Jules Chevalier DinnerOn the evening of 25 March 2017, the Monivae College Foundation hosted the inaugural ‘Jules Chevalier Dinner’ at the Chevalier Wellbeing Centre which now forms an important hub for the College community. The purpose of the dinner was to thank all who had generously contributed to the Foundation since it was first established in 1998.The evening was a huge success with over 60 past students and friends of the College attending. A highlight was Tony Wright’s (Class of 1969) interview with Alex Tseng (Class of 1969) in which he recalled his journey from Shanghai to Monivae in 1966 and his pathway to a successful business career in hospitality since leaving the College in 1969.Alex continues to be a most generous benefactor to the Foundation.

Swimming pool – enclosed and heatedAfter 33 years, the College pool has finally been enclosed and heated. It is a truly amazing transformation. Officially opened in March 2017, it has perhaps seen more use in the first four weeks of the year than the past 33 years. At a cost of over $1 million this project was primarily funded by the Foundation and only made possible through the generosity of a passionate Old Collegian. Current Foundation ProjectsA number of past students have enquired about the current projects for which the Foundation is seeking assistance.

In summary they are: Project 1A: The Monivae Cricket Academy (MCA). A regional cricket hub for South West Victoria.Project 1B: Chevalier Centre Completion – redevelopment of the Performing Arts Centre.Bursary and Scholarship Endowment FundsThe Foundation has set a goal to establish - by 2020, - Bursary and Scholarship Endowment Funds of $5 million to assist the College in funding of:• Bursaries (financial support for

students/families in need) and;• Scholarships (merit based financial

assistance).

Director AppointmentsWe are delighted to advise that Mr Hugh Delahunty (Class of 1967) has recently joined the Board of the Foundation. We are certain that Hugh’s distinguished career as a politician and his extensive networks will assist the Foundation in meeting its objectives over the coming years.Should you require any further details on the Monivae College Foundation, please do not hesitate to contact the Director of Development, Jill Whiting Ph: (03) 5551 1251 or [email protected]

Laurie Cogger Chairman Monivae College Foundation (Class of 1973)

As educators, we witness extraordinary examples of commitment and generosity. This is evidenced through our Alumni, Parents and Friends, Foundation, Board, Teachers and school community. It is also a privilege to work with young men and women from years 7 to 12 as we guide their heads and their hearts in all that they do. Central to our mission is realising every student’s unique potential and we want our students to graduate as lifelong learners who are competent, confident and compassionate. The people in this Dolphin provide strong examples of Mind, Spirit and Heart. Our class of 2016 achieved some excellent results with our Dux Catherine Chincarini achieving an ATAR of 97.25 and 59% of students achieving an ATAR score above 60. Along with their academic achievements we aim to provide the ‘Monivae Graduate’ with the skills necessary for life. Cadets have completed the challenging week long Cadet Camp, students have recently returned from their Kiribati Mission Experience and the year 11 cohort shone at the Presentation Ball. Monivae has recently signed on to be a Lead School for the Respectful Relationships Program: a MSC community that is dynamic and joy filled, providing every opportunity to develop in all aspects of life.I wish to particularly acknowledge Mr Alex Tseng and his generous contribution towards the Chevalier pool. Father Peter Hendriks, at the Chevalier dinner, commented on the effect his generosity would have on the countless numbers of students who are fortunate enough to use this wonderful facility. The ripple effect of this act of kindness is immeasurable. Currently the Chapel is receiving a makeover with large floor to ceiling glass doors and new plaster work throughout. Watch this space for pictures of the completed work.I do hope you enjoy this edition of the Dolphin.Jonathan Rowe Deputy Principal

MSC in action & CadetsEvery second Friday afternoon at Monivae, two successful programs that have been giving students valuable life skills beyond the classroom are; the ‘MSC in Action’ and the ‘Cadet’ Programs.

Year 7 and 8 students look forward to ‘MSC in Action’ afternoons which can include community activities such as spending time with the elderly at Eventide Lutheran Home, participating in helping the community with garden projects and a variety of volunteering projects.

All of the Year 9 and 10 students and students from year 11 and 12 who chose to continue with Cadets, take part in the Cadet program. This very important program introducing students to a range of activities is designed to give the students confidence, self-esteem, self-reliance, endurance and responsibility. The Cadet camps and formal Cadet parade are very important dates of the calendar each year.

