We regret to inform you that we will no longer be selling milk at school or participating in milk draws. We

tried several different approaches to purchase the milk in smaller quantities, however we were not sell-

ing enough before the milk would spoil. We of course encourage you to pack milk with your child’s lunch

as well as healthy dairy options.

Construction is still underway for the infant and pre-school building adjacent to the school. We hope to

see the project completed early in the new year. We will keep you posted with any updates as we re-

ceive them. Please feel free to call Laugh n’ Learn with any questions you have regarding registrations

@ 204-668-3050.

Our newsletters will continue to be printed and sent home with the youngest child in your family 3 times

a year with an additional update of year end information in June. I hope you have all received our mag-

netic calendars to post on your fridge. Our goal is to keep you updated with all of the special dates,

school closures etc. throughout the school year.

We appreciate your continued involvement in your child‘s learning. Your insight, comments, questions and information are all essential to the success of your child, and our school. Donwood School is truly a wonderful place to learn and grow. It is an honour to continue serving this community!

Should students use skateboard or scooters to come to school, we ask that students carry them on and off of the school property. Please ensure that all bikes are locked up in the bike racks provided. We request that students not bring electronic items and toys to school, un-less requested specifically for an academic purpose by a teacher. These items are often expensive or have sentimental value. Sometimes items can be damaged or misplaced causing much upset and disruption to class time. Thank you in advance for your support. This request serves to avoid prob-lems and foster an environment where positive social interactions contin-ue.

Fall 2016 Newsletter 6

Your son/daughter’s safety is very important to us. We have policies and procedures in place at both the divisional and school level to support their safety. In the past our school division has been working with the Winnipeg Police Service, (as well as referencing materials from the RCMP and Manitoba Education and Advanced Learning), in order to review and strengthen the procedures we have in place to protect students and staff in the event of a safety threat at school. We would like to share details of these updat-ed procedures with you now. Safety procedures now fall into two categories: Hold and Secure, and Lockdown. Hold and Secure will be activated if there is a potential threat outside the school . In these situa-tions, the police typically contact the school and direct the school to go into Hold and Secure. When there is no longer a threat outside the school building, the police inform us that we can resume regular activities. If our school is in Hold and Secure, the following procedures will apply:

All exterior doors will be locked.

NO ENTRY signs will be placed on each door.

No one will be permitted to leave or enter the school until school administration announces that Hold and Secure is over.

Lockdown will be activated if there is a potential threat inside the school building. If the school is in Lockdown, the following procedures will apply:

All students and staff will proceed to the nearest classroom or office.

All doors to classrooms and offices will be locked and/or barricaded by the supervising adult.

Students will be kept away from windows and doors and instructed to remain silent and still. No one will be permitted to leave their room until the Lockdown is over. All schools in RETSD are required to hold at least two Lockdown and one Hold and Secure prac-tice drills each school year. The purpose of the drills is to provide training for staff and students so everyone knows what to do in the event of a safety threat. Everyone in the school building will participate in these drills. Students, staff and parents will be informed in advance of these prac-tice drills. If your son/daughter arrives at school during a Hold and Secure or Lockdown procedure, he or she must proceed to the school evacuation site, sign in and remain there until directed otherwise by administration or police. The evacuation site for your son/daughter’s school is: Chief Peguis Junior High 1400 Rothe-say. If you arrive at the school during a Hold and Secure or Lockdown, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ENTER THE SCHOOL. For serious situations, please proceed to the parent/guardian information site where division-al personnel will arrive as soon as possible to assist you. The parent information site for your son/daughter’s school is: Jubilee Church 365 Edelweiss Crescent. If you hear about a serious emergency at your son/daughter’s school through media reports or other means, DO NOT PROCEED TO THE SCHOOL. Instead, proceed to the parent information site identi-fied above.

Please DO NOT CALL YOUR SON/DAUGHTER’S S CELL PHONE during an emergency, particularly in a Lockdown situation where it is critical to remain silent and still and not draw attention from any threat makers that may be in the building. In closing, our purpose in sending this letter is to reassure you that we regularly review our divisional safety procedures to ensure that we are doing our best to maintain the safety of your son/daughter’s learning environment. We do this through proactive planning and practise of emergency procedures in all of our schools. If you would like to read more information about safety policies in RETSD, please visit www.retsd.mb.ca/YourRETSD/Policies and scroll to Section E: Support Services. If you have any questions about the procedures described above, please feel free to contact the school Principal, Mrs. Anderson or the Vice Principal, Mr. Francis.

The safest practice when walking to and from school is to walk with at least one friend. Always come straight to school and go straight home after school, unless alternate ar-rangements have been made. Always walk where there are patrols to cross you. Our daily patrol schedule is:

8:40-8:55 11:40-11:55 12:30-12:45 3:30-3:45 Thanks patrols!! You are doing an awesome job!!

SAFETY INITIATIVES

To promote a safe school environment, all medications left over in June were returned. This is done to ensure that outdated medica-tion is not administered to your children. It is not unusual for head lice to be present in schools. Lice are very com-mon, and anyone can get them, though they usually affect children. Lice do not spread disease, and having head lice is not a sign of uncleanliness or poor hygiene. If your child brings home a letter regarding lice, it means that a child in his/her classroom has lice. We ask that you read the handouts carefully, and diligently check your child’s head every day for 2 weeks. The best chance to control lice is to catch it early and to treat it, before it can continue to spread. We thank you, in advance, for your coop-eration.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

In the River East Transcona School Division and Donwood School, there are many students known to have life-threatening allergies. The sub-stances that could cause these students to have a fatal reaction are var-ied: the most common are peanuts, peanut products (peanut butter) and nuts. For many of these students, contact with a very minimal amount could result in illness and even death within minutes. Contact with these products may occur without the student recognizing the danger. The oils from allergic food substances could easily transfer from your child’s hands to a desk, then to the child with life-threatening allergies and to his/her mouth. This could pose a serious threat to the child with the life-threatening allergies.

