SCNM.EDUSCNM 20th Anniversary

T he SCNM Board of Trustees has been engaged with the college in an exciting campus master planning process

to determine how we can expand and enrich campus facilities within the confines of a small piece of land and within our limited financial resources. Our goal is to improve the student experience, increase our instructional capacity, and enhance SCNM’s image and public visibility. While it is fun to fantasize about planning with unlimited space and resources, constraints are what really engage the mind and

stimulate the imagination. Thus, what started as a routine master planning process has evolved into a fascinating creative collaboration with the campus community, the board, designers, bankers, financial managers, architects, developers, and engineers bringing their most creative ideas to the task of “maximizing the possible.”

The project emerging from this process combines the best ideas that rose to the top through inclusive discussions with stakeholders. In its current state, the plan involves replacing the “annex” building along Broadway Road with a new two-story building containing just under fifty thousand square feet. The first floor would be a “public space,” housing a pain clinic (or similar focused facility), a full-service pharmacy, a café (food!) with a teaching kitchen, and a large room serving as a classroom and a general meeting room. The

clinic, pharmacy, and café would be developed with outside partners and provide not only enhancements for students and staff but also revenue to offset the cost of the building. The second floor would be oriented toward the campus community and educational objectives, providing needed library space, a welcome center, an exercise room, general classrooms, and flexible space to accommodate other academic uses that arise. The area around the building would be nicely landscaped. The entrances to the campus

and the crazy car and pedestrian traffic flow would be rationalized for safety and convenience. And, SCNM would have a handsome new presence along Broadway Road to increase its visibility and standing in the community.

Some of the details will change as the creative process continues. But the board has authorized the planning to proceed and will discuss a proposal to move forward with detailed planning and construction at the next meeting, with a goal of completing the project in 2014. This is an exciting moment in the life of the college; and, as the signs say on construction sites, “Watch this Space!”

care sites top 100,000. We’ve conducted and published

clinical and bench-top research on naturopathic therapies

and received funding from the National Institutes of Health. The college steadily grew its enrollment and expanded and

enhanced the campus, first with a move from Scottsdale to the Tempe campus in 1996, and continuing with the new medical center in 2010. In the last few years, curriculum changes and innovative teaching methodologies like team-based and problem-based learning have been equally as important as the physical moves and improvements. Also, SCNM has consistently expanded the amount of free patient care provided in medically-underserved communities, fulfilling a vital part of our mission.

SCNM’s Board of Trustees recently voted to proceed with

a major change to the Tempe campus. The addition of a 48,000 square foot mixed-use facility will create new classroom space, quadruple the size of the library, open a new pain and performance clinic, and add a café, demonstration kitchen and integrative pharmacy. The building will support a number of SCNM initiatives to enhance the student, staff and faculty experiences and increase community education and outreach. Fronting the Broadway Road side of the campus, the new building will also serve as the face of SCNM and invite the public onto our campus.

SCNM operates in two dynamic environments: education and health care. We are fortunate to have an extraordinary board, talented faculty and bright, dedicated staff that not only serve our students and patients today, but also engage with creativity and passion to plan for the future. I look forward to continuing to update you throughout this anniversary year.

Twenty five years of gastroesophageal reflux disease

(GERD), which can appear as heartburn, can cause a lot

more damage than just discomfort. Chronic inflammation and

even esophageal cancer can occur as a result. Most sufferers

take medication and some even undergo a drastic surgery. But,

what most people don’t know is that naturopathic physicians

can oftentimes uncover the specific reasons the person has

GERD, and treat the root of the problem. When I had a patient

present with this scenario, taking three prescriptions to no avail

and scheduled for surgery, a food allergy test revealed dairy

and egg allergies. Removing those foods, making a few dietary

changes, and adding a simple supplement regimen changed

this patient’s life. Within two months, he was off all of his

drugs, cancelled his surgery and was 100% GERD free - he

was amazed at the results!

