cultural values (P>0.05). These findings would help trainers and facilitators of Malay adult learners to plan learning approaches that would engage the learners better and ensure that the learning activities run smoothly.

Abstract: Reading has always been considered a crucial contributing factor in human advancement which is at the same time affecting one’s intellectual and emotional growth. However in Malaysia, reading culture has seemingly not significantly changed as it was observed in the study of Pandian (2000) that only 20% are ‘regular readers’ and the rest of Malaysian populations are ‘reluctant readers’. It was also found that when they were preparing for examinations, only then they spent time reading various materials. Nevertheless, with rapid development in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) taking place, it has impacted education system centred particularly on reading exercise. This is established by Hooper & Herath (2014) that reading habit has been affected by the technology which has changed the pattern of brain absorption of information. However, adolescents are reported devoting much more time reading digital resources and spending extra time to skim, download and browse information on the Internet (Liu, 2005). Therefore, current study aimed primarily at comparing reading habit percentage between print and screen-based of the respondents as well as investigating relationship between numbers and types of print-based materials. Quantitative data were collected and a questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. A total of 61 diploma students from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Pahang, Raub Campus, Malaysia were chosen and Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient was employed to analyse their views. The results revealed students’ preferences in using traditional paper materials and how ICT has presented possibilities in encouraging students’ reading habits to develop. It is anticipated that future researches in the area will benefit from the findings and suggestions provided in this study.

Abstract: Managing time for academic responsibilities at the university level is different from the secondary school level. At the secondary school level, learning includes explanation in detail by the teacher and is fully guided. In addition, time allocation for the completion of an exercise is described, scheduled, reminded and monitored. At the university level, on the other hand, learning mostly takes place in lecture mode, which includes superficial information and requires students’ self-learning to explore the topic(s) further. The researchers have observed that university students often complain about running out of time when they are assigned multiple assignments and, thus, feel frustrated for not being able to submit them before the deadlines. This paper reports a needs analysis survey regarding time management skills among students in a local university. Using self-evaluated questionnaire as a method of data collection, the findings indicate that most of the respondents do need time management skills for their academic responsibilities. The overall findings conclude that most students, regardless of their nature of study and level of study programme need a proper guidance in managing their time effectively. Such findings call for an intervention programme for time management skills to be drawn in assisting students in managing learning time on their own.

Abstract:  This paper presents users’ perception on the use of a mobile application of bilingual technical glossary called, AMIT (Aplikasi Mudah Istilah Teknikal). The development of this application is motivated by the need of the technical students in Malaysia to comprehend the terminology learned in English in their mother tongue (in this case, Bahasa Malaysia). This is because, failure to correctly understand a certain terminology or concept, may result in failure to find solution to any related problem in the field. However, the only bilingual reference published by the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (the country’s Literary Agency) specifically in the engineering field is available in the hardcopy, bulky and out-dated version. With the fast technological development nowadays, one of the most convenient ways to retrieve information is through apps software. However, to date, the available electronic dictionary apps specifically for engineering terminology are all in English. Thus, AMIT is presented as a solution to the problem. Although the development of the application is still at its infant stage, the users’ acceptance has been overwhelming. Using self-evaluated questionnaire to evaluate users’ perception towards AMIT’s facilitative role in the learning process, the findings indicate that most of the respondents perceived the application as a convenient, practical and quick source of reference compared to the conventional, hard copy terminology book. AMIT is also valued in terms of its mobility and compatibility for any smartphones, making it usable as an education tool and digital content for engineering students. Further works for AMIT are also recommended such as making it more interactive with pictures and enhanced examples and quizzes.

