The mission of the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis is to benefit the lives of people with Down Syndrome and their families through individual and family support, education, awareness, and advocacy.

Volunteer Service HoursIndependent Sector is the leadership forum for charities,
foundations, and corporate giving programs worldwide. It is a nonpartisan consortium of about 600 organizations. Every year, Independent Sector determines the dollar value of a volunteer hour, and this number is used by the majority of charities across the country.
For 2010, a volunteer hour of service was valued at $21.36.

Volunteers participated in multiple areas and contributed over 2,300 hours of service

Together, this was a conservative estimate of volunteer service hours = to $66,216

NEW PARENT SUPPORTMaking a Difference for our Families
• 60 families were welcomed into our DSG family since July, 2010
• 10 of these families contacted us
with a pre-natal diagnosis
• 50 New Parent packets were distributed since July, 2010
• 24 new Moms (46%) elected to receive New Parent Support Mentoring
• 50 volunteers are actively supporting new families (some continuing from last fiscal year)
• 7 of these volunteers are Dads!
• 250 mentoring hours were provided this fiscal year
• 4 individuals volunteered weekly at the Down Syndrome Center at
Children’s Hospital
• 200 hours of volunteer service were provided at the Down Syndrome Center at Children’s Hospital
• 403 New Parent families have been served since program inception in 2005

• 100+ hospital packets have been distributed this fiscal year among our 25 hospitals
• 42 medical professional packets have been distributed this fiscal year
• 87 OB/GYNs, Geneticists, Pediatric Nurses, and Counselors received informational materials through our exhibiting at a region 5 ACOG conference.
• Genetic Counseling students at Wayne State University received our Medical Professional Packets

MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR OUR FAMILIES AND THE EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY
DOWN SYNDROME EDUCATION SPECIALIST TRAINING
• 125 teachers, administrators, therapists, and counselors participated in 24 hours of training in 2010-2011
• 13 school districts in Oakland County were represented, a parochial school in Wald Lake, a charter school in Detroit have named a specialist
• 3 community agencies were trained• 125 participants have completed the certification
since the program was implemented in 2009

CONFERENCE• 128 participants attended the Saturday all-day
session on “Reaching for Opportunity- Educating Students with Down Syndrome” at U of M Dearborn
• 12 volunteers helped create and manage these sessions
• 90 volunteer hours were contributed

“LOSE THE TRAINING WHEELS”MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR THE KIDS • 40 Riders, ranging in age from 8 to 21, participated
• $150 Gift certificates were given to each rider at the end of the camp
• 28 Riders used their certificate for a bike, which included an individualized fitting to ensure proper size
• 12 Riders used their certificate for bike accessories
• 39 Volunteers participated
• 532 Hours of volunteer service were donated
• This program partnered with the Lydia Faith Cox Memorial Foundation, the Pujols Family Foundation, and Maplewood Bicycle to make this event a success

• 62 Families participated in the program in fiscal 2010/2011
• 62 Children were enrolled in 4 different classes: Toddler Time, Pre-K, Level 1 and Level 2
• 45 Total sessions were held for parents & children• 9 Teachers taught during the September – May
school year• 3 Therapists participated (1 Occupational & 2
Speech)• 12 Volunteers participated in the program• 840 Volunteer hours were donated

about a variety of topics, including community service recommendations, physician refferals, counseling referrals, services we provide, etc.
SPEAKERS BUREAU• 5 Presentations were given to area schools and
community groups• 30 Volunteer hours were donated • 5 Presentations were given by staff