This is just one example of how naturopathic physicians can uncover the hidden causes for a patient’s digestive or intestinal condition. In naturopathic medicine, the philosophy

6

1. Eating fast or junk food

2. Eating too much refined sugar

3. Not eating enough fiber

4. Eating chemicals and preservatives

5. Drinking too much caffeine and/or alcohol

6. Low intake of fruits and vegetables

7. Overeating and/or eating too quickly

8. Lack of variety in diet

9. Eating meat from agri-industry feedlots—

these products have hormones, antibiotics,

inflammatory meat, and are lower in nutrients

and higher in calories

10. Eating non-organic food, which is higher in

chemicals and lower in nutrients

11. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)—

these engineered foods can cause damage

to the intestines. They are found in most corn and soy products, regular sugar refined from beets, canola and cottonseed oil, some zucchinis, papaya, and the artificial sweetener aspartame.

What are the reasons the gut can break down?

There are many factors

Your Gut, Your Health

of sickness and health centers on the functional capacity of the gut. The food one eats, how one chews and digests it, absorbs it, metabolizes and uses the food, and then excretes it are all part of how a person maintains their whole body, or systemic, health.

The gut, or gastrointestinal tract, consists of many organs; it begins with the esophagus and continues to the stomach,

Page 9: Don’t STRESS About Stress - PageTurnPro · and treating them naturally 2510 Tips to Fight Fatigue & Boost Energy 26Donor Thank Yous 15 Meet Elena ... Twenty five years of gastroesophageal

SCNM.EDUSCNM 20th Anniversary 7

pancreas, gallbladder, liver, small intestine and large intestine. The gut’s main function is to digest food and absorb the nutrients. The gut is also filled with beneficial bacteria, which help it digest food, absorb nutrients, detoxify the intestines, feed the lining of the gastrointestinal tracts and reduce the risk of food poisoning. The more beneficial bacteria one has, the stronger the immune system and the risk of getting colds and flus lessen.

The gut is very sturdy, but modern day living can irritate it, inflame it, and cause it to break down. For an ND, treating the gastrointestinal tract is common.

Too much stress causes the adrenal glands to excrete extra cortisol, a stress hormone. Cortisol wears down the gut’s mucous protective layer, which is very damaging and has to be reversed to regain health. Working with a patient to manage stress is very important to good gut health. The gut is also injured by antibiotics, many over-the-counter drugs and prescription medications.

When the gut breaks down, it’s common for patients to develop food sensitivities which are associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease, gallbladder inflammation, inflammatory colitis, gas/bloating, irritable bowel disease, constipation, diarrhea and other problems. Food allergies are frequently the cause of many systemic problems like asthma, psoriasis and eczema, migraines, chronic sinusitis, kidney disease, anxiety, depression, weight gain and autoimmune diseases.

Another problem that occurs when the gut is imbalanced is dysbiosis, a negative change in gut bacteria—fewer good bacteria and more pathogenic, disease-causing bacteria. Symptoms include gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea and irritable bowel.

A third problem with gut breakdown is the inability to properly absorb nutrients. If digestion is not working well, fewer enzymes or less bile may be secreted. Impaired absorption causes many gut symptoms, but it will also cause systemic disease as the body isn’t receiving vital nutrients. Signs of deficiency include fatigue, numbness/tingling of the hands or feet, osteoporosis, mood disorders, or restless leg syndrome.

nDs often recommend these tests:

1. Food sensitivity testing—this blood test can reveal up to 200 food reactions and is the most popular gut-associated test NDs do.

2. Stool culturing—this test analyzes the good bacteria in the gut, as well as bacteria which have overgrown or are pathogenic to the gut. It checks for fungal overgrowth and the existence of parasites. Additional testing can analyze fatty acids, inflammatory markers, and digestive capability of the gut.

3. Candida questionnaire—this form helps determine if a patient has a fungal overgrowth.

4. Diet diaries—having the patient record what they eat and drink allows an ND to analyze their diet nutritionally, hormonally and pro/anti-inflammatory components.

5. Cortisol and DHEA testing—this saliva analysis helps determine if cortisol is too high and/or if DHEA too low which can affect energy levels, emotional state, disease resistance and general well-being.