Abstract: In the learning process, teamwork is often a crucial part where students learn to work together using their individual skills despite any personal conflict. Students often enjoy learning in teams and developing teamwork skills, but criticize team assessment as unfair if there is equal reward for unequal contribution. In order to evaluate these team work skills, a peer assessment often used to measure the performance each of the team members. Peer assessment can be defined as the responsibility of assessing work of peers against various set of assessment criteria. It’s one of powerful tools for the students to have better understanding on assessment criteria and also transfer certain percentage of ownership of the assessment process and marks to them that subsequently will help increasing their self-motivation and team work skills. Group assignment is one type of assessments that is widely used by the lecturers in UiTM (Perak) especially in the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying (FSPU). However no study has been conducted to measure the level of awareness among the lecturers. Thus, this research seek to identify the level of awareness of peer assessment among the lecturers in UiTM ( Perak). In addition, this research will determine the most preferable medium for peer assessment by the students. To achieve the objectives of this research, data collection through survey analysis method were used. Set of 50 questionnaires was distributed to the lecturers in UiTM (Perak). Data from the questionnaire survey was analysed quantitatively using descriptive statistics involving frequency and percentage distribution by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The finding from this research clearly shows that most of the respondent answer completely agree and agree for all of the questions which lead to high awareness about peer review assessment for their students. We also found that most respondents who have high awareness preferred online and paper as their medium of peer assessment. It is hoped that this preliminary study will be used as indicator to shows that the need of development of on line peer assessment.

Abstract: Nowadays, the quality management system (QMS) had been acknowledged as an important part in all business area including higher educational institutions. This system was introduced as one of the factors as the determination of the quality of product upon the completion of the studies. Prior to this matter, a good decision-making system was developed as a tool to improve quality management system and products as well. Without a good decision-making system, the decision-making system processes become useless. Hence, the QMS does not meet the key performance index target. This paper presents a part of the system which provides a program outcome data dashboard to improve student’s outcomes performances involved in accessing and interacting with visualized data that enable better decision-making. The information required by the head of the program (KP) in making strategies decision was in one placed call dashboard. This dashboard provides the concept of storytelling known as graphical visualization dashboard which gathered all the information of program outcomes for each course of the program offered. It helps KP to quickly examine a large amount of data, exposed trend and issues effectively. As a result, it assists KP to figure out the main problems and planning the right action to the issues. Besides, decision-making process becomes more time saving without spending countless hours on a large amount of data and reports.

Abstract: Programming is a challenging subject to learn because it contains abstract concepts, requires understanding on syntax and semantics, the need to acquire different set of skills, and the need of all those skill in order to applied problem solving techniques; thus make it difficult to learn by traditional method. Multimedia approach is one good solution to be applied in the teaching and learning process for introductory programming subject since it can incorporate different learning skill at the same time. The survey had been conducted targeting undergraduate computer science students in local university and the result of the study show that there are four topics (polymorphism concept, recursion, pointers and problem solving strategies), considered as the most difficult concepts to be learned in introductory programming courses among local undergraduate computer science students and their current motivation state of learning programming is positively high, though most of them think programming subject is a tough subject to learn. By using topics from the survey result as an example, a technique that can be used to assist in decision making for choosing correct multimedia element used in multimedia approach, called Chain Relation Approach had been proposed.

Abstract: Group discussion is one of the assessments in almost all English proficiency subjects. In this assessment, candidates are required to display a variety of speaking skills that are essential to having an effective group discussion. One of the most important skills is turn-taking strategies. Poor grasp of turn-taking strategies may cause candidates to face difficulty in participating in the discussion or even cause the discussion to come to a complete halt. This is often the case for low proficiency students who are unable to apply the correct turn-taking strategies properly. Because of this deficiency, low proficiency students often turn to other methods to ensure their participation during the group discussion. This study sets out to document and analyze turn-taking strategies employed by low-proficiency students by ESL learners.

Abstract: Evidence suggests that technology enables teaching and learning to be more enhanced. One example where technology is used nowadays is through the use of mobile app. In the market, numerous mobile app software are developed for smartphones’ users for their convenience. For learning, particularly the learning of vocabulary, mobile apps are developed to assist young and adult learners to learn vocabulary in entertaining ways. Nevertheless, a primary concern on the use of mobile apps for the purpose of learning vocabulary is related to the players’ perceived usefulness and attitudes since they are the ones who will determine the level of acceptance of a particular mobile app. The current study, therefore, aims at identifying whether or not there are significant differences in male and female students’ perceived usefulness and attitudes in using VocBlast; a mobile vocabulary app to learn engineering and technology vocabulary. The study employed a survey method in collecting its data among 129 students studying at a higher education level in the East Coast of Malaysia. The results from the study revealed that there were no significant differences for male and female students in relation to their perceived usefulness and attitudes while playing VocBlast. These results may be explained by the fact that VocBlast is still new to them, and, thus more time is required to make them familiar with the games in the app. Moreover, having only 30 to 40 minutes to play the games for once, seemed to be too short for the students to show a positive attitude towards the app.

