Bournemouth Walks
for you and your dog
Kindly supported by
Bournemouth Dogs is a non-profit project
for everyone who owns, or is thinking about
owning, a dog in Bournemouth. It aims to
work with dog owners to solve issues with
land mangers and in turn promote responsible
ownership.
This project works in partnership with Dorset
Dogs. They champion positive management
for dogs in town, coast and countryside and
promote responsible dog ownership.

Stour Valley Local Nature Reserve is a riverside walk along gravel
hard standing paths. There are three different trails you can
follow through areas of open grassland, meadows and woodland,
or alternatively you can wander along the river pathway. Cattle
graze different compartments throughout the year so leads may
be necessary through certain areas. Stour Valley also has two
dog beaches that provide priority access to pedestrians and dog
owners alike to enjoy the river. The Visitor Centre sits between
the car park and the river and provides information on the area,
refreshments and toilet facilities; with the wildlife-friendly garden
allowing dogs to enter on a lead.
Slades Farm consists of large open fields and a smaller wooded
area. There are tarmac paths that border these fields which is
suitable for mobility scooters and pushchairs. Slades Farm has
an enclosed dog playground which has various pieces of agility
equipment, alongside a grassy area and a couple of picnic benches.
There is a car park on site which is free to use for 3 hours.
Meyrick Park has a large grassy field that adjoins Meyrick Park
golf course. Dogs need to be kept to the paths when crossing the
golf course. The large field is also a rugby training ground which
is used early evening most nights of the week; games are usually
held on a Sunday. There is a small car park and on-road parking
when accessed from the north via Meyrick Park Crescent and on
road parking when accessed from the south via Central Drive.
A tarmac path runs around the outside of the large field, which is
divided for use by pedestrians and cyclists.
Queens Park is a multi-use area for dog walkers and golfers alike. All
users should take precaution when using certain areas and notice the
safety signs on site - these may advise on the direction of travel a golf
ball may come from. Golf balls can be travelling in excess of 100 mph.
There are many hidden dips and copses within the park that cause
blind spots, where golfers are unable to see walkers and walkers
can’t see golfers. There are suggested trail routes, to help you use the
park safely. Please remember that your dog should be under close
control in any park, whether it’s on a lead or not. If your dog will not
respond to a call to heel, it should be on a lead. If you are concerned
about sharig a space with golfers, there is a large field next to the car
park separate to the golf course. Free dog mess bags are available
from the golf shop. There is a large car park on site, Woodpecker
Café (seating available outside for dog walkers), and toilets
Redhill Park has a large open grassy field, with a small wooded
area at the far end. There is a tarmac car park off of Redhill
Drive and there are residential roads nearby that can be used
for parking too. Fox café is dog friendly and situated by the
children’s play area.
Millhams Mead Local Nature Reserve has free car parks at
either end of the reserve. There are various habitats to explore
including meadows, woodland and scrubby areas. There is a
small shallow river that runs across the reserve and meets
the main River Stour that borders one side. There are horses’
which graze the meadow adjacent to the River Stour. An old
tarmac road runs from one side of the reserve to the other and
there are a few gravel paths that take you around the reserve.

Iford Meadows is a small area of grassland and scrub that
borders part of the River Stour. Grazing animals can usually be
found on site between September and April. It is connected to the
back of Iford Playing Fields which is a big green grassy open space.
It does have car parking facilities or there is on road parking next to
Iford Meadows. Dogs will need to be on a lead across Iford Playing
Fields whilst sporting games are in play.
Sheepwash runs parallel to the River Stour and is a little area of
woodland and meadow. It has a cycle path that runs across the
length of the open space which is also suitable for pushchairs and
wheelchair users alike. Although there isn’t a car park, there is on
road parking on Riverside Avenue, the turning that goes towards
the Tesco Superstore car park.
Kings Park consists of large grassy fields with lots of space for
dogs to run around. There is a small café between the two main
fields for the public to use with toilets inside. There are several car
parks on site for the Football Stadium and Athletics Centre, which
are pay and display. A relatively quiet road runs alongside the
edge of the fields, note that this will be busy during Bournemouth
Football club home games. To the north-west of the park there is
a conservation area primarily made up of meadow and heathland
but there is also a small wooded area.
Strouden Woods is, as the name suggests, a wood-land area which
adjoins to an open grassy field. It has on road parking in residential
streets or is a short walk from Castlepoint Shopping Centre. There
is a cycle path and hard standing path that runs through the site,
which is suitable for wheelchair users.
Tuckton Tea Gardens and Riverlands is a large open green space
which is opposite the River Stour. It is made up of meadowland and
smaller wooded areas. There is a pay and display car park just past
Tuckton Library and you can also gain access via Wick Lane and
Tuckton Road. Tuckton Tea Gardens is adjacent to Riverlands and
the café is open all year-round excluding January and Christmas
Day. Dogs are required to be on a lead in the Tuckton Tea Gardens.
Hard surfaced paths run across the site making it suitable for
wheelchair and pushchair users.
Littledown Common is a strip of grass and woodland that extends
from Chaseside by Littledown Leisure Centre and joins up to Kings
Park on the other side. There are playgrounds at either end with
a hard-standing path that runs the length of the common making
it suitable for both pushchairs and wheelchairs. There is also a
separate cycle path. There is pay and display parking at Kings Park,
along with numerous residential roads surrounding the site. Please
be aware that the common is split in half by a road so dogs may
need to be put on a lead to cross.
