'Donate Organs- Save Life' MAY 20213

On March 24th, 2020, when India had fewer than 600total reported infections, the country was put into oneof the strictest lockdowns in the world at four hours’notice. That lockdown, though flawed, surely slowed thespread in the initial days.

'Few months later as Govt eased restrictions, infectionsslowly rose, reaching almost 100,000 per day inSeptember, but the healthcare system held. By the beginning of 2021,when infections had ebbed and the economy began to limp back to life, the world felt that India was back, only to realize that worse was yetto come.

'Many shed their masks. They returned to markets and socialised.Even more restrictions were lifted. Covid-19 centres set up during thefirst wave were dismantled. Just as everyone started to believe that wehad defeated Covid-19, things escalated, to unimaginable heights. Thenear-vertical rise in the graph of infections in the last couple of weeksin the country of more than 1.3 billion people is being linked to, poorinfection control, new variants including a “double mutant” strain foundin close to two-thirds of samples in the most afflicted state of Maharashtra.

'As India recorded the world’s worst daily caseload of coronavirusinfections, the country’s overwhelmed health system teetered on the vergeof collapse. Critical facilities began to be scaled up to meet the demandsof the second wave that accelerated at an unprecedented pace, leadingto health-care facilities being overwhelmed; the number of deaths showsa sharp growth of over 10%. A mad scramble for hospital beds, oxygen, medicines, vaccines and even a quick funeral are still being witnessedin many cities.

'Doctors, healthcare workers, and relevant machinery in governmentas well as private sector have been working round the clock to tacklethe unprecedented calamity. With the relentless and dedicated work beingdone by the frontline workers, the Covid curve is definitely flattening inPune and other areas of Maharashtra, while Mumbai registered a sharp

Overcoming the Catastrophe

decline in new cases in past couple of weeks. Daily caseload in Mumbai has now decreasedby over 75% compared to its peak in April. The number of patients getting discharged fromhospitals is higher than fresh infections. The situation in the state is consistently improving onavailability of beds and oxygen.

'On the other hand, India’s COVID-19 vaccine coverage is picking up pace. India has startedthe largest vaccination drive in the world. Data shows as of today vaccination drive coveredjust 2.2% of India’s population compared to 24.4% in the UK and 32.7% in the US. It maynot be fair to compare vaccine coverage between countries owing to the huge population Indiahas. India’s daily vaccination numbers are high, though there are regions that still lag behind, due to patchy uneven access.

'India is now speeding up the vaccination drive by approving more vaccines and allowingpeople above 18 years to take the jab. The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine dosesadministered in the country so far stands at over 16 Crores. Vaccinating over 1 billion peopleis a mammoth task, and we have taken the task head on. While our pharma and vaccinemanufacturing has stepped up to the challenge of making enough vaccines not just for Indiabut also the world, it is now time to put the healthcare delivery system in place.

'BMC has started intuitive initiatives like drive-in vaccination centers to increase vaccineoutreach. BMC has also resolved to take vaccination drive to societies instead of keeping itlimited to vaccination centers. Corporate hospitals have shown their willingness to join their publicsector counterparts and the increasing daily numbers of doses administered is testimony notjust to reducing vaccine hesitancy but also increasing access. Having a wide spread-out networkof vaccination centres is crucial to treat and report back adverse events to the vaccine, thecrucial pharmacovigilance phase of any medical intervention.

'It is important to realise that the vaccine is not a magic bullet. With variants on the riseand a second wave eminent in key large states which are showing a steep rise in daily newcases, healthcare professionals must caution the newly vaccinated that masking, social distancing, etc must continue. It is important to ascertain that COVID Appropriate behaviour is followedeven after the vaccine is available. And most importantly, we need to begin a drive, not onlyto revamp hospitals in the govt sector as well as to set up new ones.

'We just don’t know enough about this virus. Or its variants. Therefore, while vaccinationis a must, so is surveillance, testing, and contact tracing. If there is one hard lesson fromthis pandemic, it is that no one is safe until everyone is safe.

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESKDear friends,Good Evening,

Respected Chief Guest, National President IMA Headquarters, Professor Dr. J.A. Jayalal sir, Guest of Honour, Secretary General IMA Headquarters Dr. Jayesh Lele,President Maharashtra Medical Council and Board Member National MedicalCommission Dr. Shivkumar Utture, invited Guests, Dignitaries on the dias & off thedias, office bearers, members of the managing committee and all of you my dearfriends.

