Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what promises to be quite a season in

the history of Dorking FC, both and off the field.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of Epsom Athletic.

There can be no disguising the fact that it was a disappointing November in terms of results. But at the same time, Danny Fox and his coaching staff learned more about the squad and where we will need to strengthen to provide a platform for some of the excellent young local players who have broken in to the first team this season and that we hope will develop with us as we rebuild Dorking FC on and off the field, representing their home town club for many seasons to come.

We have always spoken about this being a transitional season, sowing the seeds for a locally based squad that will really mean something to the community when we return home to Meadowbank next season. That means being relatively unconcerned by individual results as long as we’re seeing progress towards the right squad profile and style of football, with a genuine commitment to youth development.

When going through a sticky patch, it’s sometimes easy to forget just how much progress has been made in a few short months. Since the summer, the first team has established a disciplined approach to training, shows good discipline on the pitch, aspires to a much-improved playing style and has started to provide a genuine pathway with young local talent coming through and establishing themselves in the squad.

Now, after considering performances in recent games and what we now need to continue moving forward, Danny has begun adjusting the squad. There have been some new arrivals that will help the core of players who we see as the long-term future of the Chicks, and you can read about these changes in the manager’s notes later in the programme.

DORKING FC - BACK IN TOWN

a welcome from the chairman

ALAN GOUT

Meanwhile, as anyone who was at last month’s Race Night here will know, the spirit in the squad remains excellent - we’re fortunate to have some wonderful people here on our journey returning the club back to the heart of the town, and credit must go to Danny and his staff of Chris Wye, Greg Fidele and Matt Dilger for getting us this far and creating great squad morale even when things are difficult on the pitch.

But this club isn’t just about the first team. NIck Torpey, Steve Lunn, Simon Coffey and the Under 18s are making a major contribution both in putting the club back on the map in the community and in local football, as well as providing players to support the first team as required. And Matt Dilger’s Ladies team continues to play with fantastic exuberance and fly-the-flag for the club in the town and on social media.

On a match day, it’s also important to acknowledge the great contribution made by our Dorking FC matchmakers - the team of volunteers from the community who have helped make sure that everything runs smoothly at our home games here at Westhumble. In the car parks, on the gate, providing match day food for the teams, helping to run the ground and serving in the clubhouse, the Matchmakers give spectators and players a warm welcome - and they are everything this club is about. If you’d like to be a part of it, then please just talk to the volunteers behind the bar, or email Jane Mahony, our Head of Volunteer Recruitment, via [email protected].

The exciting move back to our new stadium at our ancestral home of Meadowbank gets ever closer. You can see some pictures of the early stages on the building work later in this programme and, in the new year, we’ll start to see the buildings going up. When it’s completed in the summer, the clubhouse will offer a fantastic new

seven day a week facility for Dorking FC. With Dorking Wanderers first team playing their home matches there, Surrey FA relocating their headquarters to the new ground and local youth clubs training weekly, Dorking FC and our rebuilt ground will be at the centre of Surrey football – a lasting legacy for sport that will regenerate that area and bring people into the town centre. There’s plenty to look forward to for 2017.

After today, there’s just one more home game before Christmas. And, pardon the pun, it’s a cracker!

On Saturday 17th December we host Redhill FC here at Westhumble. The history of friendly rivalry between our two clubs stretches right back to the 19th Century. Redhill’s first ever game was against the Chicks back in 1894 but, after playing each other fairly regularly for the best part of 80 years, we haven’t been in the same division since the old Athenian League folded in the 1970s. So it promises to be quite an occasion - and well worth putting the Christmas shopping on hold for just one Saturday afternoon.

I hope to welcome you back here for that in two weeks’ time. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy the game and your visit to Dorking FC today.

Kind Regards

Alan GoutChairman, Dorking FC

Good afternoon and welcome to Westhumble for today’s game against Epsom Athletic.

This afternoon’s encounter will undoubtedly be seen as a six-pointer by both sides as we both try to scramble up the table prior to Christmas. Our last game against Epsom triggered a rise in form for us over the following month and I hope that we will have a similar reaction after today’s game.

It was Dudley Klaton’s performance against us that day that prompted us to sign him, and he is one of a few recent signings that we hope will have an impact on our ambitions for the remainder of the season.

With our current form in mind, we decided this week that it was time to make a few changes to the playing squad. Jake Nimmo, Russell Hartt, Matt Finn, Paul Davies, Joel Saunderson and Jordon Boukhari have all left the club with our best wishes for the season. All have had defining moments in a Dorking shirt at some point and we thank them for their hard work and efforts since we started rebuilding the squad in the summer.

Meanwhile, we welcome Dennis Ongei and Dom Mackenzie to the club. Dennis is someone I have worked with at a number of clubs in the past and I am hopeful he will provide the bit of experience that we have been missing this year. Dom will provide strong competition for Tom Day between the sticks after training with us earlier in the season. Dennis and Dom follow Dudley’s recent arrival, and I hope they will be joined by one or two more new additions next week.

