His 4-year-old daughter Barbara sat on his lap quietly sobbing. Bob’s wife, Evelyn, was dying of cancer Little Barbara couldn’t understand why her mommy could never come home. Barbara looked up into her dad’s eyes and asked, “Why isn’t Mommy just like everybody else’s Mommy?” Bob’s jaw tightened and his eyes welled with tears. Her question brought waves of grief, but also of anger. It had been the story of Bob’s life. Life always had to be different for Bob. Small when he was a kid, Bob was often bullied by other boys. He was too little at the time to compete in sports. He was often called names he’d rather not remember. From childhood, Bob was different and never seemed to fit in. Bob did complete college, married his loving wife and was grateful to get his job as a copywriter at Montgomery Ward during the Great Depression. Then he was blessed with his little girl. But it was all short-lived. Evelyn’s bout with cancer stripped them of all their savings and now Bob and his daughter were forced to live in a two-room apartment in the Chicago slums. Evelyn died just days before Christmas in 1938. Bob struggled to give hope to his child, for whom he couldn’t even afford to buy a Christmas gift. But if he couldn’t buy a gift, he was determined to make one - a storybook! Bob had created an animal

MERRY CHRISTMAS

San Diego home prices have increased by 78 percent over the past year according to SampP Case-Schiller who tracks this type of information for the real estate industry

Of the entire United States San Diego had the third highest annual home price increase in the nation something we have not seen here since 2014

Only Seattle and Las Vegas had large increases increases when compared to 20 other major metropolitan areas across the USA

During 2015 and 2016 San Diego County had remained in approximately 10th place compared to other major cities that are a part of the rsquo20-citiesrsquo index making this spike in prices noteworthy

San Diegorsquos 2017 price increases outpaced the nationwide gain of 61 percent-as well cities throughout the state of California

It is worth noting that other cities that were at the top of the list in terms of annual price increases are finally leveling offrsquo after month after month of price increases

San Diego has been moving upwards on the index for a number of consecutive months

Of all 20 cities that are tracked on the index Seattle had the biggest yearly increase at 132 percent with Las Vegas in the 2 position at 86 percent

Both Los Angeles and San Francisco has price increases at just over 6

The lowest price increases were in Chicago at 37 percent and Washington DC at 34 percent

character in his own mind and told the animalrsquos story to little Barbara to give her comfort and hope Again and again Bob told the story embellishing it more with each telling Who was the character What was the story all about The story Bob May created was his own autobiography in fable form The character he created was a misfit outcast like he was The name of the character A little reindeer named Rudolph with a big shiny nose Bob finished the book just in time to give it to his little girl on Christmas Day But the story doesnrsquot end there

The general manager of Montgomery Ward caught wind of the little storybook and offered Bob May a nominal fee to purchase the rights to print the book Wards went on to print Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer_ and distribute it to children visiting Santa Claus in their stores By 1946 Wards had printed and distributed more than six million copies of Rudolph That same year a major publisher wanted to purchase the rights from Wards to print an updated version of the book

In an unprecedented gesture of kindness the CEO of Wards returned all rights back to Bob May The book became a best seller Many toy and marketing deals followed and Bob May now remarried with a growing family became wealthy from the story he created to comfort his grieving daughter But the story doesnrsquot end there either

Bobrsquos brother-in-law Johnny Marks made a song adaptation to Rudolph Though the song was turned down by such popular vocalists as Bing Crosby and Dinah Shore it was recorded by the singing cowboy Gene Autry ldquoRudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeerrdquo was released in 1949 and became a phenomenal success selling more records than any other Christmas song with the exception of ldquoWhite Christmasrdquo

The gift of love that Bob May created for his daughter so long ago kept on returning back to bless him again and again And Bob May learned the lesson just like his dear friend Rudolph that being different isnrsquot so bad In fact

San Diego Home Prices Continue to Set Records

Some parents choose not to save for their children to go to college because they (erroneously) believe a robust savings will hinder their ability to get financial aid

The Fix ndash The truth is that itrsquos primarily what yoursquore earning ndash not saving ndash that colleges take into consideration when granting financial aid so save away

Mistake 3 ndash Setting and forgetting it

Everyonersquos financial situation changes over time as do tax laws and investment options But too many people set up savings plans once and never revisit them

The Fix ndash Itrsquos important to review your investments on a regular basis and thatrsquos especially true if your goals are in the shorter term College investments that get more conservative over time are preferable as they reduce risk as the child gets closer to college age

College Savings Errors to AvoidSaving for your kidsrsquo college education can be confusing but it doesnrsquot have to be a daunting task Learning the best ways to save can help you avoid costly mistakes ndash and increase your yield

