A record number of lives were saved last year - 461 organs are giving others a second chance at life! 49 organs went to research programs that will connue to enhance medicine for us all. Bone marrow was recovered from 8 donors. Thousands of individuals will be impacted through the use of ssue graſts, and 305 people had sight restored. A LifeShare donati on champion acts as a change agent within the unit and hospital by serving as a resource in real-ti me assisti ng peers working with all members of the care team and LifeShare staff and advocati ng for donati on with hospital leadership The goal of the champion role is to improve the donati on process through bett er collaborati on between hospital and LifeShare This can be used as a clinical ladder project If you are interested in becoming a donati on champion at your facility please reach out to your hospital donati on liaison

DONATION word searchDonati on aft er Cardiac Death (DCD) is an opti on for families of pati ents with severe brain damage who do not meet brain death criteria Aft er the decision has been made that the pati ent has no chance of a meaningful recovery and the family has decided to withdraw life-sustaining therapies the opti on of DCD is off ered LifeShare will obtain consent from the legal next of kin then get a medical social history LifeShare will evaluate the organs eyes and ti ssues for suitability and placement
Pati ent care conti nues to be guided by the att ending physician however LifeSharersquos organ recovery coordinators and medical director work closely with the physician and bedside nurse to manage pati ent care and maintain the opti on of donati on The bedside nurse plays a vital role in a DCD As the nurse conti nues to provide pati ent care he or she also works alongside LifeSharersquos organ recovery coordinators and family support staff to prepare the family for organ donati on through the DCD process
On the day of the DCD the bedside nurse will go to the OR with the pati ent and administer palliati ve medicati on as instructed by the att ending physician Family members are permitt ed to go to the OR with their loved one Aft er extubati on if death occurs within the predetermined ti me frame needed for organ donati on the family is escorted out and organs are recovered for transplantati on The pati ent may also be a ti ssue and eye donor