Will Conroy has become the latest graduate from

our ever-improving Ryman Youth League U18s team and I have been hugely impressed with his performances - more mature than anyone has a right to expect from a player of his tender years.

Will is a great example of what we are trying to achieve at Dorking FC. It was only a couple of years ago I remember seeing a slightly awkward, often nervous Will playing for Brighton and Hove Albion, and struggling somewhat against players of his own age. Not to be put off by the rejection from professional football, he has worked hard on his game and can now keep even much more experienced strikers at bay.

Hard work and patience is the key to all of this and I am confident there will be more to come, not just from Will but from a number of our squad, before the season is out.

I hope you enjoy the game.

Up the Chicks.

DFC PLAYER PROFILE

GEORGEKNIGHT

Ask George Knight his personal aim for this year, and his response is rather modest.

“I just want to last the season,” he says.

This somewhat basic objective can be attributed to an ACL injury that kept the former Molesey man out of the game for two years, before manager Danny Fox called in the summer and encouraged him to get back into non-league football as part of his squad rebuilding with the Chicks.

But ask anyone who saw the superb 25 yard strike against Worcester Park back in August (“my first goal for Dorking and one of my best moments in football”), and they’ll tell you that, if the knee holds up and he can establish consistency, George will contribute far more to the Chicks than simply “last the season”.

The striker first met Dorking boss Danny Fox when he was reserve team coach at Molesey and teamed up with him again at Sheerwater.

“But I got injured there and didn’t really get to play,”

George explains, “But we kept in touch and, when I got the call to come to Dorking, I welcomed the opportunity to get back into the swing of it.”

It certainly hasn’t been an easy return to the game for George, with Dorking building a home-grown squad for the long term rather than looking for instant success.

That means good results have been hard to come by, but George insists the team will eventually start picking up more points and he has no regrets about getting back into the game.

“There’s a passion to it all,” he says, “It takes you away from everyday work and normality.”

And is there anything he doesn’t enjoy about non-league football? Sitting in the changing rooms at Westhumble this week, about to go training with the thermometer reading -3°C, George doesn’t hesitate to answer.

“Winter weather,” he says. “It’s about time we made football a summer sport!”

Manager Danny Fox remains confident that his youthful team will continue to progress and

get back to winning ways despite falling to defeat at home to Eversley and California, extending the recent winless run.

A goal conceded early in each half cost the Chicks the match, although a spirited second half performance suggested that the boss’ optimism is far from misplaced.

Promotion chasing Eversley and California got a dream start, scoring after just two minutes. Dorking failed to get sufficient clearance on a corner and, as the visitors swung the ball back into the box, Ben Hutchins rose highest at the far post to head it back across keeper Tom Day and into the net.

Eversley continued to enjoy the best of the next 25 minutes and, with Dorking struggling to retain possession, the visitors camped in the Chicks’ half, winning six further corners. It took until nearly the half hour mark for Dorking to mount any sort of attacking threat, an Owen Hunte corner, deftly laid off by Alex Watts into the path of Kieran Lunn, but his fierce strike from the edge of the box was well wide.

Dorking, with an emphasis on developing local talent, fielded a back line with three teenagers from the club’s Under 18s and the performances of Watts, Will Conroy and Jack Wisbey, alongside the more experienced Hunte, was the only bright spot in a disappointing first half. It was only the resilience of the young defence, together with some wayward heading by the visitors, that kept Dorking in the game at half time.

The Chicks began the second half with far more purpose with the midfield brighter and Lunn and Jimmy Brazil running at the Eversley defence.

But hopes of a comeback were extinguished in the 52nd minute when the unfortunate Tom Day was unable to hold a low drive, spilling the ball at the feet of Eversley’s

Jordan Baker who gratefully accepted the opportunity to tap it into the net from five yards, doubling the lead.

The manager looked to more youth team graduates to increase the attacking verve, introducing James Herouvin and Ryan Lunn, and Dorking steadily began to increase the pressure on their opponents. With ten minutes to play, the Chicks were now enjoying by far their most prolonged attacking spell of the game and there were gasps from the crowd as an Alex Watts header flashed just marginally wide of the post.

With Dorking in the ascendancy, a goal at that point could have made for an interesting finish but, in the event, Eversley were able to see the game out in comfort as the Chicks drew a blank.

Danny Fox knows that his vision for the long term future of the team presents challenges in the short term, but saw enough in the second half to remain confident for the future.

“We’re certainly going through a difficult patch at the moment. But this is a new, inexperienced team and bit by bit we are getting there.

We will certainly need a lot of character and local support going into December and the Christmas period, but the second half was a much better performance and as soon as our players get to grips with the consistency needed over the whole 90 minutes, I’m sure the results will come.”