Mistake 1 ndash Choosing a plain old savings account

When yoursquore concerned about losing money on an investment a standard savings account might feel safer The interest on that account however wonrsquot even keep up with inflation let alone the rapidly rising cost of college

The Fix ndash If an aggressive investment isnrsquot right for you at least choose a 529 plan specifically designed for college expenses Money in a 529 plan grows tax-free until your child uses it to pay for school And if yoursquore lucky enough to get lots of grants and scholarships you can transfer a 529 to another child

Mistake 2 ndash Believing savings count against you

According to CoreLogic the median home price in San Diego County was $535000

Itrsquos common wisdom that staying fit is a good idea but physical health can sometimes come at a hefty price Here are some tips to help you stay both physically and fiscally fit at the same time

Worth the Splurge

Shoes Cheap or ill-fitting shoes can cause long-term damage to your feet legs and back negating any up-front savings

Sports Bras Especially for larger-chested women a good sports bra can prevent chafing and back pain

Personal Trainers and Nutritionists One-on-one time with a pro can be the motivation you need to work toward your goals

Save on These Things

Most Workout Clothing Inexpensive athletic tank tops and tees abound at discount retailers and donrsquot overlook the gently used options at Goodwill or other thrift stores

Fitness Trackers Chances are these offer many more features than you truly need There are plenty of free smartphone apps that track calories miles run and even provide free fitness classes

Exercise Saving vs Splurging

Pattern Reset ndash

Forcing your brain to focus on something else such as the repetitive task of doing dishes or knitting can help get your mind off whateverrsquos bothering you

Go for a Walk ndash

Not only will a 10-minute walk physically remove you from any stressful situation the exercise releases stress-relieving endorphins in your brain Dancing to your favorite song works too

Take an e-Break ndash

We love technology but it can also cause a huge amount of stress Turn off your phone or computer to increase your ability to relax and donrsquot leave your email inbox open all day

Have a Snack ndash

Itrsquos important to be mindful about snacking (stress eating is nobodyrsquos friend) but some nibbles can be helpful Potassium can help modulate blood pressure which can in turn reduce stress levels so have a banana Something like a handful of nuts offers a satisfying crunch and the energy your brain needs to get past the stress

How to Stop Procrastinating

Looking for some great cookies for the holidays

4 Perfect is the Enemy of Done ndash Keep in mind that if yoursquore only striving for perfection yoursquore less likely to even start a project

5 Reward Yourself ndash Give yourself a pat on the back for getting stuff done whether the reward is a night out or simply a favorite treat

Procrastinating is a learned behavior The good news is that it can be combated as long as yoursquore focused on how to prevent it Here are 5 steps to help you stop procrastinating and get in gear

1 Get Rid of Distractions ndash Turn off the phone shut the door put on headphones whatever it takes to drown out tempting diversions

2 Break Tasks Into Chunks ndash Things like ldquowash dishes do laundry and vacuumrdquo are more specific and chances are yoursquoll be more apt to tackle those tasks than the gargantuan-sounding ldquoclean the houserdquo

3 Do Your Hardest Task First ndash The sense of accomplishment when you complete the biggest item on your list first will help propel you forward toward crossing off more things on your list

A Yes In fact one out of four first-time homebuyers uses a gift to make the down payment

Tax law allows gifts of up to $14000 a year without tax consequences to the giver or recipient (The amount may be adjusted annually so check IRS publication 950 for the current figure) You could get a gift from two parents or two friends (for $28000) without paying a gift tax

Using a gift for a down payment allows you to buy the home even if itrsquos not Federal Housing Administration (FHA)-approved The best advice is to contact a well-connected REALTORreg and discuss this subject before you start looking for homes

being different can be a blessing

Please contact me anytime if you have any questions about our market-or if I can help you to strategize and take advantage of certain opportunities that are out there

Fashion Subscription WebsitesTwo of the most popular clothing subscription services online are Stitch Fix and Trunk Club Herersquos a brief overview of each

wwwstitchfixcom ndash For a $20 styling fee yoursquoll get a box with five items chosen for you by a stylist The $20 fee can be applied to anything you purchase from the box Send back whatever you donrsquot want and get a 25 discount if you keep everything

wwwtrunkclubcom ndash Unlike Stitch Fix Trunk Club has boxes for both men and women Therersquos no styling fee and you receive 12-15 items per box on average Therersquos no discount for buying everything and items tend to cost a bit more overall than Stitch Fix

A simple hinge on one side of a picture frame will hide the ugly thermostat on your wall yet keep it easy enough to access when you need it

Building a three-walled box to look like a row of books can hide your router and modem on a shelf

Did you know I can help you or any of your friends or family save time and money when buying or selling a home Thanks for keeping me in mind with your referralshellipand spreading the word about my services
