    Carraignamweel House Co Wicklow, Ireland

    1999 - 2001

The existence of a natural spring hasmeant that there has been a succession ofhouses on this site since at least 1847. Theremains of many of these were scatteredacross the site.A new wing has been added to therenovated existing house, which formsa protected courtyard with the steepembankment to the south completingthe enclosure. The walls to the new wing

are constructed exclusively with stonesgathered from the site. Particular care wastaken to f rame views of the landscape withwindow joinery made of oiled Iroko. Thesewindows are protected by a series of thezinc-clad canopies. The house is entered directly into a dayroom which has large sliding doors onto

the courtyard to the south, and to a cov-ered timber deck to the northwest. In thisway the activities of the day can capitalizeon the available sunlight. The existing cottage contains an eveningroom which focuses on the chimney-breast and the kitchen. Here the ceilingis clad in painted T&G boarding. Theaccommodation is completed by threebedrooms and a study with a concealed

and protected timber-decked garden to thewest. A stone oor is common throughoutthe house. Unpainted render completes thepalate of external materials. The court-yard has a gravel oor and a wild- owermeadow has been planted on the rest ofthe site.

    Ailesbury Road House (Extension)

Like many late nineteen century houses, this house on Ailesbury Road was or-ganised with the main reception ro omsof the house facing the road. The brieffor the new extension was to open thehouse to the rear, draw in afternoonand evening light and thereby allow forgreater enjoyment of the extensive reargarden. To maximise afternoon light a glassroom projects into t he garden to cre-ate a long west facing side faade. An

external stainless steel skeleton witha louvered canopy roof and electronicexternal vertical blinds addressed threeparticular concerns of the client withthe initial glass box proposal: they want-ed to deny the view from upper floor

windows of the flat roof, they wantedto control excessive glare & solar gain, and they want some control of potentialoverlooking from theneighbouring house. The external framealso expands the scale of the modestroom programme to respond to the scaleof the garden. The back wall of the new room has apronounced thickness. Clad in glazedbricks; this thickness is manipulated toedit views and morning light, as well as

containing t he storage requirements ofthe space. The internal floor is completed in terraz-zo. External polished paving slabs werecustom made wit h matching aggregate.