It is a matter of great honour and pride for me to be standing before you asPresident of Mumbai Branch which is a prestigious and vibrant branch of the IndianMedical Association. I extend my gratitude to each one of you for considering me worthy of this honourand reposing your trust in me and my team. I shall always cherish this moment all my life.

I am very fortunate to have a very experienced team of office bearers who I know will stand firmlybehind me and a team of senior members who will always be available to guide me in fulfilling myduties as President of this branch.

Our basic aim is to serve the community and also uplift the image of our profession. We shouldnot only try to educate the masses about their rights as patients but also try to sensitize them abouttheir duties towards the medical professionals and the need to respect their doctors. Our fight againstMixopathy, is in reality, a fight for the rights of our patients and the respect of our profession.

It is only when we have large numbers as members that our voice to fight for justice can be heardloud and clear. For this we have to strive to increase the strength of Indian Medical Association members. Our Medical Student Network is a good way to sensitize young doctors to become members of IMA.I look forward to develop these students as future responsible doctors of IMA.

We have all experienced the CME's on web platforms, our meetings have been conducted digitally, even our conferences have been conducted the hybrid way. The digital world will be the future of ourconnection and communication. I shall strive to make my branch tech savvy and digitally advanced tomeet the challenges of the future.

Friends our branch is blessed with a bouquet of activities and I intend to continue all of them. Wehave Aao Gaon Chalen project and Mission Pink Health which to my mind is the best means of servingour rural population on a regular basis. A lot more activity can be clubbed with this project like creatingawareness on oral cancers, asthma treatment, diabetes, hypertension and geriatric problems.

I shall continue to promote all other activities of our branch.Friends since the beginning of the pandemic our profession has been under constant threat of losing

lives while serving the masses. It is sad and painful to learn that IMA has lost more than 700 membersfrom all over the country. I implored my friend Mr. Hemant Toprani to donate generously for the noblecause which he willingly obliged by donating a sum of Rupees Five Lakhs for the IMA Covid Martyrsfund. I thank him from the bottom of my heart.

The Vasectomy Centre is being inaugurated with the beginning of my tenure. I shall strive to makeit a very successful venture.

Before I conclude I take this opportunity to thank all the invited dignitaries, my seniors and friendsfor joining us online and in person today. On this occasion I thank my wife Dr. Asha and my daughterUshma and son-in-law Tejas for supporting me.

Lastly I thank Dr. Shivkumar Utture sir Dr. Anil Pachnekar, Dr. Hozie Kapadia, Dr. Aspi Raimalwala,Dr. Vijay Panjabi, Dr. Sujatunnisa Attar, Dr. Girish Lad, Dr. Pankaj Bandarkar Dr. Anil Avhad and

Good evening friends,Respected Chief Guest Prof Dr. J. A. Jayalal, National President of IMA

Headquarters, Guest of Honour Dr. Jayesh Lele Hon Secretary General IMAHeadquarters, Dr. Pankaj Bandarkar Hon. Secretary IMA Maharashtra State& Incoming President Dr. Jitesh Mehta senior leaders of our branch dignitarieson & off the dias and my dear friends

On 28th June last year with all your blessings I accepted the responsibilityof the President's post from Dr. Prakashchandra Borana. It was a uniqueexperience for all of us as the installation was on a hybrid platform.

The entire year was very hectic and challenging. It is said "the show must go on". Thuswe had our seminars, cme's, Managing Committee meetings office bearers meetings on digitalplatform. By default we all became tech-savvy.

AMSCON was hosted on 13th September 2020, more than 2217 delegates from India andabroad participated. Our branch annual conference MIMACON was a thundering success on digitalplatform where more than 3336 members attended online.

The one who truly understands the suffering of rural population will overcome all the adversityin the path of rural health upliftment. Our mission pink health and Aao Gaon Chale project wascontinued and I thank Dr. Sunita Shanbhag madam and her team for the same.

