Step 1: ‘Chunk’ the knowledgehttps://wilmslowhigh.fireflycloud.net/independent-learning/advice-about-effective-revision-and-learning
Step 2: Use Knowledge Organisers
To encode and store a ‘chunk’ of knowledge in the way that it can be most easily retrieved you need to map it in a way that is correct and helpful to learn.
Example of a knowledge organiser
Step 3: Colour code ‘chunks’
Have a retrieval plan for every week...
... And know how to build it using an understanding of cognitive
scienceOr ‘why forgetting isn’t necessarily a
bad thing’
Storage and retrieval
To store and retrieve a ‘chunk’ of knowledge most effectively you should aim to revisit it 3 times.
Ebbinghaus’ Forgetting Curve and spacing/overlearning effect
Wiseheart – optimal intervals
Time to test Optimum interval between study sessions
1 week 1-2 days1 month 1 week2 months 2 weeks6 months 3 weeks1 year 4 weeks
Storage and retrieval
To store and retrieve ‘chunks’ of knowledge most effectively you should interleave them –mixing up different subjects, knowledge chunks and aspects of a ‘chunk’
Blocking vs Interleaving
Example of a spaced and interleaved revision plan
Topic 1 Topic 2 Topic 3 Topic 4
Week 1 1st 1st
2 1st
3 1st 2nd
4 2nd 2nd
5 2nd 3rd
6 3rd 3rd
7 3rd 4th
8 4th 4th 4th
Practice
Regular deliberate practice is the best way to improve performance. To improve performance you should be doing regular exam practice. Every practice session is an opportunity to become more fluent, and to eliminate mistakes.
Testing
S S S S or S T T T?
Revision must be active, not just re-reading, highlighting, rewriting
Testing and past exam questions actually help you to store information, as well as helping you to retrieve it. To store and retrieve knowledge most effectively you need to build in lots of testing and quizzing sessions. Research indicates that testing is the most effective form of learning information.
Watching a Yr 11 'revising'
• How active are they?• Are they watching and reading?– Speaking aloud (to you/a friend/themselves)– Rewriting notes– Writing ANSWERS– Reviewing and correcting with notes– Online
• Firefly subject pages• Quizlet/Memrise/subject specific websites (mathswatch, my-
gcsescience, doddle/Mrsalles)
