1 in 3 women worldwide will be affected by domestic violence at some point in their lives

(UNIFEM 2003 WHO 2013)

Violence against women is the leading cause of illness and injury to women aged 16-45 worldwide greater than motor accidents malaria cancer or war

(World Bank 1994)

38 of murders committed against women are committed by an intimate partner

(WHO 2013)

133 million children across the world will witness domestic violence in their homes which creates a cycle of continuing violence damaging families and communities

(UNICEF 2006)

Women who experience violence are twice as likely to have alcohol-related problems

(WHO 2013)

Efforts to escape violent households can lead to the loss of livelihoods children homes and access to healthcare

The issue of domestic and sexual violence is particularly relevant in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Great Lakes region of Africa Peace One Dayrsquos focus between 2014 and 2016 is a major campaign in the DRC and the Great Lakes region of Africa (focusing on Burundi Rwanda Uganda and Tanzania) made possible by the Howard G Buffett Foundation The campaign seeks to engage with all sectors of society in the region encouraging all parties and coalitions to stand together in the name of peace so that a significant level of non-violence and ceasefire (in conflict-affected areas) can be achieved on Peace Day by 2016 at the latest

Peace Day 21 September offers an ideal opportunity to address issues surrounding domestic violence which too frequently go unreported The following toolkit is a guide to help your organisations create events and workshops to tackle domestic violence which will in turn continue to strengthen the lsquoReducing Domestic Violencersquo Coalition

A workshop empowers people to participate in Peace Day ndash and make a contribution to raising awareness of domestic violence and the impact this often silent epidemic has throughout the world The overall aim will be to ensure participants take 3 key lessons and 3 key actions forward to help eliminate domestic violence and to bring peace to their communities

A workshop event is an excellent way to raise awareness of domestic violence issues and offer solutions among groups of between 10 and 30 individuals Examples of workshop ideas include a training event for other organisations an educational event at a school or university a networking event for local businesses or a social action event as part of a larger community assistance programme Events like this are also a great way to bring together people from various ethnic and religious backgrounds which is a key objective of Peace One Day

A workshop should be an interactive event and you should select a session leader (ldquofacilitatorrdquo) with an eye to this The facilitator must be capable of keeping a session on track while also allowing space for discussion and questions It is therefore important that the facilitator be familiar with facts about domestic violence and ideally should be experienced in the sector It is critical that the facilitator understand what you aim to get out of the workshop and how you will measure results If you have no one in your organisation who meets these criteria consider contacting other members of the lsquoReducing Domestic Violencersquo Coalition in your area for potential session leaders

A workshop event can take a number of different directions from a professional training session to an informal group sharing stories During the planning session decide with your session leader and any assistants on the format you will take and ensure that your invitees are aware in good time ndash this will allow them to prepare adequately and stimulate discussion during the session We recommend you consider visual aids a presentation outlining your aims and deliverables and a presentation on how you will measure impact These will all help engage those attending your workshop If you are looking to train businesses on how to recognise DV in the workplace and its impact we highly recommend you contact The Corporate Alliance Against Domestic Violence (wwwcaadvorguk)

WORKSHOP An example schedule for an hour-long informal workshop might look like the following

This is a fairly simple framework for a basic event but gives a general idea of how a workshop should go ndash introductions including details on confidentiality (very important when discussing DV issues) overview of the event from the facilitator and assistants (so that there is definite content within the workshop) encouraging audience contribution and questions it is helpful to have an interactive session based around audience questions and case studies providing direct advice and lessons learned conclusion of the event which includes directions to further resources

The scale of domestic violenceGlobally it is shocking how many people are affected in their lifetime both by experiencing domestic violence directly and bearing witness to it A factsheet of international statistics is included with this toolkit ndash comparing the international rate with the rates in your own nation (usually recorded by your national statistics department) can be an interesting avenue for discussion

What is domestic violenceIt is important to observe that DV includes a number of crimes other than physical assault including psychological abuse FGM honour crimes sexual assault from a current or former partner and financial abuse

Who is affected by domestic violenceEDV Global Foundation notes that domestic violence occurs ldquoregardless of age race gender sexual orientation religion economic or employment status education or ethnicityrdquo It is an issue that can affect anyone and therefore should be the concern of everyone

How can you tell if someone is suffering from domestic violenceOften victims of DV are unwilling to come forward to accuse their abuser for a variety of reasons Therefore it is necessary for the community -including friends family employers healthcare professionals and law enforcement agencies - to be able to recognise the signs that domestic violence ismay be occurring and to take the appropriate ndash discreet ndash steps to help the victim or stop the perpetrator Ask the audience for any suggestions they have on these topics Again we recommend you liaise with CAADV if this is part of the work you will undertake in your workshop