TO REDUCE THE RISK FOR STUDENTS WITH LIFE-THREATENING ALLERGIES

WE REQUEST THAT YOU NOT SEND FOODS CONTAINING PEA-NUTS, NUTS

OR PEANUT BUTTER FOR LUNCHES OR SNACKS.

Providing a safe school environment for all students is a responsibility shared by the student, the student’s family, school personnel and the school community as per divisional policy JLCG.

We appreciate your support in keeping the students on Donwood School safe!

Welcome back to a new school year from Ms. Hemphill’s class! We are off to an amazing start! In this room we have a marble jar that is slowly filled when we show CARES, all do our jobs and get positive feedback from other adults. As of Sept. 20

th, 2016 we only had 2 marbles left! It will be

filled in record time! Once it is filled we will help Ms. Hemphill choose a celebration. To get to know each other we have classroom meetings twice a day. We also each brought in something special to share with each other. It takes a lot of courage to speak in front of others. We have lots of courageous kids in here! We have just started our All About Me Unit, it will be full of learn-ing and fun! Roots of Empathy in 3/4H! Three times a month we get to meet with Ms. Klassen. She will be leading a Roots of Empathy program with our class. We feel amazed that our class was chosen for this! We will meet Baby Micah and his family in Oc-tober. We will watch him grow and change over the whole year. He will teach us about empathy, caring and kindness. We feel so excited to share lullabies with Baby Micah!

Judy Moody Judy Moody was in a mood, not a good mood, a bad mood. She felt miserable about starting school after her summer holiday. She felt nervous because… 1. There was no armadillo sticker on her desk. 2. There was no classroom porcupine named Roger. 3. She wouldn’t have a cool shirt from her summer like everyone else! 4. She would probably be stuck in the front row, next to Frank “Eats

Paste” Pearl. Mr. Todd could see her passing notes at her new seat. She was very wor-ried about all the changes! Once she came to school and got to know her classmates and teacher, she realized it wasn’t so bad. We are following the journey of Judy and doing an All About Me Project and “Me Collage” just like her! Stay tuned for more information!

PHYS-ED NEWS

Cross Country Run Club The Donwood Cross Country Run Club consisted of over 75 grades 1-5 students this year! We practiced in the mornings before school throughout the month of September. It was a great opportunity for the students to get energized and ready to start their day at school. Our grades 3-5 students were also training for the divisional cross country run meet which was held on September 29 at Birds Hill Park. The students had a very successful day of racing and had a whole lot of fun with their peers. Thanks to Ms. De-gen, Mrs. von Hacht, Mrs. Scarff, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Baran for joining us for the morning club practices and for the races at the park. We celebrate our run club success each year with a pancake breakfast and would like to say thanks to the parents who came in to make pancakes for the students.

Flag Football Club Once again we will be running a Flag Football Club for any interested students in grades 4 and 5. We will practice during lunch recess (12:15 – 12:45) in October in preparation for the divisional flag football tournament on Wednesday, October 12 at the East Side Eagles field (behind Kildonan East Collegiate). Students attending prac-tices and demonstrating good sportsmanship will have the opportunity to play in the tournament.

Volleyball Club There will be a Donwood Volleyball Club for interested students in grades 4 and 5 dur-

ing the months of October and November. Practices will be during lunch recess (12:15

– 12:45) two or three times a week in preparation for a local school tournament at the

end of November. More details about this event will be given to club participants.

Gym Clothes/Runners It is important for students to come to phys. ed. class prepared and ready to partici-pate. We ask that all grades 3-5 students change into gym clothes, which includes changing their t-shirt and perhaps changing into sweat pants or shorts if they wish. The K-2 students do not change into gym clothes.

All students must have an appropriate pair of indoor runners for playing in the gym.

PHYS-ED NEWS

Outdoor Phys. Ed. Classes We will take classes outside periodically for gym classes throughout the school year. Students should come to school prepared for the weather and outdoor play. This may include ski pants, winter boots, layers of warm clothes, a toque and mitts.

Be Active/Be Safe/Be a Good Sport Donwood students have spent time learning about being active, being safe and being a good sport in phys. ed. classes. Cooperation and teamwork are also important in the gym. We work together to exercise and have fun with friends. Please take time to ask about the games and activities we have been playing in the gym.

Terry Fox School Walk 2016 Each year the Donwwod School community participates in the annual Terry Fox

School Walk. This year the walk will be held at 2:45 – 3:15 on our school field on Octo-

ber 4th. Please help to support the fundraising cause. Students are encouraged to par-

ticipate in the fundraising by bringing in Loonies and Twoonies which will be collected

and counted by Mrs. Laurin’s grade 5 class.

Recess Activities Students in grades 1-5 will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun and challenging activities throughout the school year during recess time. Some of the ac-tivities we are looking to offer for students are: soccer, jump rope, dance, cup stacking, badminton, basketball and running activities.