Naturopathic physicians work with patients to remove what is damaging the gut, the “obstacles to cure,” then recommend

effective methods to heal the gut.

With appearances on Dr. Oz and The Doctors, and now her own

show, Myth Defying with Holly on the Veria Living Network,

Dr. Holly Lucille is not only spreading the word about naturopathic

medicine, she’s shouting from the mountaintop. An author, practicing

physician, natural product consultant, and now a TV personality, Dr.

Holly exemplifies the opportunities available to NDs. During her

journey, she’s asked a lot of questions and has taken many leaps

of faith.

Dr. Holly questioned conventional medicine at a young age, which

posed a challenge for her parents, two pharmacists. Drawn to patient

care, her desire to help people led her to nursing school. When Holly

saw an ad for naturopathic medicine in the American Journal of

Nursing, she asked herself, “What is that?” Treating the root cause

of an illness resonated with Holly, and her next step crystallized…she

would become a naturopathic doctor.

Drawn to the sunny Arizona climate, Holly chose to attend SCNM.

Her drive during school led her to become the president of the

Student Government Association and work as a nurse on the

weekends. For her “commitment to naturopathic medicine, academic

excellence, compassion, perseverance, a loving sense of humor and

a positive, supportive outlook,” she was given the prestigious “Daphne

Blayden Award”; and for her “contribution to the advancement and

development of the field of naturopathic medicine,” she was presented

the “SCNM Legacy Award.”

By taking risks and saying “yes” to opportunities, her career began to

take off after she graduated and moved back to California. Armed with

the corporate sponsor certificates she received at graduation and the

chance to rent space at an existing practice, Holly jumped right in and

started practicing. Her involvement with the California Naturopathic

Doctors Association presented the opportunity to become the chief

fundraiser for licensing NDs in California. She threw her name into

the ring for a consulting position with Enzymatic Therapy and was

hired. She also penned a book, “Creating and Maintaining Balance:

A Woman’s Guide to Safe, Natural, Hormone Health.”

Naturopathic medicine inspires passion, and Dr. Holly’s enthusiasm

has taken her to new levels by following the principals of naturopathic

medicine and believing in herself.

Don’t STRESS About Stress

If you breathe, you probably have stress. Though sometimes inherently motivating and beneficial, stress

can negatively impact our health, livelihood and well-being.

Stress can be harmful to our bodies, especially after long periods of time. According to a study published in the International Journal of Stress Management, “greater post-traumatic stress disorder and depression symptoms were related to diminished physical health and poorer functioning” in veterans (1). We see that stress causes our blood pressure to rise, heart rate to increase, digestion to slow down, immune system activity to be inhibited, as well as a number of other bodily changes.

There are many signs you may have “stress overload.” Some examples are fatigue, depression, heart disease, infections like colds and flus, insomnia, stomach upset, changes in libido and more.

There are effective treatments to not only treat the symptoms of stress, but also get to the root cause and treat the whole person. Naturopathic medicine approaches stress with a three-pronged approach:

1. Give the Body What it needsThe foundation of health is rooted in proper nutrition, fresh air, rest, relaxation, exercise and much more. When the body is healthy, our ability to thrive in the face of stress and opposition becomes greater.

A key element to staying healthy and managing the inevitable bouts of stress is rest and relaxation. There are many mind-body techniques that you can employ to improve self-awareness and promote peace and relaxation such as meditation, hypnosis, biofeedback, and neurofeedback.

Biofeedback and neurofeedback are used to help facilitate a greater harmony in the body and mind by empowering patients to gain awareness of their physiological changes. With this knowledge, the facilitator can teach the patient how to change their physiological activity. With training and

practice, patients are able to cognitively improve their own health and performance, as well as resilience to stress.

There are also things you can do on your own including getting a good night’s sleep. Our bodies regenerate when we sleep, and when we are not well rested, our body taps into its reserves to help push us through. The average adult benefits from around eight hours of sleep per day, while a teenager or child may require more.