Abstract: Good corporate governance companies are associated with superior financial performance. The better the governance practice of companies the better the performance and the lower probability of financial distress. This paper examines whether there is any significant difference in probability of financial distress of companies with good corporate governance and weak corporate governance. Top-Ranked MSWG ranked companies representing good quality of corporate governance practices and Non-Ranked companies representing weak or poor quality of corporate governance practices. Probability of financial distress is measured using Altman Z-score. Lower probability of financial distress is found in the good corporate governance companies. However, it was found that there is no significant difference between good and weak companies in their categories of financial distress. This reveals that whether a firm has high or low quality of corporate governance, the chances that the firm being predicted as distress, healthy or grey area is almost the same regardless of their corporate governance practice.

Abstract: E-filing has been implemented in Malaysia since eight years ago. However, there are still taxpayers who are not using the e-filing services due to lack of awareness of the system and fear of using any internet services. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the usage of e-filing systems among individual taxpayers at Inland Revenue Board Malaysia Johor Bahru Branch. The study examines the factors that might influence taxpayers’ level of awareness to use e-filing based on the theories of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Using simple random sampling, the survey was conducted among 95 individual taxpayers that come to Inland Revenue Board Malaysia in Johor Bahru Branch from the period of October to November 2015. It was found that respondents have high usage of e-filing. The results showed that perceived ease of use, perceived subjective norms and perceived behavioral control have a significant relationship with the taxpayers usage of e-filing. Conversely, the perceived usefulness and tax knowledge did not have a significant relationship with taxpayers’ usage of e-filing. It is hoped that with the current e-filing promotion usage among taxpayers, it will increase the usage of e-filing among taxpayers in Malaysia.

Abstract: Recent researchers have focused on investigating the effect of personality traits on the continuance usage intention of consumers. Personality reflects the exceptional features of human beings, the characteristics that defined our essence and reflected in all our thoughts and actions. Eventually, as the usage of internet has shown a tremendous increase world-wide and particularly in Malaysia, it is reasonable to investigate its usage in terms of personality perspectives. Since the level of internet usage is voluntary rather than mandated, so it is more likely to reflect personal motives, needs, values, preferences and other personality attributes. Moreover, past researchers also had predicted that there is a possibility that future technology adoption decision will be more concerned on human nature compared to usefulness factors. As such this research investigated the influence of personality traits (Openness to Experience and Agreeableness) towards continuance usage intention. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires upon those taxpayers who are easily reachable in main cities in Malaysia. Data was analyzed using the Partial Least Squared Method (PLS). Results indicated that agreeableness has a significant relationship towards perceived usefulness and confirmation. Openness to experience has significant relationship towards confirmation but insignificant relationship towards perceived usefulness.

Abstract: Conflict is actually a disagreement between parties and usually it inevitable in construction project. Many previous researchers have agreed that a conflict take away the success of the project in terms it cannot be done within allocated and expected time, cost and quality, which is then often accompanied by the destruction of individual and good working relationships. Besides, there are also studies which clarifiy that the conflict in construction industry is not just a problem but it is worse than that. So, the objective of this paper is to identify the significant causes of the conflict in human behavior aspect that influences the performance of professional parties. The questionnaire survey have been distributed by hand or via email to the potential respondents at Perak. The result concluded that there are three significant causes of conflict which are (i) different professions that create dissimiliar perception among professional parties, (ii) poor communications among the professional parties and (iii) mistrust in the performance of duties in teamwok meanwhile the major impact is increased due the stressful working environment. Integrating or collaborative method is also highly preferred by respondents when dealing with conflicts. It could also be concluded that the success in construction projects mainly depends on how well professional parties handle conflicts.

