DOWNEY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB
SERVING DOWNEY AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES SINCE 1951
J. Scott Bovitz, N6MI, oper-ates ham radio contests (Field Day style) from various California counties and grid squares.
N6MI currently runs an Ele-craft K-Line (K3, P3, and KPA500) in a Ford van -- a former electronic news gath-ering (ENG)/cellular on wheels (COW). The van has a 56' 2" pneumatic mast, a 5 kilowatt generator under the hood, and eight large batter-ies.The N6MI van was pro-filed in CQ Amateur Radio magazine (February 2012). N6MI earned DXCC (#46,484) in the van, but there is no endorsement for "portable."
The photo at the top of this page was taken during the 2010 ARRL June VHF QSO Party (Mojave National Pre-serve, San Bernardino County, DM25). Links to photo-graphs of selected N6MI contest operations follow: Octo-ber 2010 California QSO Party (Inyo County, DM15); May 2011 CQ WW WPX CW Contest (Riverside County, DM23); June 2011 ARRL VHF Contest (Imperial County, Chocolate Mountains, DM23); October 2011 California QSO Party (Inyo County, DM15); October 2011 CQ WW DX SSB (Mojave Desert, San Bernardino County, DM15); November 2011 CQ WW DX CW (Lake San Antonio, Monterey County, CM95); February 2012 ARRL DX CW (Riverside County, DM23); May 2012 CQ WPX CW (Mojave Desert, San Bernardino County, DM14): June 2012 ARRL VHF Contest (with N6VI and his team, Frazier Peak, Ventura County, DM04); 93 additional 2012 VHF contest photos are here; June 2012 Field Day (Lake San Antonio, Monterey County, CM95).
Tom Sneden, K6VCR, has done some of the engineering on (and plenty of operating in) the van. See K6VCR at the operating position during the 2010 CQ WW WPX SSB Contest (San Diego County, DM12).
N6MI also operates casual CW and SSB from his four wheel drive Nissan truck, primarily during all weekend
transmitter hunts in Southern California (primarily on 146.565 MHz FM). Here is a short February 2010 t-hunt video by N6LN (N6MI and N6LN t-hunting in the snow in Riverside County).

Minutes of the D.A.R.C. General Meeting - June 7, 2012 The meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm by President Rick Norwood, KD6KHJ with 22 persons in attend-ance. The pledge of allegiance was lead by Arlene Schwartz, KE6GFI, and was followed by each individual introducing themselves to the group with their name, call sign, and home QTH. Rick Norwood, KD6KHJ, asked for a motion to accept the Treasurer's Report and the Minutes of the last meet-ing as they appeared in the June issue of the Q5. The motion was made, seconded and passed. Rick Norwood introduced Bill Heather, KB6WKT, Vice-President of Programs and Chair of 2012 Field Day Committee. Bill said that this year the club is putting the "Field back into Field Day,". After several years of operating at the Downey Fire Department's Emergency Operations Center, the club will be setting up Field Day at a vacant lot north of the First Baptist Church, The lot is owned by the church and the Club has secured per-mission to use the property during Field Day weekend, June 22-24, 2012. Bill's presentation included photographs of the Club's Field Day activities from the 1950's and 1960's and more recently at the Sussman Middle School field and the Downey Fire Department EOC. The Club expects to oper-ate as a 5A station. Station manager for the stations include, Sam Lollar, K1SL, on 40 meters phone; Ivan Mikulich, KB6ATT, on 10 and 80 meters; Dave Glenn, N6TEB, will have a digital station; Bill Heather, KB6KWT, on 20 meters phone; Kent Savage, K6WCI, on 15 meters. Dave Glenn will also be setting up the VHF stations for Field Day. They will be using the N3FJP field day contest logger program. Kristen Heather will hosting a public infor-mation table. A signup sheet for assistance for this activity was passed around. Anyone else that wishes to assist Kristen should contact her directly. Following Bill Heather's presentation, Buck Kerns, AE6DT, announced that he had sent out an email to past participants in the club's annual service event for Hawaiian Days. The dates for this year's event are July 21 and July 22, and additional operators are needed. To volunteer for this event, contact Buck at [email protected]. Buck indicated that when signing up also include your T-shirt size. If volunteering for this event Buck advises to bring a