Also, during times of increased stress, we often allow our diets to fall to the wayside. Eating foods that are processed, caffeinated, or high in carbohydrates and sugar add stress to your body; whereas whole foods like fruits, vegetables, good oils and healthy sources of protein help your body to function optimally. I suggest shopping around the perimeter of the grocery store, emphasizing fresh and organic sources of nutrients.

Often overlooked is the importance of nurturing your emotional well-being. Take time to appreciate the blessings life has given you; spend time with friends and loved ones. By taking a moment out of each day, filling yourself with something good and positive, you not only take a step towards reducing your stress, but you actually activate your parasympathetic nervous system which is associated with relaxing and resting. One of my favorite quotes is “Disease cannot exist in a bliss-filled state.”

2. Promote Healthy Removal of Waste and ToxinsUnfortunately, we live in a toxic world. We are exposed daily to pollutants like car exhaust or phthalates in our plastic containers. Our bodies are incredible detoxifying machines, though, and are able to remove unwanted waste through sweat, tears, exhalation of carbon dioxide, stool, urine and more. Health problems can be caused by inappropriate build-up of toxins that get stored in your tissues, which in turn cause more stress on your body. Move your body, exercise and sweat, keep your digestion moving by drinking plenty of water and eating foods high in fiber. Some people also benefit from colon hydrotherapy or saunas.

Page 13: Don’t STRESS About Stress - PageTurnPro · and treating them naturally 2510 Tips to Fight Fatigue & Boost Energy 26Donor Thank Yous 15 Meet Elena ... Twenty five years of gastroesophageal

SCNM.EDUSCNM 20th Anniversary 11

3. Stimulate the Body’s natural ability to HealWhen you get a cut on your hand, it does not last forever. It is the same with overall health: when our bodies are healthy, and our inherent ability to heal is functioning optimally, many of the underlying issues naturally begin to get resolved. In naturopathic medicine, we call the innate ability to heal the “vis medicatrix naturae” or the “vital force.” This can be stimulated through a variety of methods of treatment such as homeopathy, acupuncture and hydrotherapy.

Stress is inevitable; what sets the healthy and thriving apart from the worried and ill is how you manage it. Your body has an incredible and innate capacity for health. Giving your body what it needs, paying attention to your emotional state, helping your body remove unwanted waste, and taking part in healthy activities and naturopathic treatments to promote your natural healing ability will allow you to see incredible positive changes. Not only will you begin to experience more health and wellness, but also you may notice that your vitality for life, your joy, and your energy toward work and play will also increase.

Campus Expansion Moves ForwardTeaching Kitchen, Café, Integrative Pharmacy, Pain Clinic, More Included in Plans

Imagine a new 45,000 square foot mixed-use facility on

SCNM’s campus with multi-media classrooms, an expanded

library, café, demonstration kitchen, integrative pharmacy, a

naturopathic pain/rehabilitation center, and a fitness area.

The new building will enhance the SCNM experience for

students, staff, faculty and patients by expanding medical

center services, engaging the public in education, and

providing amenities for everyone who works or studies at

the college.

This expansion grew out of the Campus Master Plan,

which aligns with SCNM’s Five-Year Strategic Plan. Ayers

Saint Gross (ASG), the country’s leading campus planning

architecture firm facilitated discussions with students, staff

and faculty about the array of options for expanding the

campus to meet current and future needs.

“I’m excited to share these concepts as they were developed

with the SCNM community in mind. Many of the ideas

from the ASG focus groups with students, staff and faculty

have been incorporated into this new building,” said Dr. Paul

Mittman, SCNM’s President.

Design and construction applications have been submitted

to the City of Tempe and a request for proposals from

commercial and investment banks for financing has been

initiated with the goal of breaking ground in 2013.

SCNM.EDUSCNM 20th Anniversary

When our three week old daughter, Elena, developed a painful

scaly rash, my husband and I tried everything to help her but

it kept getting worse. Soon enough, she was covered from

head to toe. She was suffering and her scratching was making

her bleed. We changed the laundry detergent and her bath

soap and followed our conventional doctor’s advice. Nothing

helped, and to make matters worse, she had gastric distress

and couldn’t keep any formula down. We didn’t know what to

do or where to turn.