Abstract: The socio-economic challenges caused by ageing populations have encouraged many countries to re-evaluate the place of the elderly in society as well as to adopt measures in encouraging them to be participative. In recent decades, crowdsourcing has been identified as a rapid growth of innovative internet-based information and communication technologies in giving the opportunities to educational organizations to reach their goals. With their accumulated skills and knowledge, academic retirees can be resourceful to society. However, their knowledge and experiences seem to be undervalued and underutilized. Retired academics have better opportunity to extend their contribution in the society as their valuable knowledge is more appreciated than people from other background. Retired academics tend to be able to fulfil their desire for professional continuity following retirement more markedly than people from other backgrounds. This paper analyses the use of crowdsourcing in educational activities, especially for the academic retirees. Therefore, the objectives of this paper are to take an exploratory look on how educational organizations use crowdsourcing as part of their activities at the present time, and to suggest how the practice of crowdsourcing may expand to other educational activities in future.

465  The Efficiency Evaluation of the Community Allocation to

Healthcare Facilities in Malaysia

[email protected], [email protected]

Abstract: Malaysia is a developing country with an increase of population year by year. At the same time, the demand for public healthcare facilities also increases. Many complaints from people about inefficient services arise based on congestion and long waiting time when they’re using public health facilities in Malaysia, however, it may result from the inefficiency in resource or demand allocation to a facility. In this paper, a Capacitated Maximal Covering Location Problem (CMCLP) is used to study the current community alllocation to the healthcare facilities in Mukim Batu, Selangor. This paper also aims at evaluating the efficiency of allocating the community to the public healthcare based on a geographically defined region by applying ICER method. Importantly, we use ICER to evaluate the efficiency using the percentage assigned demand and the average travel distances as variable factors. Findings reveal that there is a need to plan for upgrading the existing facility rather than developing a new healthcare facility. The computational results also indicate that some of health facilities are inefficient based on the percentage coverage demand while most of health facilities are efficient based on the average travelled distances.

Abstract: The aim of this conceptual paper is to draw the attention of researchers, employers, and human resource policy makers to one of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, power distance, from a communications perspective. Power distance is believed to facilitate the ability of employees in balancing their work and family life. It is possible to view this factor as either a barrier or a catalyst for the accessibility and utilization of an organization’s human resource family-supportive policies to achieve desired and satisfied work and family life integration. The level of power distance may either facilitate ones’ resource gain to experience positive work-family spillover or resource depletion which leads to negative work-family spillover. Power distance is proposed to have a buffering effect on the relationship between several antecedents and work-family balance to unveil the possible reasons behind inconsistent findings in prior research. Besides this, the level of power distance is also proposed to have a predictive effect on work-family balance. The theoretical and practical importance and implications of power distance are addressed.

Abstract: Pertaining to the dumper sources of information available nowadays, the use of information are inquisitive as some of the students might not realize that they have committed plagiarism and some of them do not aware what plagiarism is about. There is no doubt that the sources of information in this age are known as one of the important factors towards the excellencies of students in completing their assignment. However, the issue arises here is does those students used it in the actual way in perfoming their task? The purposes of this study are to look for the perception of the undergraduate students in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Johor regarding the plagiarism activities and their experiences. The studies on plagiarism among university students have been recognized as an interesting area of study in the academic world and it is important. A study done by Nitterhouse (2003), quoted from McCabe and Trevino (1996), found that the number of students who committed plagiarism increased at university. They added that the plagiarism recently seems to be widespread and growth rapidly among the undergraduate students and the research found that the plagiarism activities were done by more than half of the undergraduates. Due to this problem, the objectives of this study are to find out the level of awareness among Undergraduate Students in plagiarism, to determine the Undergraduate Students knowledge on the sources of information and also to investigate the possible factors that contribute to the plagiarism activities. Taking this view into consideration, a study was conducted amongst Undergraduate Students in UiTM Johor. This study used quantitative method and 5 percent of the respondents are from three different faculties, which are Faculty of Accounting, Faculty of Business Management, and Faculty of Information Management were involved as well. This study used questionnaires as the instruments and those questionnaires were distributed to the selected class. The findings of the study reveal the genuine way of students gaining information and indicate that plagarism do exist in UiTM Johor.