2016 DUX Catherine Chincarini

I started Year 7 in Horsham and wasn’t enjoying my schooling and the travel times due to living on a farm were also an issue. Then I discovered Monivae, a school that would give a top quality education while still enabling me to be relatively close to my family, although weekly boarding would be a necessity. My family were not able to afford to send me to Monivae without some kind of financial assistance, having two younger brothers that also needed to be put through primary and secondary school. I pursued scholarships at Monivae, and was lucky enough to receive the General Excellence Scholarship, granting me 50% off my school fees for Year 8-10. This scholarship therefore enabled me to enrol and attend Monivae in 2012 as a Year 8 student. I reapplied and once again received the General Excellence Scholarship in Year 10, allowing me to finish my schooling at Monivae.

Without this scholarship, I would never have had the opportunities Monivae has given me, particularly in extra-curricular areas and the performing arts, as well as the range of subjects on offer. The teachers I had were very dedicated and accessible, and have really made an impact on my life. Boarding was a great experience also, making close friends, and the compulsory study time and access to study facilities, while some nights was hard to get through, in the long run really made a difference in my

marks. I would never have had that sort of set time at home without distractions and interruptions. I have participated in and achieved things I never would have at home, and the epitome of the opportunity my scholarship gave me would be my achievement in becoming Dux of Monivae College for 2016, a dream come true and an example of what a Monivae scholarship can lead to. I was always grateful for the opportunity to attend the college, and therefore I always worked hard to prove my dedication and thankfulness.

I have recently been accepted into the Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne, where I will major in Media and Communications, a degree that will lead to either journalism or law at a graduate level, depending on what I decide when I am completing my undergraduate degree. I was also accepted into residency at Newman College, which I am very excited for and I am sure my time as a boarder at Monivae has amply prepared me for community style living.

MOCA ReportIt is almost reunion time, always a great chance to return to Monivae to see how the school has evolved. Those attending their thirty year reunion this year will notice the changes to the sports centre and pool, opened during their first years at Monivae.

Back then, the prospect of the new complex made for exciting times. Everyone got involved in the fundraising including a car raffle and a walkathon from Monivae to Tarrington. Some of my classmates, then Year 10 boarders, spent Saturday afternoons nailing floorboards. The following year they danced on the same floorboards at our Deb Ball, the first held in the centre.

As for the pool, construction was during the 1980s drought and with water restrictions in place; it looked as though the pool would remain empty until the drought broke. Finally, water was sourced from the Grange Burn to fill the pool.

Thirty-four years on and the sports centre and pool have been transformed and are part of the Chevalier Centre. Earlier this year, the now fully enclosed Chevalier Pool was officially opened. The benefactor for the improvements was old collegian, Alex Tseng a generous supporter of Monivae through the years. His latest contribution is a wonderful acquisition for Monivae.

Finally, please keep old collegian Jason O’Connor (1986) and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Jason, with other employees of Crown Casino, was detained in Shanghai, China last October and an outcome could still be some time away. We hope some positive news comes soon for his family.

Chevalier Pool Opening

The new Chevalier Pool was opened on Friday 24th March to great excitement from the entire school. A special assembly involving all of the students and the invited guests commenced with Fr John Mulrooney MSC and Principal Mark McGinnity, officiating the proceedings. The official blessing of the pool was watched by all via live streaming to the College’s large screens in our Chevalier East stadium.

The students and guests gave a simultaneous sigh when Old Collegian Alex Tseng, Fr John Mulrooney and Principal, Mark McGinnity unveiled, the large sign featuring three words; “Passion, Persistence and Hospitality:” These three words are the most valued ideals of Alex Tseng class of 1969. These words stand out prominently at the end of our Chevalier pool for all who are lucky enough to use this wonderful, new facility.

Jules Chevalier Dinner and Poolside BlessingChevalier Pool celebrations continued on Saturday 25th March with the Jules Chevalier Dinner to coincide with the opening of the Chevalier Pool. The Monivae College Foundation celebrated with many Old Collegians and benefactors of the College at the Jules Chevalier Dinner. This special evening was one of recognition for the many benefactors and to thank the College’s generous long-time supporter, Mr Alex Tseng. The completion of the Chevalier Pool Enclosure would not have been possible without the wonderful support from Alex Tseng.

Following canapés and drinks and a formal sit down dinner overlooking the Chevalier pool, Old Collegian Tony Wright interviewed Alex Tseng. This was a very entertaining insight to Alex’s life whilst he was at Monivae and the success of his careers that has followed. Since arriving from Hong Kong as a boy, Alex’s strong connection with Monivae is still very evident and below are some snippets of the interview with Tony Wright.

