A new sport comes to America Sunday, Dec. 23 in Pleasanton, Calif., with the first-ever staging on American soil of a unique new running competition called the Double Road Race™ (or Double for short). A distance race consisting of two legs — an opening 10K (6.2 miles) leg, followed by a 5K (3.1 miles) leg, with a short break in between, winners to be decided on best aggregate time — the Double is the brainchild of running visionary and innovator Bob Anderson, founder and former publisher of Runner’s World magazine, and an avid runner for 50 years. “It’s not two races in one day,” says Anderson in describing his creation, “It’s one race with two legs. This is the only running event with a halftime.” After completing the 10k leg, runners can go to an area designated as the Recovery Zone, where they will be provided with hydration, massage, nutrition and advice to help them recover and prepare for the second log.

Dear Runners and Friends,

This is a special day for me, and a milestone for all of us gathered here on this historic occasion for the first Double Road Race® ever held

in America. It’s also the end of my 50-race challenge I started a year ago celebrating 50 years of running. We are making a movie titled A

Long Run documenting my adventure.

I want to welcome all of you to Pleasanton, Calif. What better place to launch this new sport, what nicer location for us to always remember

as the birthplace of the Double! I want to thank the now former Pleasanton mayor Jennifer Hosterman, Pleasanton chief of police David

Spiller, and so many others who made it possible for us to be here today.

It has not been easy to organize an event scheduled for Dec. 23, just two days before Christmas. Many of you have e-mailed us saying that

you liked this date for an event like this. We have been encouraged by that, and we agree with your sentiment. This date gives us a chance

to get together with our families before Christmas, lace up our running shoes, and be part of a Christmas family event and world-class

athletic competition.

Many people have wondered how I first came up with the idea for the Double Road Race®. It all started in the summer of 2010 when I was

out on a training run with my son, Michael. As we ran, we reflected on the sudden increase in popularity of the half marathon. Perhaps that

was due, in part, to the much shorter recovery time after a half marathon compared to the marathon itself. I love the half marathon, but I

also felt running needed something new.

To backtrack for a moment, I started Runner’s World magazine when I was still in high school back in 1966 because I loved running—with

a passion! I published the magazine for 18 years, during which time the circulation climbed to 450,000, before selling it to Rodale Press in

1984. Being something of an innovator and idea man at heart, when I was publishing Runner’s World I started the weekly Fun Run program

(that grew to nearly 400 locations around the world), the Corporate Cup Relays, National Running Week and the 24-Hour Relay.

When I sold the magazine, a stipulation of the agreement was that I had to stay out of the “business” of running for five years. Subsequently

I started a swimwear company called Ujena, and besides being the CEO I became chief photographer as well. As is typically the case

with any startup company, I was working 60-80 hours per week. It had been tough running as much as I wanted to when I was publishing

Runner’s World, and now it was just as tough and challenging while manufacturing and selling swimwear.

The years passed, Ujena became an established company, and more time opened up for running—and ideas. Back to that run with Michael

in 2010, our conversation ultimately turned to the triathlon, which is a competition I would have liked to try but never have because—keep

this a secret!—I can’t swim. I was telling Michael I thought running needed something special, something new. Like a triathlon, but different.

A new event where both world-class runners and entire families could join together, challenge themselves and have fun!

Then an idea suddenly occurred on me! I said to Michael, “Let’s do two long races in one day—almost back to back, with a short rest in

between. Let’s keep records. Let’s set up some guidelines. Let’s bring in some new ideas. Let’s start a new sport.” And that’s how the

Double Road Race® was created. The name actually came later, the Double Road Race Federation was founded, we staged some trial

Doubles in Mexico to experience and study the unique aspects of this challenge, and this brings us here today for the grand unveiling of this

new competition, this new sport, to not only see history in the making but to be a part of it.

Our hope was to have at least 1000 runners in this first-ever Double on American soil. This had indeed happened, and we think it’s just the

beginning. Thank you for joining us.

A New Sportis BornThe Double has been described as a road runningchess match in shoes, shorts, and a singlet.

History will be made Dec. 23, 2012 in Pleasanton, Calif.,

with the first-ever staging on American soil of an unique new running competition called the Double (short for Double Road Race®).

A distance race consisting of two legs—an opening 10-kilometer leg, followed by a five-kilometer leg, with a break in between—

the Double is the brainchild of running visionary and innovator Bob Anderson, founder of Runner’s World magazine, which he published for 18 years, and an avid runner for 50 years.

