DOING BUSINESS IN CANADAKEY INSIGHTS FOR EXPANSION
Canada is one of the top destinations for expanding
U.S. businesses.
It has a welcoming business environment,
strong growth record and a highly educated
workforce.
Combined with a low tax rate and financial stability, it is a tempting target for international expansion.
44% of the companies we asked were considering an expansion into Canada due to its predictable business environment.

At first glance, Canada is in many ways a familiar evironment for
U.S. businesses.
But be aware of some key differences …
There are minimum standards for employment and labor laws which
can vary by province.
Vacation pay should be accrued and reflected on payslips, and there is no ‘use it or lose it’ concept.
Minimum vacation time standard is 2 weeks, maximum is 4 weeks.
Both salaried and hourly employees are eligible for overtime, which applies in most provinces.
Certain provinces have both a daily and a weekly threshold application of overtime.
Although not mandatory, it is best practice to setup
an employment handbook to document HR, benefit
and leave policies.
Non-locally compliant employment contracts default to common or civil law
which in general requires one month notice period per year of service, with no concept of
'at-will' employment or 'garden leave'.
A corporation is needed in Canada to obtain a work permit, and an
employer may need to apply for an LMIA in order to hire foreign workers.