TONY: Your purchased a ticket (to Australia) from Hong Kong and you went third class to save money. I understand that the weather was bad, and that you had a bit of trouble.ALEX: Third class isn’t that nice, every time the waves come, you just go up and down, up and down, so everyone gets sick in third class except me because I can well look after myself. From that trip I actually met some nice people.TONY: In the mean time you were made late, and so you got off the ship.ALEX: Yes - because the weather was so bad it had been delayed for so long - we eventually arrived in Brisbane, and the only time left was 2 or 3 days and then my visa would expire.TONY: You then got a train from Brisbane to Sydney and then onto Melbourne.ALEX: From Melbourne I was supposed to go straight to Hamilton. But on Sunday there was no train to Ballarat and no train to Hamilton - so you have to go by coach.TONY: On arriving to Hamilton you were welcomed by the well-known Fr Prentice. Do you remember the words he said at the time?ALEX: The bus driver dropped me outside Monivae on Ballarat Road. It was pouring rain, and I was wet walking in the driveway - I was like a wet duck. I knocked on the door and rang the bell - Father Prentice came out - with his hand on his tummy and he didn’t say “hello Alex” - he just said, “you are late Alex!”. I looked at him and said “I’m cold,

wet and hungry”. Fr Prentice took me into the kitchen and organised food for me.TONY: That was your beginning at Monivae and thinking about it - there you were and you decided not to go back to Hong Kong for a year.ALEX: My father used to be well off, but he grew up in a communist country and he lost everything (in China). So at that time he was only earning a wage, and he was supporting me in Australia, and two of my siblings who were studying in New York. So I decided at Christmas time I would get a part time job and work.TONY: You became an entrepreneur very quickly and no one know about it.ALEX: I needed a student ticket to Sydney to visit my friends. “They had said, if you are ever in Sydney, give us a ring” and I said “Can you give me a job?”. “Yes no problem, you come up and we will get you a job” - the best job for more money is to work in a Chinese garden.TONY: You obviously were a very independent young man. At that time, you didn’t speak English that well - you were relatively shy - but you still won a public speaking competition.ALEX: Yes, I wrote it and corrected it and for 6 months behind the Science Block I stood behind the wall and Brian Boyle helped me and made me say the speech slowly for months.TONY: With what you’ve done here at Monivae, you told me today you wanted

to give back because the school had given you so much. What would be the main thing that you truly feel that Monivae gave you?ALEX: Well, the priests were very, very, good to me - especially Fr Tyler. He gave me special English lessons after school. He would ask me to say ABC, one syllable at a time- in front of his office desk.TONY: By the end of it you wanted to go to University - or your father wanted you to go to University - but things didn’t quite work out.ALEX: Well - I failed Matriculation - I was thinking of going back to Monivae to receive my Matriculation.TONY: I guess in many ways - because we all face the influences of our lives through our childhood, adolescence and youth, this is your other home - your second home, in fact, almost home, after leaving your parents at the age of 17.ALEX: Occasionally I would go to friend’s places for long weekends, but most of the time I wanted to stay here because my English was not good, and I wanted to study as hard I can to try and improve it.TONY: In some ways you are rebuilding the harbour of your youth here.ALEX: That’s true - I just feel to give back it is a pleasure - it gives me a lot of pleasure. The thing is - I like it when I do charity work - it gives me great satisfaction.

The tradition of the Monivae Presentation Ball continues with this year’s ‘Moonlight Garden’ a truly dazzling affair. The Parents and Friends Ball Committee worked tirelessly in preparing a backdrop of elegance and flair. A wall of enormous hand painted flowers and a fairy lights adorned the Chevalier Centre, along with gardens, fountains and stars. 110 very stylish Year 11s arrived by horse drawn carriages, golf buggies,

vintage cars and motorbikes. The evening was one mixed with nerves and excitement, as the students awaited their turn to be presented to the official party consisting of Principal, Mr Mark McGinnity, Mrs Sue McGinnity, Major Mrs Maryanne Brown and Deputy Mayor, Mr Chris Sharples. Congratulations to the Parents and Friends for again hosting a wonderful evening for all involved.

Matt’s Appetite For Success

Matt Dempsey (class of 1997) is in a class all of his own when it comes to how to run a successful restaurant. Matt has been certainly making a name as a Restaurateur since his ‘Young Chef of the Year’ award in 2009.

As the Young Chef of the Year, Matt won an incredible experience of a trip to the UK to work alongside Brett Graham at the two Michelin star restaurant, ‘The Ledbury’, in London and Heston Blumenthal’s famous three Michelin star ‘Fat Duck’ in Bray, ‘Matt described the experience as “surreal” and said “even now I can’t believe the experiences I had. We travelled through Tuscany courtesy of San Pellegrino, had a classic Tuscan BBQ, visited Florence and participated in the cooking competition on a boat cruising the waterways of Venice.” Matt’s unique experience was an eye opener to how really hard they do work at the top!