SAMPLE TALKING POINTS DISCRETION AND CONFIDENTIALITY - GUIDELINES

Remember that discussions about domestic violence can involve talking about issues that can be emotionally hard or that involve the disclosure of criminal acts In order to make the workshop a successful and safe environment the lsquoReducing Domestic Violencersquo Coalition recommends the following guidelines for organisers and your audience

bull Indicate to your attendees that this is a highly emotive topic You know that people in the room will be or have been impacted by domestic violence ndash perhaps they have witnessed or known someone who has experienced this silent epidemic It is a good idea to underline that there is no shame in this and that if something strikes a chord with person they can feel free to share with their fellow attendees or perhaps speak with the facilitator after the session

bull If you wish to record your workshop (video or audio) ensure that everyone present is aware and has consented to be recorded You may be required to have a formal letter of consent to record your session You may consider not recording any part of the session which is primarily based around audience participation Simple consent form templates are included in the toolkit resources ndash we strongly recommend that you request attendees sign a form if you intend to use the recorded session as a publicly available resource

bull As part of the initial address from the session leader cover discretion issues such as

bull In cases of disclosure of endurance or perpetration listen actively to their concerns and stories Impress on the attendees the bravery of the person who spoke and that this is a time of trust We recommend that you speak with the person post the event or at a time mutually beneficial and direct the discloser to an appropriate local support service It is critical that you have these resources to hand and research the appropriate resources to signpost to Research these beforehand as part of the initial preparation

ldquoAll personal stories are to remain confidential without express permissionrdquo

ldquoResponses from the audience may be used anonymously for feedback and improvement of the service provided by [organiser name]rdquo

ldquoThis is a non-judgmental environmentrdquo

0-10 mins

Welcome introductions describe the format of the session remind attendees that personal stories must be held in confidence

10-30 mins

Primary address from the session leader including for example facts about domestic violence case studies (personal or otherwise) how working with organisations such as Peace One Day and EDV creates change and best practice and how they can take action to address DV in their community Encourage questions throughout

30-50 mins

Question and answer session encourage workshop attendees to share their own personal experiences and the lessons they learned from them

50-60 mins

Conclude with a brief Q and A session then summarise conclusions and what actions attendees will be taking Draw the attention of attendees to useful resources available locally and nationally including help lines shelters and NGOs in the local area

PUBLICITY

Many other members of the lsquoReducing Domestic Violencersquo Coalition will be putting on similar events on Peace Day Your workshop will therefore also be a part of a much larger awareness -raising campaign across the world on or around Peace Day and we recommend you use this fact as you advertise your workshop to potential attendees

In the pack you will find links to the Peace One Day website Resource page where you can access several flyers and one-page posters about Peace One Day and the lsquoReducing Domestic Violencersquo Coalition We would also like to know what you are planning ndash there is a brief questionnaire on the Peace One Day website httppeaceonedayorgpeace-day-2013-plans-form

Reach out through social media - Facebook and Google+ events are an easy way to provide updates to those you have invited Make sure you deliver regular updates to maintain interest either through social media or group email

Set Aims and Objectives1 Will your event be focused on introductory training raising awareness or gaining support

2 Who is your target audience Businesses schools universities a local neighbourhood faith groups youth clubs etc

3 How many guests will you invite Workshops tend to be less effective beyond thirty-forty attendees

4 Choose a suitable individual to lead your workshop

5 What do you want attendees to get out of the event

Where and When1 Choose a suitable location A hall which can comfortably seat the maximum number of invited guests

is recommended ndash depending on the objectives of the workshop you may wish to arrange seating by rows or in a circle Ensure that a location you choose will have adequate seating Take time to consider the best venue You may wish to consider a venue that is easily accessible to as many people as possible including those with reduced mobility but it may also be appropriate to consider a venue that will help to maintain the confidentiality of those attending Some potential attendees may be put off if the venue is somewhere that will make it obvious to friends family members and others in their community that they are attending a seminar on DV

2 Peace Day (21 September) falls on a Saturday this year and may well be an appropriate day to get the maximum possible availability However any date close to the day (19-22 September) helps us increase the global awareness of Peace Day

3 Communicate location and time early and often Whenever you communicate with your potential guests remind them of the date

Publicise1 Reach out to your target audience Use social media emails and personal contact Encourage everyone to

spread the word and to join the lsquoReducing Domestic Violencersquo Coalition

2 Establish event groups on Facebook and Google + or create a lsquohashtagrsquo for Twitter communication

CONFERENCE

A domestic violence conference or seminar is a great way to bring together large numbers of individuals to share knowledge and experience Since ensuring that knowledge our members have gained is shared is one of the key aims of the lsquoReducing Domestic Violencersquo Coalition this toolkit will provide you with a list of the planning tasks to allow you to put on a successful conference

Conferences should be structured For a medium sized event (50-100) people a dayrsquos event might have two sessions of two hours two speakers in

each with an hourrsquos break for lunch and networking between You will need a large hall (preferably with multimedia facilities like projectors or microphones) four speakers (delivering presentations of around 40 minutes with 20 minutes for questions) and a chair to introduce the speakers and keep to time constraints Creating agendas ahead of time and distributing them to your invited guests can help build interest and stimulate discussion during the question and answer phase An example of a successful event from last year can be found at httpwww womenlobbyorgspipphparticle3818

Suitable speakers at the conference will depend on the aims and objectives you set ndash however it is a good idea to include a range of topics Sample ideas for talks might include ldquoDomestic Violence ndash What can friends and family dordquo ldquoThe Effects of Domestic Violence in the Work Placerdquo ldquoPeace One Day and Violence in the Homerdquo ldquoRefugees ndash Creating A Safe Environmentrdquo or ldquoWhat is Domestic Violencerdquo ldquoPeace Day in the Work Place ndash how Domestic Violence impacts businessrdquo

If you do not have a sufficiently broad range of experience within your organisation reach out to specialist NGOs government departments or university faculties (sometimes Medical and Psychology academics may have great points to make on the subject of domestic violence) Other members of the lsquoReducing Domestic Violencersquo Coalition in your area may be able to help Once a speaker has expressed interest in participating send them a form that allows them to state their requirements (if any) for transport accommodation multimedia equipment volunteers as well as the title and brief summary of their planned presentation A sample form is available to download with the toolkit resources
