At the end of September 2014 we were both delighted to be at the Ditton Field re-launch. This ambitious project could not possibly have been completed without the generous donations we received, enabling the Foundation to contribute £311,000 towards the overall redevelopment. Thank you very much for your support.

This year we are focussing our attention on bursaries. These awards really do have a life-changing effect for the beneficiaries at Kingston Grammar School, and our aim is to increase the number of recipients over time from today’s 5% of our pupils to 10%. This we can achieve with your help, from donations and legacy pledges. In 2015-16 we will also begin raising awareness and funds for the crucial preservation work to be carried out to the 14th century stonework of the Lovekyn Chapel.

We still have some way to go to fund a pupil through their KGS education. A single 100% bursary requires over £150,000 worth of donations, so all gifts large or small are very much appreciated.

During the last three weeks of term, thirteen hardworking student callers from our Sixth Form phoned over 2,000 Old Kingstonians and managed to speak to 575 alumni to update details, inform them on upcoming KGS Friends events and promote the idea of giving a regular gift to our bursaries fund.

Deposit Return SchemeThank you to all of our parents who donated to the Class of 2015 Giving Scheme and enabled the purchase of iPads that will further enhance teaching and learning. The iPads are available in the Michael Frayn Library for use by all pupils and feature acknowledgement plaques thanking the donors.

We hope that many parents will consider donating their deposit to the School to enable us to offer bursary support to a greater number of deserving pupils who might otherwise not be able to take up a place here.

The £12,000 of pledges and gifts came from 44 donors, several of whom were giving for the first time. Gifts ranged from an increase in regular giving from £3-£5 to a regular gift of £100 a month.

This year we highlighted the importance of bursaries and how the School is committed to raising our current level of 5%, to 10% of all our pupils receiving potentially life-changing financial support.

The callers really enjoyed speaking to so many of our former students, learning from alumni who left ten or fifty years ago how the School has changed.

One caller, Upper Sixth pupil James Gawn recalls his conversation with an alumnus who studied during WWII. “His time at Kingston Grammar School seemed so different to mine in such trying circumstances, yet his memories were so vivid. There was actually an incredible similarity to our school days, albeit 70 years apart. It goes to show that facilities and teaching methods have come on hugely yet the community spirit and loyalty of pupils remains the same.”

In this year’s Impact Report we focus on alumni who have philanthropically chosen to support great causes, particularly education in all its guises.

For many Old Kingstonians, their experience at the School has led to a life-long appreciation of education and when they can, they help others to have the support and guidance they have come to value so much.

Alexander Wade (OK 1989) Alexander is a Partner in Knightsbridge Wealth Financial Services and a founder of The Fulham Boys School, a new Church of England Secondary School for boys.

“I wanted to say how grateful I am for the education I received as a KGS pupil. I entered on an assisted place as my mum wouldn’t have been able to afford to pay the fees, so I am hugely privileged they put faith and investment in 11 year old me.

“Knowing personally the difference a good education can make has been one of the factors that have driven my wife and I to set up our free school, The Fulham Boys School. We have three young sons at primary school and where we live, many parents either move out of the area to find better state schools or pay for education. We felt there should be more options so for six years we have been working on setting up a free school. In September 2014 we opened our doors to the first intake of 110 boys and I’m so pleased to think we have created a local school our sons can attend, very much based on the values that became entrenched in my days at KGS.”

Theo Coyne (OK 2002) Theo Coyne is currently Corporate Partnerships Manager for Beating Bowel Cancer, inspiring supporters to take part in “Decembeard” and be sponsored to grow a beard for one month every year.

“I had preconceived ideas about what a grammar school was and I thought it definitely wasn’t for me. When I began at KGS however, I realised I’d been very wrong and enjoyed it from the very beginning. I came to the School on what was then known as an assisted place. Without financial help, my parents wouldn’t have been able to send me to an independent school. I’m one of five, so the fact that three brothers came to KGS is largely down to this financial assistance.

“I still meet up every Saturday with a big group of Old Kingstonians! They were my closest friends then and remain so now. Looking back, it’s not been a conventional career or life since leaving school but I think the encouragement and pushing of boundaries which KGS instilled in me has set me up well. I don’t have a fear of failure as I was taught how to cope with losing hockey matches or not getting top grades. My life so far has taught me to cherish every moment and try everything.”

John Spiers (OK 1968) John is the CEO of EQ Investors. He gained an MA in Engineering at Clare College, Cambridge and worked in the City as a research analyst. In 1986 he set up Bestinvest, a leading private client advisory management business.

“When I look back, I realise that I have been unbelievably lucky about when and where I was born. I received a free education all the way through to 21 and I am hugely grateful. It is with that in mind that I focus some of my Foundation’s work on supporting open access to education. Organisations such as the Sutton Trust do a great job of opening up access to those who often perceive doors to be closed. Good education should be available to anyone, regardless of the wealth or status of their parents.

“The Spiers Family Foundation’s support of education reflects how passionately I feel about the power of education; a passion that Hans Woyda and KGS have undoubtedly contributed to!”

Matthew Collins (OK 1978) Matthew is a founding partner of private equity firm Hutton Collins & Company, and is a KGS Foundation Ambassador.

“Coming back and visiting the School today, it still feels palpably the same. I think the qualities of an Old Kingstonian, down-to-earth, tolerant, open-minded and not taking oneself too seriously, are all traits of which I am proud. Education has been the cornerstone of all the opportunities in my life. I still believe I have a charitable and social responsibility to support education, and that is why I am an Ambassador of the KGS Foundation.

“KGS Friends reunions have been the catalyst for re-establishing lost connections. I met several faces I’d not seen since I left and it has spurred me on to meet up with smaller groups of my contemporaries. I recently met some classmates and our old teacher Clive Barnett. It has been my only chance since leaving school to thank him for the huge impact his teaching had on me and my life. His instruction changed everything for me and I’m eternally grateful.”

Impact Report 2015: Weddings

Here at Kingston Grammar School we are always looking at ways to maximise our estate and during the School holidays and weekends many of our buildings are let out to external bodies. Alumni can get a special 10% discount – by quoting “ALUMNI15” before the end of 2015 – when they place a new booking to hire any of our facilities. Our Lettings Co-ordinator will be able to run through the spaces available such as the Theatre, Ditton Field and the Lovekyn Chapel.
