DOROTHY LYNAS NEWS CODE OF THE DRAGON *Respect *Responsibility *Safety Friday, November 4, 2016 Dear Dorothy Lynas Families: October was an eventful month here at Dorothy Lynas with Walk to School Week, Thanksgiving activities, Great Shakeout Drill, PAC Welcome Back Event, Hallowe’en parade, and many Hallowe’en classroom activities including a spooky Lights Out Lunch on the 31 st to encourage energy saving. Will Stroet and his Backyard Band provided us with a lively concert of songs in both English and French. We are grateful to the PAC for their generous support of this performance. The PAC Welcome Back Event was very much appreciated by our new Dorothy Lynas families who have come from far and wide – Korea, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Vancouver, and other North Vancouver schools. In addition, we held our first assembly of the year to welcome both returning and new staff and students. Our Grade 7 Leadership Team presented their video of What Makes Dorothy Lynas a Great School (aka “Dorothy Lynas is Awesome”). This was a wonderful opportunity for new staff and students to become acquainted with what we truly value here. We followed with the unveiling of our finished spindle whorl. Splash (Aaron Nelson Moody) gave a brief account of the place of the spindle whorl in the Coast Salish culture both as a tool and as a piece of art. We viewed last year’s video of the preliminary stages with the children’s art completed and then watched a slide show of close-ups of the finished piece. The spindle whorl has now been signed on the back by all of our students and staff members. Soon, it will be hung in the front hall by the gym doors and will be the first thing that visitors see when they enter – a beautiful symbol of our commitment to learning and sharing on the lands of the Coast Salish people. As we enter the month of November, the days are getting shorter, darker and wetter creating potentially dangerous traffic situations. We have noticed an increase in unsafe practices such as double parking, letting children cross from double parked cars, and staying in a double parked position once children have left the vehicle in order to text. Please see the traffic page included later in this newsletter which de-mystifies the signage along Inlet Crescent, and take care to follow the rules of the road to keep our students safe. Our Remembrance Day Assembly will take place on Wednesday, November 9 th at 1:20pm. We would love to have parents join us as we recognize the significant contributions that have been made to ensure that Canada is a safe, welcoming, peaceful place to live. And to each and every family, the Dorothy Lynas staff sends wishes for a peaceful, thoughtful day of Remembrance on November 11 th – may the vision of world peace guide us all. Sincerely, Arlie Thompson Megan Wheatley Principal Vice Principal

Dear Dorothy Lynas Families:

October was an eventful month here at Dorothy Lynas with Walk to School Week, Thanksgiving

activities, Great Shakeout Drill, PAC Welcome Back Event, Hallowe’en parade, and many Hallowe’en

classroom activities including a spooky Lights Out Lunch on the 31st to encourage energy saving.

Will Stroet and his Backyard Band provided us with a lively concert of songs in both English and

French. We are grateful to the PAC for their generous support of this performance.

The PAC Welcome Back Event was very much appreciated by our new Dorothy Lynas families who

have come from far and wide – Korea, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Vancouver, and

other North Vancouver schools. In addition, we held our first assembly of the year to welcome

both returning and new staff and students. Our Grade 7 Leadership Team presented their video of

What Makes Dorothy Lynas a Great School (aka “Dorothy Lynas is Awesome”). This was a wonderful

opportunity for new staff and students to become acquainted with what we truly value here. We

followed with the unveiling of our finished spindle whorl. Splash (Aaron Nelson Moody) gave a brief

account of the place of the spindle whorl in the Coast Salish culture both as a tool and as a piece

of art. We viewed last year’s video of the preliminary stages with the children’s art completed and

then watched a slide show of close-ups of the finished piece. The spindle whorl has now been

signed on the back by all of our students and staff members. Soon, it will be hung in the front hall

by the gym doors and will be the first thing that visitors see when they enter – a beautiful symbol

of our commitment to learning and sharing on the lands of the Coast Salish people.

As we enter the month of November, the days are getting shorter, darker and wetter creating

potentially dangerous traffic situations. We have noticed an increase in unsafe practices such as

double parking, letting children cross from double parked cars, and staying in a double parked

position once children have left the vehicle in order to text. Please see the traffic page included

later in this newsletter which de-mystifies the signage along Inlet Crescent, and take care to

follow the rules of the road to keep our students safe.

Our Remembrance Day Assembly will take place on Wednesday, November 9th at 1:20pm.

We would love to have parents join us as we recognize the significant contributions that

have been made to ensure that Canada is a safe, welcoming, peaceful place to live.

And to each and every family, the Dorothy Lynas staff sends wishes for a peaceful, thoughtful day

of Remembrance on November 11th – may the vision of world peace guide us all.

Sincerely,

Arlie Thompson Megan Wheatley

ALLERGY-FRIENDLY FOOD DRIVE CHALLENGE

Our school under the sponsorship of the

PAC will be conducting a holiday food

drive from November 21-December 2,

2016. All products collected during this

drive will be donated to a local food

bank.

Food Allergy Canada and Canadian race

car driver, Alex Tagliani, are promoting

food allergy awareness and safety this

holiday season with the launch of the

Allergy Friendly Food Drive Challenge

for schools. This initiative calls on

schools to help collect allergy-friendly

food items to support local food

banks/charitable organizations in our

school communities across the country.