“It’s not two races in one day,” says Anderson in describing his creation, “It’s one race with two legs. This is the only running event with a halftime.” The 5k

leg starts 100 minutes, give or take 10 minutes, after the start of the 10k. This means that runners who cover the 10K fastest will get more rest before the 5K leg starts. Those who cover it slower will get less rest.

Runners will receive official times for both legs and these can be recorded as two races, which is exactly what Bob Anderson is

doing in his 50-Race Challenge (see page 13).

Bob Anderson created the Double to give runners a new challenge, and it seems runners are responding enthusiastically. At least 1000 runners are expected to participate in the Pleasanton Double, and the entry list may even reach the cutoff number, which is 1200.

After completing the 10K leg, runners in the Double may go to an area designated as the Recovery Zone, where they are provided with hydration, nutrition and physical support, e.g., massage, to help them recover and prepare for the second leg.

The Double provides runners an almost endless number of strategy variations. For that reason, the Double has been described as a road running chess match in shoes, shorts and a singlet.

THE LURE AND ROMANCE OF THE DOUBLE By David Prokop

T hose distances are magic! The Ten Thousand … the Five Thousand … the very sound sings of Olympian efforts by the world’s finest distance

runners over the decades in the two longest track races in the Olympic Games.

Now a new era dawns! It took more than a century since the birth of the Modern Olympics in 1896 before Bob Anderson, an American distance running visionary, grafted those two distances together in a new running event, indeed a new sport, with its own rules, regulations and tactical variations, called the Double Road Race®. A new sport in which participants would run those two distances on a road course, thus emulating what we’d all seen those heroic Olympians do over the decades in the Olympics themselves—only the participants in the Double would run those distances back to back with only a one-hour break in between!

Thus a new endurance Olympus and challenge rose up for runners to behold and attempt. If the marathon is a quantitative endurance test of sheer volume and distance, the Double is a qualitative endurance test of speed and resiliency. As marathoner Tyler McCandless has described it, “It takes guts to go out and hammer a 5K after being tired from a 10K!”

And now they come, running pilgrims all—the fast and the not so fast, men and women, the young and the old, those with thousands of miles on their legs and those relatively new to distance running—to answer the question for themselves, “Can I do this?”, in the words of Bill Rodgers, probably the greatest road racer this country ever produced. And thus they come, the first of many others still to come, all in response to the lure and romance of the Double.

Still running and racing, marathon great Bill Rodgers will compete in the Pleasanton Double Dec. 23 on his 65th birthday.

A headline participant in the Pleasanton Double will be the legendary Bill Rodgers, former American recordholder in the marathon, four-time winner of the New York City Marathon and four-time winner of the Boston Marathon. Now 64 (he will celebrate his 65th birthday on the day of the Pleasanton Double), this all-time great of American distance running offered this comment about competing in the Double, “I’m kind of nervous about it,” a reference to the unique format of the competition. Coming from a famous runner who’s seen and done it all, this speaks volumes about the singular challenge the Double presents. Bill Rodgers will receive the Bob Anderson Lifetime Achievement Award at the awards ceremony following the Double. More at: www.ujenafitclub.com

The Yellow Jersey

Unlike other distance running events, the Double has a

required rest period built in as part of the event. What is done during this 15-75 minute rest—depending on how fast the 10k leg was run—will have a great deal to do with how well the 5k is run. For that reason, we have developed the Recovery Zone.

The Recovery Zone is a unique and vital part of The Double Road Race®

The Recovery Zone will provide runners a variety of services by trained professionals, including hydration, nutrition, physical support (such as massage) and advice, to help them recover and prepare for the second leg. The Recovery Zone usually will be set up indoors as a contingency against inclement weather.

It’s been described as one of the most famous pieces of sports

clothing in the world. The yellow jersey finally makes the leap from cycling to running Dec. 23 at the Pleasanton Double Road Race® when the men’s and women’s winners of the opening 10K leg will wear a yellow jersey in the concluding 5K leg.

Understand that in the Tour de France, the yellow jersey is not only an honor for the cyclist

wearing it, it identifies for the competitors, the media and the spectators alike who is in the lead based on cumulative time. It is a focal point of what the competition is about—who’s the leader on elapsed time? The yellow jersey will serve that same purpose in the Double. If there were no yellow jersey, there’d be no visual way to readily know who was the overall race leader. More at: www.ujenafitclub.com

Featuring running pioneers, international masters greats, and some of today’s top young runners

Christine KennedyIn 1989 she ran the Berlin Marathon in 2:35:05, missing the A Standard (2:35:00) to qualify for the Irish Olympic team by a mere five seconds. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because while none of her contemporaries who made that team are still racing, the 5’1”, 98-lb. marvel, who now lives in the Bay Area, is not only going strong at age 57 but is truly one of the most amazing runners in the world. On October 7 at the Chicago Marathon she ran 2:56:04, becoming the first woman 57 or older to run under 3 hours for the marathon—and she did it while suffering cramps the last 16 miles of the race!

