Does exercise make us happier? We all know that if we exercise our bodies, we will become fitter. Our muscles will be toned, work more efficiently and we will get stronger. But how does it affect our brains? Can it make us happier? Is this just a rumour or is it based in fact and measurable?

We all know that if we exercise

our bodies we will become fitter.

Our muscles will be toned, work more efficiently and we will get

stronger.

But how does it affect our brains?

Can it make us happier?

Page 4: Does exercise make you happier

When exercising, the heart starts to

pump the blood around the body at a higher rate.

This leads the brain to send messages to release the body’s ‘fight or flight’

response.

The brain releases 2 things to protect

itself from the perceived threat to it:

• a protein to protect us against stress;

• Endorphins that allow us to keep running.

The release of both of these brain chemicals have the effect

of leaving us feeling relieved and happier at the completion of the

‘flight or fight’.

Therefore...

Exercise makes us feel happier.

7 Simple tips to keep us motivated:1. Keep changing our routine to keep boredom out;2. Do more exercise to get the same hit. This is why we have to

build up our reps and time spent on them – but once it is at least thirty minutes at a time, we are winning;

3. Thirty minutes per day can be rearranged and altered once we do them;

4. Like drug hit withdrawal, we get to a stage where we don’t want to experience it, so we learn to avoid it. We experience withdrawal on cessation of exercise in the same way, so avoid it. Only take short, sharp breaks and move around in a different way on these breaks;

5. Find the exercise that suits us, or do a combo, to keep moving;6. As someone once said, “do what you are doing, only more of it”;7. Be conscious of how long we sit, then get up and move!