Abstract: The present study aims to examine the relationship between workplace support and job satisfaction amongst academic staff in five Malaysian Public Research Universities. The population of this study is 12,994 academic staff and the sample size was 325. The sample was obtained using convenience sampling technique, in which information was gathered from elements of the population who are conveniently available at the point of data collection. The workplace support construct is made up of four elements; Perceived organizational support (POS), supervisor support, co-worker support and mentoring. The findings of Pearson correlation analysis indicate workplace support (POS, supervisor support, co-worker support and mentoring) have positive correlation on job satisfaction. Meanwhile, the result of multiple regressions shows only POS and mentoring positively effect on employee job satisfaction. Thus, the greater the extent to which employees perceived that the organization is giving them support and support from mentor to junior employee, the more they feel a moral obligation to keep working for that organization. Still, efforts should be made to improve the existing workplace support in Public Research Universities as it can lead to higher job satisfaction and higher productivity level among the academics staffs.

School of Management, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Minden Penang, Malaysia [email protected]

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to identify the impact of perceived security and privacy factors on customer trust and its influence on intention to continue using Internet banking in Malaysia. The participants for this study were individual Internet banking users in Peninsular Malaysia. Data was collected through self-administered questionnaires distributed using the drop-off and pick-up (DOPU) technique to bank branch managers who then passed the questionnaires to their customers. A total of 413 respondents completed the questionnaires. The SPSS statistical analysis software package and Partial Least Squares statistical method were used for data analysis and hypothesis testing. The results show that perceived security significantly influences customer trust and consequently intention to continue using Internet banking. Moreover, trust plays a critical role in influencing intention to continue using Internet banking in Malaysia while perceived privacy does not. An understanding of the factors identified in this study will enable Internet banking providers to effectively and efficiently enhance the security of services and thereby promote continued usage of Internet banking among customers. The findings of this study are thus expected to be of great use to Internet banking providers as improvements in Internet banking security will increase business in the long run.

Abstract: In a relatively short time YouTube- a video-sharing website headquartered in San Bruno, California, United States - has gained enormous popularity. Created by three former PayPal employees in February 2005, the site allows users to upload, view, rate, share and comment on its available contents which includes video clips, TV clips, movie trailers and other content such as video blogging, short original videos, and educational videos. ESL educators have enthusiastically welcomed this video-sharing social network as it provides not only countless hours of exposure to spoken English but also a resource to develop writing skills among the learners. This paper presents discussions and recommendations that will assist ESL educators in making their teaching sessions effective and fun.

Tools in the virtual world can be used to teach new words in the Chinese fantasy novel. The purpose is to amplify quality teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. These tools in the virtual world have the potential to be effective learning tools to assist students in expanding their commands of new words from the Chinese fantasy novels. In this study, a pilot test was conducted at UiTM (Terengganu) using a group of 34 students as samples. These students were exposed to 3 tools in the virtual worlds to learn new words in the Chinese fantasy novels. These tools in the virtual world are google docs, Basecamp, and wiggio. Students were to learn new words, discuss the meaning of the new words, make sentences using the new words learned and discuss if the sentences made were correct of not. Each of the tools in the virtual world was used for 3 weeks. After 9 weeks of access to these learning materials, students were asked to rank the usefulness of these tools in the virtual world in supporting their expansion of vocabulary. The result of the study showed that there were no significant differences in the ranking of these tools in the virtual world. The study also put on the view that without quality instructor supervision these tools in the virtual world are merely cognitive candy.

380  Language Use as Audience Design: The Dichotomy of Language Choice in Content-Based Classrooms in a Malaysian University

Kamisah Ariffin*, Norzie Diana Baharum and Rahimah Abd Wahab

Academy of Language Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA Pahang, Bandar Tun Abdul Razak Jengka, Pahang, Malaysia