Verity Breen (Shown left)An unbelievably prolific endurance athlete, this transplanted Australian who moved to San Francisco in 2009 after marrying an American has participated with great success in an almost staggering number of events: More than 120 triathlons, nearly 100 marathons (winning 20 and running under 3 hours in 40). Plus she made the Australian team in four different endurance disciplines—triathlon, mountain running, 50K road race and ultra trail running. The former Verity Tolhurst, and now 46 years of age, she reacted almost instinctively when she first heard of the Double, “This is for me!”

Daniel TapiaComing off a huge win in the California International Marathon in Sacramento Sunday, Dec. 2, in which he prevailed on a windy, rainy day over several outstanding Africans and two Americans who had run 2:11-2:12, this 26-year-old from Prunedale, Calif. in the Salinas area has emerged as a new star in the marathon. The first American since 1999 to win the

Sacramento race, he took his final exam four days later at the Monterrey School of Law. His winning time in Sacramento, under very difficult conditions, was 2:16:29, just over a minute slower than his personal best of 2:15:26.

Tyler McCandlessWinner of the Kauai Marathon the last two years, this native Pennsylvanian now living in Boulder, Colo., where he’s working towards a Ph.D. in meteorology, has a marathon best of 2:17.09 and he’s run the half marathon in 1:04:59. Tough competitor, great recuperative power, he seems made to order for a competition like the Double. His boyhood hero was his father, Ralph—a college wrestler! Recently started working with a new coach, Steve Jones, former marathon world recordholder from Wales who’s now coaching runners in Boulder.

Welcome to the PleasantonDouble Road Race®

Regarding the number of participants expected in the Pleasanton Double, Justin Wall, a member of the Double Road Race Federation Board of Directors, said recently, “We wanted to ultimately build this into the biggest running event in Northern California during the Christmas holiday, but since we had almost 900 entrants by Dec. 10, it appears this has already happened. Thanksgiving Day has the Applied Material Silicon Valley Turkey Trot race in downtown San Jose. But there was no BIG running event in Northern California at Christmas time—until now!”

Asked why Pleasanton was selected as the site of the inaugural Double in America, Bob Anderson said, “Pleasanton is a community that is very partial to sporting events, and it was very supportive of us holding the event there. Besides, the roads are wide, smooth and flat, and we wanted a fast course. The courses for both the 10K and 5K are fast and flat.”

Regarding the philosophical and promotional vision behind the Double Road Race®, Justin Wall of the D.R.R.F. says, “I think it’s important that people know Bob’s vision goes way beyond building one race or a series of races that are unique and different. He wants to build a new sport for runners, and the Double Road Race Federation will be the umbrella organization for these races. Runners do not get nearly enough attention, and Bob wants to recognize all runners, all ages, in many new and unique ways. As this grows, he looks forward to working with the best and most visionary race directors all over the country and internationally, as well as encouraging new organizers who share his vision to license and put on official Double Road Races.

“Our underlying cause with the Double, in addition to encouraging more participation and provide runners with a new

The Double Road Race Federation (D.R.R.F.) has been

established as the governing body for this new sport. Clearly the Double Road Race® has a lot of potential—in every sense of the word. Consequently it seems both logical and appropriate that the Double must become part of the fitness and running scene all over the country, so runners everywhere can experience the fun, the benefits and the challenge. Organizations and race directors who would like to promote a Double in their area should contact the D.R.R.F. for licensing information.

The D.R.R.F. has established the official guidelines, rules and regulations, and will maintain the official performance records. It also will offer bonus dollars to runners who set world, age-group and other records at sanctioned events.

All Double Road Races must be sanctioned by the D.R.R.F. to qualify for Championship Series or Classic Series benefits and recognition. The basic difference between the two is that Doubles in the Classic Series are smaller events that don’t have a formal

A Race of Endless Strategy Options

There are almost an endless number of strategy variations—

not unlike a chess match—you can use in doing the Double Road Race®.

By its very nature, the Double is strategy oriented. Almost inordinately so.

At first glance it may seem like a diabolical challenge – “Wait a minute! You mean, I have to race a 10K, take a short break, and then race a 5K? That’s a real killer!”