hat, earpiece, and HT, sunscreen, and chair. The club will be utilizing the simplex frequency of 145.595. Refreshments were brought by Ray Wheatley, AE6XC. After the break, Rick Norwood announced that the Club was exploring working with the Boy Scouts, in Octo-ber with the Jamboree on the Air. More information about this activity will be forthcoming. Arlene Schwartz, KE6GFI, made several announcements. The California QSO party results have now been posted on the internet and several DARC members were listed, including Norm, NQ6L, Ray, AE6XC, John, N6QQ,and Arlene, KE6GFI. In the next few weeks the June VHF contest will take place, followed by Kid's Day, June 16, and Field Day the following weekend. Kent Savage, K6WCI, reported that he and Paul Metzger, K6EH will on Thursday, June 14, take the antenna down from the repeater in Downey and install a temporary antenna, in order to retune the primary antenna. While they are on site they will reprogram the repeater IDer with the correct location. Rick Norwood, KD6KHT, reported on his visit to the Boy Scout park in Long Beach. He showed pictures of the site. Plans are underway and the DARC will work jointly on the JOTA event with the Long Beach Ama-teur Radio Club. There will be parking available for motor homes, and access to classrooms. It is hoped to have T-hunting, laser communication radio communications, and CW demonstrations. The Long Beach Boy Scout Council has a leader charged with merit badge completion and will be working with the clubs to sup-port this event. Frank Myllo, KC6YPV, gave to Dave Glenn, N6TEB a billing regarding the club's domain name. Dave Glenn will look at the billing and review it. Rick Norwood called for a motion to adjourn the meeting. Hawaiian Days Are Coming Again
Aloha! The Hawaiian Inter-Club Council of Southern California is the host organization of Ho'olaule'a being held for the
32nd time this year, on July 21st and 22nd, at Alondra Park in the city of Lawndale.
There will be continuous Polynesian entertainment, arts & crafts, games, island style foods, drawings, prizes, greeting old friends, and meeting new ones. Don't forget why we come together each year to share in that spirit we call Aloha! This event will have between 5,000 to 10,000 people in attendance for each day.
We need many volunteers for this event. This is one of the best special events that DARC participates in annually. There is free entertainment from 10:00 to 17:00 each day and HICCSC provides the radio operators with lunch and water during the course of the day.
We will have two shifts per day, one from 07:00 to 12:30 and the other 12:30 to 17:30 or so. The equipment that is required is a 2-meter HT, earpiece or headset (it can get noisy), spare battery for HT, chair, and hat (it can get hot). Volunteer and have a great time.
Please sign up at the June or July meeting with Kent Savage K6WCI or contact Buck Kerns at [email protected].

July 2012 DX By Mike Gauthier, K6ICS 6-15-2012
July Propagation Outlook Summer is here. High QRN noise levels are making it hard on DXers. The long daylight hours and noise have almost eliminated DX activity on 160 and 80 meters. 60, 40 and 30 meters are still good with the increased noise during the short night time hours. Listen on 20 through 15 meters for possible around the clock open-ings. Longer daylight hours will improve 17-10 meter DXing with 17 meters opening many mornings and eve-nings to Europe. Follow the Gray Line. Check current propagation at http://www.voacap.com/prediction.htm July DX AFGHANISTAN, T6JP. Joe is on RTTY around 18.105 MHz. QSL via 5Q2J. ALBANIA, ZA/LA6IKA. Sven, LA6IKA is operating as ZA/LA6IKA and has been active on 20 meters CW around 0400z. QSL to home call. ASIATIC RUSSIA, UE80C. Special event station UE80C is on the air until August 31 in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur. QSL via bureau. CANADA (Nunavut Province), VY0/AH6EZ & VY0/K9DXA. Operators AH6EZ and K9DXA will be on the air as VY0/home calls from Nunavut Province until July 2. Activity will be on 40 to 6 meters using all modes, with a 6 meter beacon on 50045 kHz. They will also be active as VY0RAC in the July 1 RAC Canada Day contest. QSL to home calls. CHAD, TT8PK. Phil, F4EGS is operating as TT8PK until early August. Activity is on 40 to 10 meters using CW, SSB and possibly RTTY. QSL to home call. DENMARK, OZ1HQ.