Abstract: The language policy in UniversitiTeknologi MARA (UiTM) clearly stipulates that English should be used as the medium of instruction in all programmes taught (Surat PekelilingTNC[100-UiTM (TNC(A) 1/1, 7 May 2003). However, it has been observed that such language policy cannot oversimplify the complexities of the actual language use in the (at least) bilingual context of interaction in the classroom. This paper sets to present and discuss the extensive use of both BM and English in the formal classroom setting in Universiti Teknologi MARA despite the stipulated language policy. The data were represented by the discourse of content-based classroom sessions. The findings suggest language choice was highly governed by the social and psychological variables of the speakers. This paper, however, only focuses on speakers’ language choice and use as audience design in the context of interaction. Using Bell’s (1984; 2001) audience design model as a framework, the data indicate that the impact of the audience on the speakers’ speech style depends on how they ratify and accommodate the audience in terms of their norms of interaction, competence, linguistic awareness and accommodation of the audience’s needs. In addition, speakers’ style-shifting in response to topic(s) is also due to the association of topics with the audience. This study contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the sociolinguistic phenomena in real communication, by providing real examples from a situated discourse. The findings have shown that the regulation of the institutional language policy has oversimplified the complexities of the actual language use in a bilingual/multilingual context of interaction.

Abstract: Linguistic landscape (LL) is defined as the visibility and salience of languages on public and commercial signs in a given territory or region. In Malaysia, these signs are both a product of governmental planning and demographics. For example, the Malaysian subsidiaries of the Local Council by-laws (Undang-undang Kecil Majlis Perbandaran) and the National Language Act (Akta Bahasa Kebangsaan) stipulate that Bahasa Malaysia (BM) must be used for the public signboards and road names. Adopting and adapting Sunwani’s (2005) framework of uni-, bi-, and multilingual store signboards and the respective language(s) used, this study specifically examines the linguistic landscape in Putrajaya, the centre of government administration in Malaysia, to see whether the language act has been adhered to. Pictorial data of the shop signs within the commercial area of Putrajaya were collected and the analysis recorded the frequency of language use (in the shop signs) according to the types described in the framework. The data indicate that despite the clear language policy, shop signs in Putrajaya may consist of unilingual and bilingual signs in BM, English, Chinese and Tamil. The data also suggest that the language(s) used highly depends on the business products, commercial advantages that the language(s) can bring to the business and the business status that the owners want to project. Such language use creates an important indication of choice and juxtaposition of languages used in a multilingual country as well as in the business domain.

Abstract: This paper aims to describe the multiple meanings of the polysemic words “Imam dan Ummah” in the Holy Quran as translated into Malay and English languages. Based on the observation, researchers found 5 “imam” words and 47 “ummah” words mentioned in the Holy Quran. These polysemic words were chosen and analyzed in order to observe the precision of their translated meanings by comparing them with the various meanings mentioned by the Arabic scholars. The data was collected from the Tafsir Pimpinan al-Rahman which is officially used in Malaysia and The Holy Quran: English translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. The collected data was analyzed based on Arabic polysemic knowledge and Quranic commentaries. The results show that tafsir Pimpinan al-Rahman mostly resort to using separate additional explanation to ensure that the intended meaning is successfully conveyed to the readers, whilst Yusuf Ali, in most cases choose to translate the words literally. The study will benefit Malay and English readers by providing a deeper and more precise meaning of both words.

Abstract: In Malaysia, there is no specific governing law pertaining to the legal duties of the innkeepers. Therefore, the common law is adopted to uphold the rights of guests in hotels. The objective of this recent study is to examine the uniformity in the application ofthe common law duties and those under the Innkeepers Act 1952 among hoteliers in Melaka. A doctrinal research was adopted in this study and responses from 26 respondents were taken. The result showed that there is no uniformity in the application of the common law duties among hoteliers in Melaka. Moreover, the existence of lacuna in the Innkeepers Act 1952 has caused non-conformity on the part of the hoteliers in upholding the rights of the guests. Most of the hotels tend to deviate from the Innkeepers Act 1952. It is hoped that this recent study may shed a light to the policy makers, hoteliers and the public to urge for a specific law on duties of the innkeepers to uphold the rights of guests. The current doctrinal research is a qualitative study since it did not involve any statistical analysis of the data. On the other hand, the result would have probably been different or more investigative, if consideration was made to conduct a non-doctrinal research to argue the findings of the study.

