Christine Tarantino-Dean, Executive Vice President, IFTSince 1939, IFT has been advancing the science of food and its application across theglobal food system by creating a dynamic forum where individuals from more than 95
countries can collaborate, network, learn, and contribute toward innovative solutions forthe benefit of people around the world. Today, we’ll learn about some of the new
programs IFT has to offer to its members.
10:15AM “Sustainable Sourcing—Challenges and Best PracticesTammy Archer, Director of Logistics, Sales and Marketing; Brenntag N ABrand loyalty from today’s consumers is increasingly based on corporate socialresponsibility including sustainability, a broad term that includes protection of theenvironment, the efficient use of resources, health and safety of workers andcustomers, fair labor practices, governmental compliance, and supply responsibility.“Sustainable sourcing” has become one of the most important criteria for makingpurchasing decisions in the food industry. Tammy Archer of Brenntag will talk about thechallenges of factoring in the environmental and social aspects of ingredient sourcingwhile maintaining an appropriate balance between business, ecology and social issues.
11:00 AM Update on North Carolina’s Implementation of FSMA RulesAnita MacMullan, Food AdministratorNC Department of Agriculture Food and Drug Protection DivisionOne of the key elements in the Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA) was toenhance partnerships and strengthen existing collaboration among all food safetyagencies, including state agencies. The NC Department of Agriculture’s Food and DrugProtection Division has a unique and important perspective on how our state will moveforward during the implementation of the FSMA. With all seven of the FDA’sfoundational rules finalized in 2015 and 2016, compliance dates are just around thecorner, beginning as soon as September 2016 for certain firms. Anita MacMullan willgive an update on how the two agencies are interacting and what to expect in theregulatory process.

Ted Andrew, Senior Director of Marketing, Roka Bioscience2015 was a record year for Listeria recalls and not in the usual suspect
commodities. Understanding your manufacturing environment and associated risk is acritical piece in developing an effective control and mitigation strategy. This
presentation will provide an overview of key components and simple changes that youcan make today to lower the risk state when it comes to environmental Listeria.
1:15 PM The Role of Packaging in a Sustainable Food SupplyFrank Edwards, Director Food Care Solutions Development,
Food Care R&D, Sealed AirFrom transport to processor to retailer to consumer, food waste is happening at every
step in the supply chain. When food is wasted, we lose everything that went intoproducing and transporting the food. It’s not just what you buy or consume, but all the
resources used to put it on your plate. This presentation will briefly highlight therelocation of Sealed Air's corporate headquarters to Charlotte, NC and will address
various important issues related to food waste and means to reduce it.

Frank Edwards is a native of Wilmington, NC and attended NC State Universitywhere he earned a BS in Biological Sciences and a MS in Food Science. He isa 35 year employee of Cryovac and Sealed Air where he held R&Dresponsibilities in a range of product lines including Cook-In Meats, VerticalPouch Packaging, Active Packaging, Shrink Films, Thermoforming Rollstock,and Vacuum Skin Packaging. Frank is currently responsible for working directlywith the R&D departments of Sealed Air's most strategic customers in the effortto collaboratively identify and develop new and valuable solutions for food andbeverage producers.
Ted Andrew joined Roka Bioscience in 2011 where he managed thedevelopment, launch, and commercialization of Roka’s fully automatedpathogen detection platform. He has held management positions in severalbioprocess companies including Catalent Pharma Solutions, New BrunswickScientific, Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Paratek Pharmaceuticals, & Ortho-McNeil.He holds a B.S. in Microbiology from Penn State University and a MastersCertificate in Bioinformatics from Northeastern University.
Anita MacMullan leads the NCDA Food and Drug Protection Division'smanufactured food program including all inspection, compliance,enforcement and emergency response activities. She has over 20 years'service with the division as an inspector, compliance officer and compliancesupervisor. Ms. MacMullan's career also includes three years with the FDAin the Division of Federal-State Relations as the Branch Director for Contractand Grants overseeing the distribution and management of funding tosupport state and local agency food safety efforts. Previous to entering intopublic service, she held positions in the biotechnology industry conductingresearch on industrial enzymes and biopesticides.
Tammy Archer has worked in the chemical distribution business for 28 yearsmanaging warehouses, barge terminals and currently the logistics departmentwithin Brenntag’s Global Sourcing Organization. She works with all the GSOcountries exploring and sourcing new products for Brenntag. Brenntag is theglobal market leader in chemical distribution with over 10,000 products and asupplier base of several thousand companies
Christie Tarantino-Dean joined the IFT as Executive Vice president in April2014 bringing more than 20 years of association management experienceto the Institute. She oversees a wide array of IFT programs that serve theInstitute’s 18,000 members. Prior to her role at IFT, she served aspresident of the Association Forum of Chicagoland, and as the executivedirector of the Academy of General Dentistry. She is a graduate of AuburnUniversity at Montgomery, where she earned her bachelor’s degree inpolitical science and her master’s of public administration.