When she was a few months old, we took her to the SCNM

Medical Center to see Dr. Matthew Baral. In her first visit, he

prescribed a homeopathic remedy that improved her skin

overnight. He also recommended a different formula and

probiotics for her gastric distress and she started feeling better

immediately. Within two to three months, she was looking and

feeling so much better.

Dr. Baral determined that Elena was allergic to soy and milk. He

also quickly diagnosed her with a cranial condition; she had a

flattened section in the back of her head that our primary care

doctor hadn’t noticed. If Dr. Baral did not catch that, she never

would have been treated.

Elena is 16 months old now and she is such a happy baby! With the help of Dr. Baral, we are better informed about dietary choices

doctor like Dr. Baral…he knew exactly how to treat Elena.

I’m amazed at the patient care my family has received in the SCNM Medical Center. The doctors spend so much time with the

patients and they actually call to check in on your progress! The results are great with naturopathic medicine and the

doctors really care.

Botanicals to fightbioterrorism?SCNM researchers asked themselves this very question when smallpox reemerged as a bioterrorism threat after September 11, 2001.

In collaboration with the Arizona State University Biodesign Institute and the Center for Disease Control, the SCNM Research Department embarked upon re-examining century-old claims made for an herb’s ability to fight smallpox. Using laboratory studies, SCNM researchers have demonstrated that this botanical inhibits the viral replication of smallpox and could be used as a potential therapeutic. Using cutting-edge technology, this work went on to describe the actual target during the viral replication cycle against which the herb is working. The smallpox project is one of many SCNM has undertaken to explore the effectiveness of naturopathic therapies in the treatment of disease.

The majority of research in natural therapies has focused on single-agent studies, isolating nutrients or herbs for the treatment of disease. SCNM research is unique in that researchers are taking this concept one step further by

looking at the effectiveness of single herbs and how they work specifically against various pathogens, then creating blends based on those findings. These blends get away from single-agent and single-drug limitations by promoting rapid healing, preventing drug resistance, and targeting pathogens at several points instead of one.

“We’ve developed a system to screen hundreds of herbs to see which ones are effective in combatting viruses and bacteria. Basically, we score each herb; this provides us with the data to formulate blends based on the top effective herbs. By using these modern methods, we’re putting science behind historical therapies to advance botanical medicine and create the most effective treatment for therapeutic care,” said Dr. Jeffrey Langland, SCNM Research Department Co-Chair and joint faculty with the ASU Biodesign Institute.

With these projects and several others, SCNM is validating and improving upon hundreds of years of medicine and bringing it into today’s world.

Why take a pain reliever

Did you know food allergies can be a factor in migraine headaches, joint pain, and painful rashes among many other health complaints? There are often hidden factors causing pain.

Pain can range from being a nuisance to a distraction to disabling. SCNM pain specialists use a whole-body approach to find and treat the cause. We look at patients’ lifestyle, diet, leisure and work activities, stress, injury and strains/sprains to fully assess each individual’s needs.

If conventional medicine has not helped, you want to get off prescriptions or avoid surgery, or have been suffering from a traumatic event like a car accident or work injury…try a different approach, try naturopathic medicine.

Pain is among the most common reasons that patients seek medical care. Nobody wants to hurt, although it can be brought on by our lifestyles and activities like my patient Bill’s carpel tunnel. Pain is subjective and can’t be measured except by what the patient tells us. It can range from being a nuisance to a distraction to disabling. Three primary causes of pain are tissue injury, nerve injury and psychological/emotional pain.

The musculoskeletal system represents about 60% of the human body, so it makes up a significant aspect of pain

management. This usually involves tissue injury through trauma, strains/sprains, overuse and disease processes. Among the most common pain complaints seen at the SCNM Medical Center are spine (neck and low back) and extremity (knee, ankle, shoulder and wrist) conditions. Accidents, a patient’s occupation, overuse or exercise, as in “weekend warrior” activities, are typical causes.

