We have recently reorganized the Picture Books. Where as they used to be shelved by the last name of the author, they are now shelved in beautiful blue bins by categories! This will make it easier for our littlesto browse their own books! Also, having them cate- gorized by subject makes it easier to grab several of a specific topic you might be look- ing for. For instance, if your child is all about princesses….you can now come straight to the princess bin, and grab a bunch that you know will be about princesses. Also we have bins to incorporate some of the favorite characters. For example if youre after a Thomas the Train book, he has his own bin. Its a very exciting time in the youth de- partment. If you are looking for a specific title, and youre now worried you wont know what bin to find it in…. no worries. Just check our catalog or ask a friendly staff member and we will look it up for you. The call number will let us know which bin to find it in. In the future we will be transferring our easy readers to a similar categoriza- tion, so be on the lookout for that! -Rozanna Bennett New in the Childrens Department Have you checked out your digital book collection here at the library, but availa- ble on your smart phone with an app called Libby? It only takes a few moments to set it up and you can start reading right away. I was able to put the Libby app on my phone and get it up and running in just a few minutes. You simply go to the App Store if you have an iPhone, or Google Play if you have an Android phone, then search for Libby and download and install the free program. Next, open Libby, search for the Dodge City Public Library and youre got Libby on your phone with almost 14,000 book titles to take with you wherever you want to go. You can search for available books by title, category or author. It s truly easy. If the book you really want to read is already checked out, you can simply place a hold on it so you are notified when it pops back up on the digital shelves. What I especially like is the mix of newer and older books. Current bestsellers abound, and I certainly have authors I like to stay up to date on, but sometimes I real- ly enjoy going back to a book Ive read ages ago. It reminds me of an old friend you catch up with after having been apart a while. I also appreciate it when I find an author I am unfamiliar with and then realize they have several books theyve written in the past (ah, binge reading). Your Dodge City Public Library is very receptive to suggestions of books to add to the digital collection as well. Let us know what youre looking for, and we will do all we can to help out. Meet Libby

Let’s talk about overdue fines. Most public libraries charge fines when books are overdue. The Dodge City Public Library has long

charged overdue fines. The purpose is to encourage patrons to return items on time so other people can access the items.

The fines are relatively small on a per item basis. For example, if you have one book returned five days overdue, your overdue fine

will be $.50. For many adults, who might only have one or two novels checked out at a time, this isn’t a big issue and they can afford

the fine. However, these small items can add up fast for children and families with multiple kids. A fine of $10, $20, or more can ac-

crue quickly. If a family is on a tight budget, the choice often made is to quit using the library instead of paying the fine.

As we evaluate our organization, we are increasingly concerned about the impact fines have on our organizational values. Specifical-

ly, we are concerned that fines hurt “access” and “growth/education”. If a family can’t afford to pay a $10 fine, it is highly unlikely

they are purchasing books for their children. Access to many books is a key factor in literacy development. Children with access to an

abundance of books are more likely to be strong readers and as we know, literacy skills have a huge impact on other areas of learn-

ing, development, and overall success.

DCPL Board and staff will continue to discuss the fine structure in place and consider changes. In the meantime, the library is holding

a fine forgiveness event from January 15th through February 17th. All items returned, no matter how long overdue, will have fines

forgiven. If a person has existing fines on an account, staff will forgive the fines as long as they update their account information. The

$5 fee for replacement cards will be waved during this time. We are also working with people who have lost items on their account.

Just call and talk with a library manager about your specific issue and we will work to get your account back to good standing.

Check out this ongoing promotion, including the “Baby Come Back” music video, on the library Facebook page.