Undeniably, there is a gut check element to the Double. An opportunity to dig deep, very deep if you wish, greater than in a regular road race where there’s a single starting line and finish line. But, in essence, the Double is a competition of pacing, of

Shakespeare might have said it: “How do I run thee? Let me count the ways.”

strategy, of tactics, of planning. Oh, you have to be a talented, fit and gutsy distance runner to really excel in such a competition, but the strategy variables and demands of the Double are such that at its zenith it is a thinking man’s and woman’s competition—as we said before, a kind of runner’s chess match on the roads in shoes, shorts and a singlet.

So let’s look at just two of the strategies and approaches you can use in the Double—48 more strategies are available on our Website, so the options are almost endless, as are the strategies and moves in chess.

THE MATHEMATICAL STRATEGY – Realize you’re going to be running a total of 15 kilometers, with a rest break

two-thirds of the way through. Estimate or calculate how fast you could hope to run 15 kilometers, which is a bit shorter than 10 miles, then adopt an appropriately faster pace factoring in the rest

break. Fine tune your pacing as you get more experienced at competing in the Double.

THE GRAND EXPERIMENT STRATEGY – See the Double as one competition in a series of Doubles you plan to run. Experiment in each successive Double how hard a pace you can handle in the 10K and the 5K with a rest in between. Then you’ll be seeking to go faster from one Double to the next as you get the feel and pacing of the competition more ingrained in your mind, as your training becomes more specific and effective for the challenge involved, and as you learn to improve your recoverability during the rest break

The 50 Race ChallengeEnds Today

The Pleasanton Double will also serve as the conclusion of

the movie, A Long Run, which documents Bob Anderson’s year-long campaign, in celebration of his 50 years of running, to complete 50 races in one year, covering a total of 350 miles, at an average speed of seven minutes per mile. No modest feat for a man aged 64! The 10K and 5K legs of the Double will count as his 49th and 50th races of the year. And the question, of course, is: Will the man who founded Runner’s World at age 17 because of his love of running ultimately achieve his goal of averaging under seven minutes a mile when

his 50-race series comes to an end at Pleasanton?

The film is scheduled for release in 2013. Director Michael Anderson says, “We will be filming in Pleasanton—and the Double and many of its participants will be part of our film.” Co-producer Catherine Cross adds, speaking to all those who may be thinking of participating in the Double, “This will be your chance to be part of this movie.”

Additional information, including screening dates and locations when finalized, is available online at: www.alongrun.com

Terry McCluskey Just about the best 60-65 age group runner in the country, this 5’7 ½”, 128-lb. retired medical technologist from Vienna, Ohio (near Youngstown) was voted Master of the Year in 2011 by the Road Runner’s Club of America and Master of the Year (60-64 age category) by the U.S. Track and Field Association. Why? For such achievements as winning his

age group in the 2011 Boston Marathon in 2:48:38, the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler in Washington, D.C. with a 1:00:12 performance, and the marathon at the 2011 World Masters Championships in Sacramento in 2:52:43. Race in, race out, nobody does it better in this age group than this man.

Michelle MeyerAs an undergraduate at Stanford, she didn’t even go out for the track team because she was strictly a recreational runner at the time. Recreation has definitely given way to competition, and in only 2 ½ years of competitive running the second-year medical student at California University, San Francisco has compiled an impressive list of running achievements, including victories in two marathons (Oakland in 2010, Modesto in 2011) and seven half marathons, plus setting personal bests of 2:43:57 in the marathon, which qualified her for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, and 1:17:38 in the half marathon. That list could become significantly more impressive depending on what this 25-year-old from Carmel does in the Pleasanton Double today.

Jose Pina Sr. and Jr.A remarkable father and son running duo from San Jose, Calif., the eldest Pina is one of the top 40-45 age group runners in the nation, with a personal best of 1:13:58 in the half marathon and 31:38 in the 10K, while Jose Jr. has run 34:57 in the 10K and 15:36 in the 5k. Who is the fastest? Jose Jr. says, “It depends on what we’re running—5K and down, I’m faster than him, 10K and up, he’s faster than me.” Quite a statement considering this young man is only…15 years old!

Fernando CabadaThere’s good and then there’s very good. This tall, slender native of Fresno, Calif., who has lived in Boulder, Colo., for the last six years, definitely belongs in the latter category. A 2:11:53 marathoner and the American recordholder for 25K on the road (1:14:21), he’s running the Pleasanton Double as a high-quality training session for the Houston Marathon two weeks later where he hopes to break 2:10. The “workout” he plans to do in Pleasanton: Run 30 minutes for the 10K (that’s 4:48-4:50 mile pace), then pick up the tempo and run 14:30 for the 5K (4:40 pace).