By participating in this challenge, our

school will also be entered for a chance

to win a grand prize of Fifteen Apple

iPad Air 2- 16GB and a meet-and-greet

with Alex Tagliani at our school! While

the prize is a nice incentive, our primary

motive for joining is the opportunity not

only to increase awareness of allergy

issues but also to provide food for people

in need in our community.

Here’s how it will work: We will be

designating each day of the challenge to

one of the top priority food allergens and

will ask students to bring in a product

that does NOT contain that allergen.

Further details will be communicated

through the PAC website and class reps.

WEATHER ALERT As we get further into the cooler, wetter weather, parents are reminded to ensure their children are suitably dressed for the weather. It is always best to assume that children will be playing outside during recess and lunch, and appropriate clothing for the weather is a must! Please remember how quickly our weather can change from sun to heavy rain, and plan for your child’s comfort. It is also important that students have a pair of inside shoes at school. Wet muddy boots and shoes create unsafe and messy conditions on our floors and carpets.

Parent Library - Books on Anxiety

If you attended the PAC-sponsored presentation by Dr. Lynn Miller on anxiety (or even if you didn't!), you may be interested in these books. They are in our Parent Library now on display in the front hall by the office and can be borrowed by signing them out at the front office.

Disaster Response Routes

Have you noticed these yellow signs on all the major roads? In the event of an emergency, only First Responders (Fire, Ambulance, and Police) will be able to use these roads. They (Responders) need to get where they are required, quickly. It is important that you do not use these roads, until you are told, via your battery operated or car radio. Do you have a kit in your car? It will probably be several hours until roads are re-opened, if undamaged & passable. To learn more about Emergency Preparedness, enroll your neighbours/community, into a Personal Emergency Preparedness Workshop. No charge to North Shore Residents. To arrange, call North Shore Emergency Management Office @ 604-983-7440 or check out our website @ www.nsemo.org

Greetings from the Dorothy Lynas Library We would like to welcome you to another year of reading adventures and discoveries in the Dorothy Lynas library. We are Teacher-Librarians, both having many years of experience teaching in the classroom here at this school as well as others in North Vancouver and elsewhere. I am a former Kindergarten, Grade 1 and 2 French Immersion, and high school teacher. Ms. Reader has taught Core French and Grades 2-7 here and currently teaches high school Core French at another local school. Ms. Reader works Mondays and I am here Tuesdays to Fridays.

As Teacher-Librarians, we have many interesting duties. We see all grades at least once a week to share interesting stories, knowledge about the kinds of books that we have, do "book talks" to help students discover new authors and books, and search out books for projects. An Open Book Exchange on Mondays and Wednesdays welcomes Gr. 4-7 students. We also play a role in assisting the staff in accessing teacher resources and books. When we are not teaching, we are the "keepers of the books". This involves keeping track of overdue books and relaying this information to both students and parents, buying new English and French books, processing and cataloguing books, and keeping the collection current and organized. We are excited to be working with a new library circulation system, Follett Destiny.

With the new system, there are a few changes to library policies. Books can be borrowed for 2 weeks (14 days) and renewed once. It has been our practice to see the books in order to renew them so that the renewal is not part of a bigger problem. Books do have a sneaky side, and they sometimes choose interesting places to hide such as a backpack, in the car, under the bed, on the bookshelf at home, somewhere in or around the sofa, and in a desk at school. As well, there are technical and human errors on occasion when checking books in and out, and the books may be already shelved in the library. Many hands, like those of teachers, parent volunteers, and students, help out in the library, and for that we are very grateful, even though any of us can create a circulation problem. If you receive an overdue notice or your child has a concern about a library book, please call us at 604-903-3430, drop by the library or contact us by email at [email protected] or [email protected].

If a book is damaged or lost, we will send a notice home asking for the money to replace the item. In a year, we lose more books to water and juice damage than anything else. Once a book has had a bath, the pages may crinkle up, swell, and stick together making it unusable.

We have a beautiful library full of marvelous books thanks to the funds we receive from the school district, the DL Parent Advisory Council, and the Scholastic Book Fair. The book fair will happen later this year and notices will be sent closer to the date. We also take donations of books and appreciate any that are in good condition and of interest to today's children.

Another part of our teaching position is to talk to parents and families about what works best for each student. It is both exciting and challenging to guide children through developing the skills to choose books that are appropriate for their age and maturity, reading level and interests. As well, this communication continues to develop a home and school connection that is vitally important to emotional, social and academic success.

Yours truly,

Madame Kathleen Patterson & Ms. Joan Reader

NEW TRAFFIC SIGNAGE We are grateful to the District of North Vancouver for responding so quickly and effectively to our concerns about traffic in the immediate vicinity of the school. Please take the time to review the new signage and adjust your driving habits accordingly. Parents continue to park in the no stopping and drop off zones creating safety hazards and interfering with the effectiveness of the drop-off/pick-up process.

Parking Sign 8am – 4pm School Days This sign’s arrow points to the Drop Off Pickup Zone clearly indicating that it is not a parking zone. Please do not park in the Drop Off Pickup Zone.

No Stopping Signs These signs and their arrows delineate the space on either side of the school parking lot driveway. Please do not stop in the space on either side of the school parking lot driveway. It seriously impedes vision and the safety of students as they cross on the sidewalk.

Drop Off Pickup Zone Please drive up, pull in, drop your child off/pick your child up and drive off immediately. If your child is not yet there, do not pull in; drive on and around the loop once more.

No Stopping These signs with the yellow bollards are doing the job. Thank you for respecting them and thus eliminating the double-parking safety nightmare.
