The answer to that is pretty much the same as the question of “size.” It depends who you ask. Of course, being a family trade publication, we’re talking about the length of songs. But you knew that, didn’t you? This topic surfaced, as it seems to every few years, after a radio edit of Keith Anderson’s latest single “Sunday Morning In America” began circulating among radio programmers. The original version, about 4:28, was later edited to just over four minutes. Arista/Nashville recently released a new version in the 3:30 range. Between versions one and three, there was plenty of programmer chatter about playing a record that long. So, we checked in with a few folks to find out whether the issue was Anderson’s song in particular, or songs that ran longer than four-minutes in general. According to our panel, the best news for the creative-types among our readership is that the days of “if it’s over 3:00 I ain’t playing it” are long gone. “If it’s a hit, I’ll play it if it’s 1:30 or 5:30,” asserts CBS Radio VP/Country and KILT/Houston PD Jeff Garrison, who also notes he examined four hours of drive time programming and only found two songs out of 38 that exceeded four minutes. He adds that the story songs for which this format is famous “have more to tell; it takes longer. ‘Alyssa Lies’ is the most recent big story song over four minutes.” (continued on page 5) Foster In; Collins Upped At KMLE Monday’s Country Aircheck Today reported that KNIX/ Phoenix had enlisted KSD-FM (The Bull)/St. Louis PD/PM driver Billy Greenwood to voice-track middays in place of MD/middayer Gwen Foster, who was heading to crosstown KMLE. As we suggested in the CAT, Gwen will indeed be doing more than middays at the Camel – she’ll also be the MD. She starts Wednesday and succeeds KMLE APD/MD Dave Collins, who will retain the APD post and who will be the PD of KMLE’s HD channel that is set to debut next week. KMLE PD Jay McCarthy said of the changes, “We are ecstatic that Gwen is coming back to Camel. Dave is a vital asset and resource to the station. Being able to lighten his load and get some help in the music department from someone of Gwen’s stature is something we’re all looking forward to.” Foster takes middays from Lisa Malay, who we told you last month was heading back to her childhood home in Missouri. This marks a return to the Camel for Foster. She was there in the mid-90s before joining then-KNIX sister and Country start-up KWCY in August 1997. Foster moved to KNIX in April 1999. Lansing PD McCrae Adds Flint Adding a two-hour commute every other day is Citadel WITL/ Lansing PD/midday host Jay J. McCrae, who has officially added PD responsibilities for Country sister WFBE/Flint, MI. McCrae will spend Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in Flint, while working in Lansing on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He’s also voice tracking nights at WITL. We told you earlier this afternoon that he’s also looking for someone to handle promotions, pm drive and production at WFBE.
