Dovecot Venue HireDovecot provides an accessible venue at the heart of Edinburgh’s historic Old Town that can accommodate a broad range of unique events from small intimate drinks receptions and meetings to larger occasions such as weddings and awards ceremonies.

When you book your event at Dovecot your Venue Hire fee contributes toward the charitable mission of the Dovecot Foundation. The Dovecot Foundation was established as a charity in 2010 by Alastair and Elizabeth Salvesen in order to ensure the long term future of tapestry weaving in Scotland and to build on the legacy and archive of 100 years of Dovecot Tapestry Studio’s history. Apprenticeship and learning are key to the future of the Studio, as is continued financial support. Dovecot encourages your guests to browse the exhibitions in Dovecot Gallery and to observe the latest tapestry and rug commissions on the Weaving Floor at the heart of this beautifully restored Victorian baths building.

A rich array of tapestry projects, collaborations and partnerships have come to fruition in this building since its refurbishment in 2008: from a highly experimental ‘performing’ rug with artist Linder for the British Art Show, to a major tapestry commission working with Chris Ofili for Clothworkers’ Livery Company in London.

Dovecot’s unique venue offers more than just space; it is an environment with a creative backdrop and intriguing history which provokes thought and inspires visitors.

The Dovecot Story

Dovecot was originally established by 4th Marquess of Bute who invited weavers John Glassbrook and Gordon Berry, from the Wimbledon workshops of William Morris, to Edinburgh in 1912 to establish a weaving studio that would produce tapestries of historic interest for Mount Stuart in Rothesay. The founding Master Weavers’ ethos of arts and crafts ideals and weaving skills have been passed on to generations of Dovecot Apprentices to the present day.

The Dovecot symbol represents the 16th century stone pigeon house located in the grounds of the Studio’s first home in Corstorphine, Edinburgh. Dovecot Tapestry Studio was incorporated in to The Edinburgh Tapestry Company in 1946, but continued to be known as Dovecot until it faced closure in 2000. Dovecot was re-established in the following year with philanthropic support from Alastair and Elizabeth Salvesen and directed by David Weir.

In 2008 Dovecot Tapestry Studio moved into a stunning new space in the centre of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Formerly a disused Victorian swimming baths, it had been languishing on the Buildings at Risk Register for many years. A combination of vision from Dovecot’s Director, David Weir, and the financial backing and passion for tapestry from the Salvesens, provided an opportunity to create a new home for Dovecot. The building allows visitors the chance to see contemporary tapestry being made and to view exhibitions that explore different aspects of the Studio’s activities.