Dorking revived the historic friendly rivalry with Redhill in the first league meeting between the old neighbours

for more than forty years, but it was the Lobsters who deservedly took the spoils.

It’s a derby fixture stretching back to the 19th century and the game was played in the week marking the 122nd anniversary of the very first meeting between the two clubs, back in 1894. Since then, both clubs have experienced their fair share of ups and downs but it was Redhill who entered the game as the recent form side.

With the confidence of four straight wins behind them, the Lobsters hit their stride from the first whistle, and it was little surprise when they took the lead on 9 minutes. Kery Kedze did well to whip in a cross from the left, tempting Chicks keeper Tom Day to come for the ball and, when he failed to get a hand on it, Sam Marks made no mistake heading into the net from close range.

If Day might have hoped to do better with the cross on that occasion, Dorking had the 17 year old to thank for keeping the score down throughout the rest of the match, as rampant Redhill went on to dominate. Indeed, just a minute earlier, Redhill captain Abi Bolange had tried his luck from range and, as his shot took a wicked deflection, Day was quickly down to his left with a fingertip save to prevent an earlier opening for the home side.

Unusually, Dorking had set up with a back five but with the midfield looking sluggish and slow to the ball, the visitors found themselves penned deep in their own half, the full backs unable to get forward to support any offensive moves.

Indeed it took until 35 minutes for the Chicks to mount their first meaningful attack. RIght back Owen Hunte won the ball from a short Redhill corner, breaking with pace before feeding Ryan Lunn. The teenager did well to get past his man and into the box, but his cut back couldn’t quite reach Jimmy Brazil in a central position.

By then, Redhill had doubled their lead. From a throw-in, Marlon Pinder beat two Dorking defenders before playing the ball inside to Marks, who flicked it back into his path, setting Pinder clear to deftly lift the ball over the advancing keeper and into the far corner. It was a fine move, epitomising

the quality of Redhill’s football, but Dorking will know they afforded their opponents far too much time and space.

A stern half time talk and a double substitution saw the Chicks begin the second period with far more purpose. In contrast to the first half, Danny Fox’s team now pressed the ball throughout the pitch, and enjoyed far more possession as a result.

Nevertheless, it was still Redhill enjoying the better chances, with Tom Day diving superbly to push away a palm-stinging drive by Marks. And, as the home side looked to increase their lead, they found Dorking’s U18 defenders Jack Wisbey and Will Conroy playing like seasoned professionals rather than the sixth formers they are, as they repelled attack after attack.

Into the final ten minutes and the Chicks began to get sight of goal, the best effort coming from captain Jimmy Brazil, whose strike from a tight angle was cleared off the line. But, while resolute defending prevented Redhill from scoring again, Dorking rarely looked like they would get back into the game.

Having not met in a league fixture this century, Dorking and Redhill will play a local derby for the second time in less than a month as the return fixture is scheduled for Saturday 17th December here at Westhumble – kicking off at 3pm and offering serious competition to Christmas shopping plans.

THE HISTORY OFDORKING FC

Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street.

An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross.

On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event.

Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.

The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous.

In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an ill-fated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, before reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in 1981.

On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first

Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators.

The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion.

We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley.

The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.

An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally going home to the new Meadowbank for the 2017-2018 season.

Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey.

OPPOSITION HISTORY

EPSOM ATHLETIC FC

This Club has come a long way in its short history since 1997 and this has

been because of some hard work and great togetherness. The players that started with Epsom Athletic in the early days are the reason we are where we are today.

We started out in the Sutton & District League and made our way through three divisions, winning two of them. We then entered the Surrey South Eastern Combination League making our way through another three divisions. During that period we were runners up in two of the divisions. We also came runners up in the Senior Cup in 2003.

In 2006 we won the same cup and were also finalists in the Intermediate Surrey County Cup, losing to Holmsdale. We then entered the Surrey Elite League when it was formed in 2008.

Season 2010/2011 we came second behind Spelthorne Sports, this gave us the right to enter the Combined Counties League but because we didn’t meet the criteria we had to stay in the division. Season 2011/2012 started with us having a ground share agreement with Chessington and Hook United, this would

spur us on to try and gain a place in the CCL. We won the league with 3 games to spare and because we ground shared with a team in the CCL premier division we now meet the criteria. Season 2013/14 saw this Club play there very first FA cup match but lost to Croydon after leading at half time. We also won two games in the FA Vase which was a great experience for everyone involved. Results in the league were very indifferent and we ended up seven points adrift from the top three.

2014/15 is a season the Club wants to compete for this title and some silverware but can we maintain a start like season 2013/14 and not let any situation get the better of us. We are now a semi senior club with great ambition and ‘Togetherness and Spirit’ will put this club on the map.
