Hamad International Airport
Qatar’s Hamad International Airport, a world-class facility planned to become one of the Middle East’s new aviation hubs and featuring the world’s largest free-span maintenance hangar, is the latest addition to Kingspan Insulated Panels LLC’s growing portfolio of projects in the region.
Constructed using the KingZip SF standing seam roofing system to
the highest safety standards, the hangar is capable of handling up
to 13 wide-body aircraft, including Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s*,
and will function as the central maintenance facility for the
fast-expanding fleet of Qatar Airways, the country’s national carrier.
Underlining the global collaborations that drive mega-developments
in the Middle East, Ghafari Associates (US-based architects),
Bechtel International (Consultants) and a consortium of four leading
contractors including Aktor (Greece), Darwish (Qatar), Chimolai
(Italy) and Cybarco PC (Cyprus), called ADCC, joined hands
for the project.
There were several design and construction considerations in
building the hangar, the key feature being its column-free design
to ensure flexible and easy aircraft parking. The roof structure was
crucial, as it had to ensure total protection in addition to being
thermally efficient, fire-resistant, and weatherproof, even under
extreme conditions during summer months.
“Kingspan Insulated Panels LLC’s capabilities were a perfect fit to our requirements, and together, we have achieved a remarkable milestone in the history of aviation infrastructure development in the region.”Constantinos Demetriades, Project Director, ADCC.
Offering the ultimate in design flexibility, KingZip SF Standing Seam
System is manufactured in aluminium and may also be available
in coated steel, stainless steel, zinc or copper. It can be supplied
smooth, embossed, crimp curved, concave or convex smooth
curved, tapered, wave formed or tapered and smooth curved.

Hamad International Airport
The impressive KingZip SF standing seam roof on Qatar’s airport
hangar spans across an impressive area of 98,000m2. It has a
three-coat Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) coating in Metallic Silver
(RAL 9006). KingZip SF sheets were used in a cover width of
400mm, the most popular in its portfolio, which comes in any width
between 240mm and 600mm.
The 400mm cover width offers the best combination between the
structural performance of the roof, good span, and its overall cost
and sustainability, as less aluminium per m2 is used compared to
the 300mm width.
KingZip SF can be manufactured on-site, allowing roofs to be
constructed using very long sheet lengths, eliminating the need for
any end laps and considerably increasing speed of construction.
At Hamad’s hangar, full-length sheets, 121 metres long, run from
ridge to eaves making water penetration practically impossible.
Web-perforated and polyester coated, 110/1000 structural decking
sheets were used to compliment the roof system, supporting the
acoustic and thermal insulation core.
Seamlessly integrated with the KingZip SF roof are the walls,
which were constructed using Kingspan Architectural Wall Panels
(AWP) in Flat profile, with 0.7 mm aluminium on the outer face.
The face panels are coated in a three-coat PVDF paint system in
Cream (RAL1015).
Kingspan Architectural Wall Panels are secret-fix insulated wall
panel systems that offer unprecedented freedom of design and
top-of-the-range performance to architects. The wide range of
profiles allows architects to look beyond traditional insulated panel
designs to create buildings with more inspiring façades within
the same cost parameters. The panels are manufactured with
Kingspan’s unique ECOsafe and FIREsafe PIR insulation core,
that provides excellent performance in terms of sustainability,
thermal efficiency, fire safety and structural integrity.
Pre-engineered single components with single-fix installation, the
AWP panels can be quickly and easily installed, reducing site time
by up to 50%. They can also reduce steelwork requirements and
are environmentally sustainable. The energy-efficient performance
reduces plant and lifetime operating costs, and carbon dioxide
emissions by up to 40%.
The maintenance hangar at Hamad International Airport is now
the benchmark in the region for advanced, safe, and durable
roofing and walling. It underlines the strong partnerships that
Kingspan Insulated Panels LLC has formed in the Middle East,
where ambitious infrastructure development projects are on-going.
ADCC’s Constantinos Demetriades, the project director, said:
“Kingspan Insulated Panels LLC’s capabilities were a perfect fit to
our needs, and together, we have achieved a remarkable milestone
in the history of aviation infrastructure development in the region.”