Abstract: At present, there is no precise legal framework in governing waqf implementation in Malaysian universities. Under the existing Malaysian legal provisions, the State Islamic Religious Council (SIRC) is the sole trustee of waqf either waqf am or waqf khas. Thus, in creating waqf, universities must get the permission from the SIRC beforehand even though they are governed under their own higher education laws. Nevertheless, SIRC in each state does not provide a clear framework on how universities based on waqf should be governed as they are under the power of Minister of Higher Education. Consequently, the are various ways of implementing waqf in Malaysian universities as well as no standard framework on the management of these institutions. Likewise, in Turkey there are comprehensive laws regulating their waqf (foundation) universities as well as their waqf universities management. This study has incorporated qualitative and exploratory approaches. In summary, the researchers opine that the existing legal frameworks governing the implementation of waqf in Malaysian universities require some enhancement and improvement to suit the need of the institutions. In fact, the reference could be made to Turkish frameworks as they have the best model to be learnt and adopted in Malaysian context wherever appropriate.

338  Corrective and Retributive Justice Model for Trespass of Waqf Land

1 Faculty of Law, Universiti Teknologi MARA, (UiTM) Perlis [email protected]

2Faculty of Law, Universiti Teknologi MARA, (UiTM) Kedah [email protected]

Abstract: Section 425 of the National Land Code 1965 (NLC) provides the penalty of RM 10,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year to the trespasser of waqf land in this country. Though the law is clear, it is very disappointing that the remedies are not commensurate with losses incurred. Taking into account the economic situation in the country, the penalty is very unreasonable. It has not yet calculated the area of land encroached upon, the current market value of the land encroached upon, the total profit earned by the invaders, the losses incurred by the State Islamic Religious Council (as a sole trustee for waqf in this country), as well as costs incurred during the claims, litigation and enforcement cases. As such, it is essential that the remedies will be replaced with the Corrective and Retributive Justice Model as a better alternative model in solving the issue of trespass of waqf land. Considering the main aim of the study is to achieve justice and fairness for trespass of waqf land cases therefore, this study employs doctrinal research. The data collected are analyzed using the content analysis method. In brief, the researchers opine that these combined models hold key to more adequate and comprehensive remedies in providing punishment for trespass of waqf land case.

Abstract: Higher education institutions around the world are very concerned about copyright infringement as some of the institutions have faced high profile lawsuits due to copyright infringement committed by the students. Copyright infringement in higher education institutions become possible due to file sharing programs which make it easy for students to download and share copyrighted content via institutions network. In Malaysia, the government has established institutional framework as well as legal framework in order to overcome this problem. However, the government need to involve in educating the students as well as the society regarding copyright infringement. Awareness of the law might be able to prevent students from committing the offence in the future. This study aimed to identify tertiary students’ legal awareness on copyright protection for digital contents. A total of 400 survey questionnaires were distributed at various higher education institutions in Malaysia. The result suggests that taking ethics/law courses do not have an effect on legal awareness on copyright protection.

Abstract: Childcare centres (CCC) are important for the development of early childhood education in helping to shape the nation’s future leaders. Currently, there are 3729 registered CCC in Malaysia in 2014 as compared to only 522 in 2010. It shows the demand for CCC is increasing among dual career parents to enable them to enter the workforce. CCC has a legal duty to exercise reasonable care and supervision to ensure that all the children are safe in their care. The Child Care Centre Act 1984 was enacted to ensure the wellbeing and safety of the child. Nevertheless it is disheartening that there are still cases of children dying or suffering due to negligence of the CCC despite having a specific legislation. The issue of non-compliance among the CCC to the law is questionable. Hence, this paper attempts to identify the weaknesses of the existing law pertaining to the protection of children in CCC in Malaysia and compare the laws prevalent in a neighbouring country. This research applied a doctrinal approach which is qualitative study since it does not involve statistical analysis of the data. It is hoped that this paper would provide some guidelines to overcome negligence in CCC. The contribution of the study are significant to the government to assist in controlling the CCC in order to protect children from any harm as they are the most valuable resources of the nation.