In accordance with the naturopathic principles of “find and treat the cause” and “treat the whole person,” an ND’s evaluation includes a history, a physical examination, diet

“When I developed carpal tunnel in my left hand and couldn’t golf, I visited my primary care physician for treatment

options. He referred me to a hand specialist whose first and only recommendation was surgery.

I had seen ads for less-invasive procedures, so I started looking for alternatives. I saw SCNM Medical Center’s

Dr. Nick Buratovich on one of his student rotations. We discussed several options; and on my first visit, I received

acupuncture, cold-laser and physical manipulation treatments. I was golfing within days. After five appointments,

I’m done with my treatments.” – Bill

diary in many cases, blood tests and diagnostic imaging as needed to determine the cause and institute an individualized treatment program.

Physical treatment modalities used are acupuncture, physio-therapies, manipulation and various injection techniques. To treat Bill’s carpel tunnel, we used several

physical modalities to treat the cause. Also utilized in a medicinal context are nutrition, both diet and supplements, as well as botanical and homeopathic medicines. If necessary, prescription items can be called in to the patient’s pharmacy, and referrals for surgical intervention are made. Mind-body techniques, including neurofeedback and counseling, are also offered for psychological/emotional causes of pain. Movement therapies and exercise are also recommended to tone and relax muscles and create new postural patterns.

Acupuncture, the placement of sharp and thin needles along various meridian points found on the skin, is a time-honored treatment modality for pain relief. Physio-therapies include ultra sound, electrical muscle stimulation, hydrotherapy and low-level light therapy (cold laser). At the SCNM Medical Center, physicians have digital foot scanning available for individualized shoe inserts, a.k.a. orthotics, to correct postural faults which may contribute to lower extremity pain and back pain.

Physicians may utilize joint manipulation to correct joint

restrictions and misalignments which can lead to joint stiffness and muscle tension and pain. Both manual manipulation and the Activator Technique can be applied to both the spine and the extremities. Massage therapy can be used as an adjunct to manipulative therapy or as an independent service for both pain management and relaxation.

Injection techniques to help manage pain include neurotherapy, trigger point injections and prolotherapy, which is also known as regenerative injection therapy. Neural therapy involves very superficial injections of a local anesthetic over the painful area which raises a small bleb or quaddle on the skin. The resulting nervous system reflexes help reduce pain. Trigger point injections also use a local anesthetic along with nutritional substances and homeopathic medicines as needed to control muscle-related tension and pain. Typically, the injection is placed in the belly muscle or its attachment site to facilitate relaxation and pain relief.

Prolotherapy is primarily used for tissue laxity causing joint instability which is seen in acute and chronic pain conditions. When a ligament or tendon is over-stretched through injury, its instability leads to pain. The injection materials include a concentrated dextrose solution and a local anesthetic, to which a tissue proliferant and nutritional and homeopathic injectables may be added. This is injected into the fibro-osseous junction or intra-

articular space and stimulates a local tissue (inflammatory) reaction which is controlled. It stimulates fibroblasts to create new tissue—ligaments, tendons and fascia—which tighten up the joint to improve function, return stability and decrease pain. It is like planting a seed or creating a spot weld or reknitting the tissues. It takes time but can be permanent.

NDs also use nutritional, botanical and homeopathic medicines which promote pain relief and muscular relaxation and provide an anti-inflammatory response. Dietary recommendations are also made including a recommended anti-inflammatory diet. It is also fundamental to address any GI issues to maximize digestion and absorption.

aStudents Stepping out of the ClassroomHands-on electives and community service give SCNM students an education outside of the classroom.

SCNM students started Naturopaths Without Borders (NWB) in 2004 by

launching a worldwide effort to provide naturopathic health care to impoverished

communities. NWB first partnered with New Birth Mexican Mission, a church

serving Puerto Peñasco residents, in 2010 after working in Puerto Peñasco

since 2006. Students see many patients for obesity and uncontrolled type

2 diabetes. Patients also come to the clinic for musculoskeletal pain and

injuries, tooth pain, chronic depression, diabetic neuropathy, facial paralysis,

men’s and women’s health issues, pregnancy, and common infectious illness.