Healthy mind in healthy body. Yoga classes are being conducted every Sunday in our branchpremises. I thank our yoga guru Dr. Kishor Gandecha for his enthusiasm in continuously conductingthese classes for the last 6 years. We also organized cricket tournament this year along withparticipation of MSN students thanks to the coordination of Chairman of MSN Maharashtra StateDr. Ajoy Saha, Dr. Girish Rajadhyaksha and Dr. Sachin Patharkar.

Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) has taken unmindful decision of allowing Ayushdoctors to perform certain surgical procedures. IMA has strongly opposed and condemned thisMIXOPATHY. As per the directives of Indian Medical Association headquarters and Indian MedicalAssociation Maharashtra State a relay hunger strike was held on 5th February 2021. Wesymbolically burnt our registration certificate on 11th September 2020. There was a largeparticipation by Indian Medical Association Members and MSN students.

IMA Family Planning Center was established in 1976 and was running successfully almostfor 43 years. We had to close the Family Planning Center due to refusal of Central Governmentauthorities to support the programme. With the efforts of Dr. Hozie Kapadia and Dr. AspiRaimalwala we had generous funding from Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla and Mr. Adar Poonawalla torestart the center. Now we have a State of the art family welfare and vasectomy centre inour premises. Expert doctors will perform vasectomy free of cost.

I thank Dr. Jitesh Mehta Incoming President for arranging a huge donation of rupees 5lacs from Toprani Trust for COVID MARTYRS FUND. Dr. Shashikant Kamat also lent his helping

WHY BECOME A MEMBER OF INDIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (IMA)Dear colleagues,

Indian Medical Association (IMA) is the largest and the fastest growing non-governmentorganization (NGO) of over two and half lakhs health care providers. It spans across the countryand has over 1800 branches. It attracts a variety of physicians from MBBS doctors, specialists andsuper specialists from urban, sub-urban and rural India and a wide age span. The primary missionof IMA is to unite the medical fraternity under one banner and ultimately advance the medical sciencefor the betterment of the masses. Simultaneously, it seeks to safeguard the interest of the medicalfraternity in this ever changing milieu of medical profession.

In the light of this ever changing field, Medical Council of India (MCI) has recently recognizedthe importance of continuous medical education (CME). It has now become mandatory that the medicalfraternity comply with the CME credit hours regulation to renew their medical registration. IMA isaccredited by the MCI to grant credit hour points to doctors and has taken the onus of advancingthis complex field by hosting regular conferences, CME's which are very well received.ACHIEVEMENTS OF IMA

1. There is an increasing threat to the safety of doctors especially the young ones. Becauseof constant representation of these concerns by IMA to the state government of Maharashtra, there is now a law in place to protect the doctors and its establishments.

2. Similar efforts are being undertaken by the IMA at the central government also.3. IMA is successful in motivating the Standing Committee in Delhi to summarily reject the

NCHRH Bill (National Council for Human Resource in Health).4. The draconian CEA (Clinical Establishment Act) was strongly opposed by IMA. IMA was

successful in drafting a Maharashtra specific CEA which is both doctor and patient friendly.5. There are stringent rules set forth for renewing licenses for nursing homes, fire fighting

provision rule, FDA regulations and PCPNDT Act etc. IMA is engaged with the concernedagencies in streamlining the process and create a hassle free environment for medicalprofession.

6. BENEFITS AVAILABLE TO IMA MEMBERS1) IMA is accredited by the MCI to grant credit hour points to doctors.2) Medico-legal cell help round the clock for the members.3) Profession Protection Scheme (PPS) (Indemnity - 10 Lakhs) at nominal fees.4) Airing your views and grievances through BIMA (Bulletin of IMA)5) Social Security Schemes popular as "Make your Nominee a Millionaire", gives benefits

to the next of kin of the deceased life member.6) Guest room facilities available in IMA branches all over India at highly concessional rates

(List available at IMA office).7) 50% discount on rent of IMA Hall (renovated) and Lawns.8) Discounts on purchases of new car and on car insurance renewals.9) Membership is transferable all over India. The MCI recommends that every graduate be a part of a recognized medical association and

IMA fulfils this mission perfectly. IMA is a perfect platform for all the practitioners, particularly for youngpractitioners who are still learning the nuances of medicine and work of this profession. The bestpart is that the IMA membership is transferable to any part of India. We welcome you all to shareyour interest with us.