Abstract: For Muslims, a nominee shall be regarded as mere executor or trustee and not an absolute beneficiary of the nominated property. Thus, the nominee is responsible to distribute the deceased property to the beneficiaries according to faraid rules. Nevertheless, the problems arise when the nominee misuses the property for his own benefits. Consequently, it leads to the violation of property rights of Muslims beneficiaries and may cause disputes and hostility among the nominee and the beneficiaries that could destroy the family institution and ummah in entirety. This research is based on qualitative content analysis methodology. It mainly aims to discuss the legal rights and duties of nominee and it seeks to identify the laws applicable in resolving the issues and problems relating to nominee. This paper provides some useful input to the public and proposes some recommendations for some related institutions and the policy makers in implementing the relevant laws and policy on matters relating to nominee in the administration Muslims property in Malaysia.

Abstract: The traditional carvings and handicrafts of Batek of Tembeling in Pahang, Malaysia used to interest visitors of Kuala Tahan National Park. However, recent natural calamities such as excessive logging, the massive flood of 2014 and el-Nino have reduced the number of tourists. The present paper discusses the decorative carvings produced by the Batek through their cultural sense and the Batek’s challenges in merchandising their products. The purpose of the study is to understand the Batek carving senses, problems and future plans for the sustainability of the traditional industry. It is suggested that these decorative arts signify a close relationship of the Batek with the environment. The decorations are also governed by the tools used, perception and the skill of the carver. Through observation-participation method, the carvings were primarily photographed and semi-structured interviews were conducted with the Batek representatives and a local tourist guide. The interview transcript was coded using the Atlas.ti software. Among the issues disclosed were Batek reluctance to keep abreast with demands, poor co-operation between the Batek and tour agents, and lastly the possible loss of heritage

Abstract: Mind mapping is a graphical depiction of a topic or idea, and their relationship in a hierarchy/level which helps to increase the teaching and learning process in a classroom. The graphical depiction through the process of imaging and manipulating complex sets enhances students: (1) memorization, (2) critical analysis and (3) conceptual understanding. Furthermore, this process is able to motivate students thus making them more active in class. This paper investigates the :( 1) usefulness and (2) effectiveness of the mind mapping concept in the: (1) CTU101 (Basic Principles of Islam) and (2) CTU151 (Islamic Thought and Civilization) course respectively. These courses are among the introduction level courses at the Universiti Teknologi MARA. The research presented in this paper was conducted using a survey (structured questionnaire). Participants were students from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perak Branch, Tapah Campus. This finding provides empirical evidence that mind mapping concepts help in the classroom teaching and learning. Finally, the findings from this research will be used in the development of the I-MAPS application program that can be accessed through means of technology as an effort to increase students’ knowledge understanding.

Abstract: In Malaysia, the common disposal method practiced is landfill. This is due to the low cost in maintenance and operation and it can dispose almost all classification and types of waste. There are several disadvantages of practicing this disposal method. It might contribute to many environmental problems such as air, water and soil pollution which might affect the ecosystem, health and social life due to improper of operation, maintenance and management. In addition, nowadays Malaysia is battled with the landfill’s area due to the increases of the waste generation. In line with this matter, this study is conducted to determine the household’s level of awareness towards recycling. Recycling might help to minimize the problems by reducing the amount of waste to be disposed at the landfill. If Malaysian concern and have awareness to practice recycling in their daily life, the issue of scarce area for landfill can be manage, thus improve the community’s quality of life. Thirty five (35) houses in Taman Sutera Prima were randomly selected and the average people per household is five (5). A set of questionnaire was distributed to attain the respondent’s level of awareness on waste recycling. The findings indicate that the recycling awareness amongst the respondent was moderate (65.7%). Moreover, the value of R2 obtained from this study show a good correlation between number of people per household and waste generation. The R2 value = 0.78458 indicates that the increment in numbers of people per household may increase the amount of waste generation. As a conclusion, even though the waste generation is increasing due the increasing in numbers of people, 77.1% of the respondent practice recycling in their daily life. Thus, local authority need to locate more recycle bins near the housing area to encourage the people who acquired the high and moderate awareness (100%) but not practice the recycling (22.9%) to practice the recycling in their daily life. Indirectly, this might help to minimize the issue on the landfill area.