Student volunteers, under the direct supervision of a licensed physician, have

the opportunity to see patients for follow-up visits, witness amazing patient

transformations and experience the power of naturopathic medicine during

NWB’s monthly visits to Puerto Peñasco. Naturopathic medicine makes a

difference for poor communities like Puerto Peñasco and is a great resource

due to its focus on “docere,” ability to address the cause of disease and

affordability. www.naturopathswithoutborders.org

1. After waking, expose yourself to sunlight. This triggers a decrease in melatonin, the hormone which induces sleep, promoting wakefulness.

2. Stretching is another fantastic way to jump start metabolism. Stretching brings circulation to the hands and feet, increases temperature and facilitates wakefulness. Taking a few deep breaths enhances the effect.

3. Another easy way to increase morning energy is to end your shower with a cold rinse. Finishing a warm or hot shower with 30-60 seconds of cold water leaves the body in a more vitalized state, enhances immunity and is incredibly invigorating.

4. Eat breakfast. This will facilitate a healthy metabolism, provide the energy to last until lunch and help maintain appropriate eating patterns throughout the rest of the day.

5. Eating some protein as part of your breakfast provides sustained energy to last all morning.

6. Take a multivitamin. This will ensure that you have the vitamins and minerals required for proper endocrine and metabolic function.

7. Eat a lunch low in simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates such as white bread, potatoes and chips cause a temporary elevation followed by a drop in blood sugar, experienced as afternoon fatigue. A combination of protein and fiber-rich foods, such as a salad or vegetable-rich soup, will provide more sustained energy.

8. Regular exercise increases circulation, metabolism and energy levels. It also decreases the stress of the day and promotes a better quality of sleep.

9. Don’t eat after 7pm. Eating dinner or snacking late can interrupt or cause poor sleep and also promotes weight gain.

10. Finally, ensure that you get adequate sleep. Discontinue all electronics (watching TV, computer work, surfing the internet) at least one hour before bed. The blue light from these devices interferes with melatonin release, interrupting normal sleep patterns. Additionally, the stimulatory nature of work or play on electronic devices can promote wakefulness and interrupt dreamtime.

Undergraduate: Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from

University of Lethbridge

Natural medicine touched my life for the first time when I was

13. I had an allergic reaction and the medications conventional

doctors gave me only treated the symptoms. My mother took

me to an ND who quickly determined the cause of my allergic

reaction. This experience was the first of many that led me to ND

school.

I studied pre-med and worked in diagnostic imaging with the

goal of being a doctor. I noticed that the health care provided

was excellent but seemed to be more reactive than proactive. My

work in health care and my family’s experiences with conventional

medication made me reconsider MD school.

I knew what kind of doctor I wanted to be but couldn’t visualize

my path. When my mother mentioned naturopathic medicine,

my future became clear.

Arizona’s broad scope of practice and SCNM’s systems-based

and team-learning education sold me on SCNM. I felt like I’d be

able to learn and practice all modalities.

There are so many opportunities to explore after I graduate. One

day, I will return to Canada to open my own practice.

nadia RomeroLethbridge, Alberta, Canada 2nd year medical student

Undergraduate: B.A. in Individualized Studies from Dordt College.

As a nurse, I saw a lot of patients suffering from chronic disease

who were frustrated with their course of treatment. On a personal

level, when my son was born with Down syndrome, I didn’t

receive much assistance on how to prepare for the health issues

he would face as her grew older. Conventional medicine could

offer very little in the way of building his strength. This treatment

“gap” spurred my interest in naturopathic medicine.

To me, becoming a naturopathic doctor means recognizing

people’s unlimited potential and helping them be the best they

can be. I believe naturopathic medicine can help people live life

to the fullest and this is why I plan on opening a family practice

after I graduate.
