The Internet, and many larger private Internet Protocol

(IP) networks, rely on the Domain Name System (DNS) to help

direct traffic.

The DNS maintains a distributed database of network names

and addresses, and it provides methods for computers to

remotely query the database. Some people call DNS the

"phone book of the Internet.“

A network server that translates “names” into IP Address.

A domain name is the unique web address that you

type in web browser’s, address bar in Firefox, Google

Chrome or Opera and any browser’s to visit a web site.

An examples of domain name is :

www.yahoo.in

www.facebook.com

www.maharashtra.go.in

Since 1998, Domain Extensions or Top Level Domains (TLDs) help to structure

the internet. There’s a lot of TLD choices - close to 300 and growing.