“The Ledbury was insane: so intense” said Matt. “Start time was 7.30am and finishing time was about 12.30am with no break and crazy pressure all day. The Fat Duck was similar hours but a far more controlled pace with 2 x 45 minute breaks per day. The food there is still the best I’ve seen or eaten”, said Matt. Their dedication and professionalism of both restaurants show why they are leaders in the industry.

Since then Matt has been busy creating one success following another with his restaurants. In 2011, Matt and his wife Kate chose Inverleigh, 20 minutes west of Geelong to open their new venture, ‘Gladioli’. Gladioli has carved out a huge following and in 2013 was awarded Best New Regional Restaurant in the Age Good Food Awards. Other notable

accolades came from the Gourmet Traveller magazine ranking Gladioli #5 on its best regional restaurants and #55 in its 2015 Top 100 Best Australian, Restaurants. Matt’s genuine passion for the industry is so evident and asked what gives Matt his energy and enthusiasm, Matt answered, I love what I do, I guess that’s the simple answer. All jobs or careers present challenges, and It’s easy to get up and go to work when things are going well, but a genuine passion certainly helps.

In 2013 Matt’s enthusiasm and drive continued with the opening of the ‘Tulip Restaurant’ in Geelong, in partnership with fellow chef, Graham Jefferies. ‘Tulip’ features an all Victorian wine list and won its first hat in 2015. Matt described the experience of opening ‘Tulip’ as “Far better than I could ever have expected. It’s been an awesome three years”.

The latest dining experience that is making its mark in Port Fairy is Matt’s newest restaurant, ‘Conlan’s Wine Bar’. Conlan’s is described as “a historical gem, a cosy place to unwind and tell a story or two, alongside a retail store stocked with fine regional wines and homely goods”. If you have the opportunity, call in and visit one of Matt’s restaurants and experience for yourself the passion and love that goes into every plate and glass. It is an experience you will remember.

Lastly, Matt has some advice for aspiring young chefs, “Be prepared for lots of hard work, sacrifices and pain but if you are up to it, the pleasure and rewards far exceed the hard parts. Oh, and it’s not at all like what you see on reality TV!!”

Honours for Allan Myers AC QC Class of 1964.Allan Myers AC QC (Class of 1964) has been appointed the prestigious title of Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, succeeding incumbent Elizabeth Alexander. He has donated a reported $10 million to the University, where he graduated with a law degree in 1969 and is regarded as Australia’s most celebrated barrister, noted businessman, cattle baron and philanthropist.

Allan was awarded the nation’s highest civic honour last year for his support of the arts, higher education and medical research. Allan has also been the Chair of the Board for ‘Believe’ – the Campaign for the University of Melbourne since its inception in 2013.

“I am honoured to become Chancellor of the University with which I have had more than 50 Years association”, commented Allan. The Monivae community extend our congratulations to Allan on his esteemed appointment.

Katelan Eales, Jessica Monk and Lisa Shelly

Cadets highest honourThe Monivae Cadets Program offers the Adjutant and leaders of the Monivae Cadet Unit the opportunity to attend The National Adventure Training Award (NATA), held in Canberra. This is no walk over: it is an award that has to be earnt. Successful leaders aspire to gain the NATA Award the prominent gold badge featuring a boomerang and a torch. This prestigious award is the highest accolade you can receive on your cadet’s uniform and it is nationally recognised.

Katelan Eales, Jessica Monk and Lisa Shelly were three of 30 cadets selected from Victoria in a pre selection barrier test conducted over a weekend of rigorous and challenging tasks in Melbourne. This was the prelude to something not one of the 137 cadets from all over Australia could have been prepared for. The setting for the seven days was at Camp Blake and Mujura Military Training area. Cadets were separated into ‘Syndicates’ and the importance of working as a team soon became crucial. Katelan remarked. “Every day there was an urge to drop out, a point where you physically and mentally thought you were about to break. We endured hiking over 20 km a day with approximately 20 kg in our packs whilst completing a series of field activities. It tested our skills in engineering, navigating, survival and endurance.”

With little sleep each night and in freezing conditions, each day brought a new challenge. The leadership, confidence and teamwork they displayed getting them over the line with the sometimes unachievable challenges that were thrown their way. When asked what kept you going when it would have been easier to drop out, Katelan replied, “What stopped me was our Syndicate 7, we bonded so much over the seven days. “People from all over Australia who had never met each other, talked and worked together as if they had known each other their whole lives. “Participating in Cadets doesn’t only make you feel welcome, it’s a second family”. Monivae College congratulates Katelan, Jessica and Lisa for their outstanding achievements of all receiving the honour of wearing the NATA gold badge.
