last month was another significant milestone for the group as we unveiled our new brand

architecture to an international audience at ItB asia 2012 held from october 17-19 in singapore.

Before I share with you the success and excitement of the event itself, allow me to delve into the rationale behind the rebranding of Kosmopolito Hotels International to Dorsett Hospitality International.

almost a year ago, we decided to embark on a whole new brand architecture which would enable us to strengthen our position in the hospitality industry and leverage on the already established Dorsett brand name. Finally on 21 september this year, we successfully changed our group’s name to Dorsett Hospitality International.

With our group name change, we consolidated the hotel portfolio and divided it into three brands that cover different market segments:

d.collection - a series of upscale, charismatic hotels in prime locations carefully chosen for their proximity to the pulse of each city.

Dorsett Hotels & resorts - comprising the upscale Dorsett grand hotels offering tasteful and rich hospitality experience, and midscale Dorsett hotels that features contemporary urban hotels in central locations.

silka Hotels - famed for convenience, speedy service and attractive room rates.

Whilst each brand caters to different market segments, all hotels promise to deliver on the Dorsett Hospitality International’s commitment to be ‘the gateway to asian Inspired Hospitality’ by providing guests with a memorable and unique experience that embraces the asian grace and warmth.

It was indeed heartening to witness industry players at ItB asia giving us the thumbs up with our new brands. From our unique and striking booth to the well-attended media conference, it was truly a success for all of us to be proud of.

Most importantly was the team spirit that

prevailed throughout the entire event with everyone having demonstrated and upheld the ‘one team, one Dream’ philosophy. as shown through the photo gallery in this issue of Dorsett Pulse, there were countless memories and many wonderful moments for us to cheer about.

However, for me it was our people which I was most proud of as they demonstrated our core values throughout the planning and running of the event. From the ‘innovation’ that went into the booth design, the ‘inspiration’ behind everyone’s efforts, to the ‘integrity’ shown by all in depicting our brand values and service standards, and ‘initiative’ of all our participating hotels’ general Managers and sales and Marketing Directors cross-selling each other’s properties.

truly, I am enormously proud of the team, and urge everyone to keep up with your tremendous contributions! – Winnie Chiu, President and Executive Director of Dorsett Hospitality International.

Kane ng is a true model associate at the cosmopolitan Hotel, Hong Kong.

unprecedented for the hotel, Kane was promoted four times within a course of five years throughout his time with the hotel.

In carrying out his role as guest services supervisor, he is recognised amongst his colleagues for his outstanding performance and exceptional customer service. commenting on his exceptional rise to his current position, Kane expressed the utmost gratitude to the management, his immediate supervisors and all colleagues alike for their support.

“I started off as a bell boy and it was like only yesterday when I was in that role assisting guests with their bags and providing them tips in touring the city,” he said sheepishly.

Kane added: “today I still do these tasks

because I love helping guests. However, I am glad to be given this new position as I’m able to acquire new knowledge, from overseeing the guest services team, to ensuring the smooth running of the Front Office and interacting with guests. It is not easy, but there is nothing as challenging and satisfying as my current job.”

Kane’s zealousness in work and his “can-do” attitude are also widely-recognised by all of his colleagues, highlighted by winning cosmopolitan Hotel, Hong Kong’s “outstanding employee” for the month of May and June this year. this was the second time Kane was bestowed the “outstanding employee” following his success back in 2010.

Persistence, proactive, passionate and an excellent team player, coupled with four promotions and two awards… Kane’s a legend in the making!

Be it organising corporate functions, planning charity events,

coordinating management meetings or scheduling appointments with the hotel’s general manager, it is quite common for Haryati Mohd Karim’s name to crop up.

since commencing work with silka Johor Bahru on april 2010, Haryati has been involved in various facets of the hotel’s business and daily operations. When the Pasir gudang lass started off as a Personal assistant to the general Manager two years ago, it was an entirely new experience for her.

“the main reason how I ended up coming for an interview in a totally different industry was because my previous employer was struggling to sustain its business,” Haryati explained.

armed with a Diploma in secretarial science from universiti teknologi Mara and plenty of enthusiasm to expand on her knowledge, she convinced the hotel’s management team of her commitment and desire to excel, despite the lack of working experience within the hospitality sector.

two years on, Haryati is very much in the thick of the action at silka Johor Bahru. she is often relied on to assist in organising both corporate and staff events held at the hotel. acknowledged for her meticulous planning and coordination skills, the jovial lady is constantly at the heart of the team’s activities.

the 35-year old, who was previously working as an operation Manager said the biggest challenge for her was to learn about the hotel industry. “It was indeed a completely new experience from what I was doing before but because of the strong teamwork we have here, that made it easy for me to adapt quickly.”

there were even times when she had to lend a helping hand to the team to clean and prepare the rooms during the hotel’s high occupancy period. Yet it is not all work at the office for her.

over the years, she has participated – and won - netball competitions during the MaH games (Johor chapter), helped organised Mother’s Day and Father’s Day events, as well as staged durian parties for the hotel. another prominent feature of silka Johor Bahru is its active organisation in corporate social responsibility programmes each year since 2010, which Haryati is

giving the personal touch

often at the centre of it all.“I’ve always look forward to the chance to play

a part to make life better for the less fortunate and underprivileged community around us. thus, I am very

grateful for this opportunity to be involved in the hotel’s csr events,” she said.

In her free time, the affable personal assistant will gather her close friends and family members to visit old folk’s homes and orphanages and to spend time with them. often, they would bring along food and essential items to be donated to the elderly folks and children.

the proud mother of two sons recalls a poignant moment during last year’s Hari raya event held for residents of an old folk’s home in Johor. she remembered: “I was really emotional during the event as it reminded me of my late parents. I just hope we can all spend more time with our family members when they are still around.”

only recently given the additional responsibility of assisting in the hotel’s marketing communication and public relations functions, Haryati has taken to the role like a duck to water.

“While I am obviously nervous about undertaking this new role, I realised that this is a good opportunity for me to improve on my communication and writing skills. It’s clearly an honour for me to play a part in elevating the brand awareness for the hotel in the market,” she said.

With Haryati’s energetic and positive personality, silka Johor Bahru can indeed look forward to an increased presence in Johor and a personal touch for its customers.

Hobbies: Baking, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends. Motto @ work: To work with passion, sincerity and to foster teamwork amongst colleagues.
