Mathematics TestsAvailable

in theUnited States

THIS PAMPHLET is a revision of a publication of the samename that was first published by the Council in 1959 and re-vised in 1968 and 1972 In 1972 the mathematics curriculumwas fairly stable. the issue of accountability was beginning toassume a Prominent role in many school districts, and a num-ber of elementary school programs had been developed withrather detailed behavioral obiectives Today, as we celebrateour 200th birthday, the elementary mathematics curriculumis less stable, accountability remains a very real issue, andinterest in behavioral objectives has declined to the pointwhere they .ot- rarely a topic of discussion In addition, de-clining test scores in the basic skill areas are making almostdaily headlines. and most public and private educational in-stitutions have found It necessary to do some fiscal belttightening

The primary purpose of this pamphlet is to Provide a com-prehensive listing of mathematics tests available in theUnited States that may assist educators in meeting theirevaluation needs The types of tests included in this pamph-let are listed in the Contents Tests covering mathematicsfrom the primary school through the first two Years of collegeare included A special effort was made to identify tests thatmight be useful for tumor college placement Publishersshould be aware that tew tests are available that are sensitiveto such placement needs The section on college-relatedlistings contains a few possibilities, and two programs de-signed specifically for Junior colleges are described under"Related Evaluation Services" on page 28

No attempt has been made in this edition to include eithertests that are designed for a particular text series or tests Pub-lished outside the United States, although the next edition ofthis Pamphlet is likely to be entitled "Mathematics TestsAvailable in the United States and Canada " Several newtests have been added to the 1972 listings. and a number ofthe 1972 listings that are now out of print have been re-moved Publishers whose tests appear in this pamphlet weregiven the opportunity to verify their listings for accuracy andcompleteness Although the current listing is intended to becomplete, new tests are always being developed The "Di-rectory of Publishers" on page 27 should be useful in gettinginformation on newly developed tests

The listing of a test does not constitute an endorsement bythe National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Teachersand curriculum specialists who are interested in a particulartest should request a sample copy from the publisher andexamine it carefully for relevance to the particular use in-tended

Although the primary purpose of the pamphlet is to pro-vide a listing of mathematics tests, the pamphlet also con-tains a number of descriptions of related evaluation services

1

that may be useful to educators These descriptions and ad-dresses follow the test listings and the "Directory ofPublishers

Information on the selection and use of tests is available inthe reterences cited in the final section of this pamphlet In-cluded in these ate the seven volumes of the Mental Meas-urements Yearbook series_ constituting the mator referencework on tests with comprehensive lists and reviews When areference is made to this source in the test listing, tt &Nearsimmediately below the publisher's name with a romannumeral identifying the volume and an arabic numeral iden-tifying the entry (not the page) Under American SchoolArithmetic Readiness Tests, tot eyamp(e. "V 456" is givenafter the name of the publisher This means that a review of.or a reterence to, these tests is found in the fifth yearbookunder entry 456

Information for each test is given in the following order

The Career Planning Program (CPP)

The Career Planning Program is a guidance-oriented sys-tem designed to hell, students identify and explore person-ally relevant occupations and educational programs Theprogram is designed to function at two levelsgrades 8-11

28 30

and grades 12-13 For grades 8-11, CPP was developed to as-sist schools in meeting many of the career guidance needs oftheir students. with the central goal of stimulating and facil-itating both self - exploration and career exploration TheNumerical Skills scale (25 items, 15 minutes) was developedto test the student-s ability to perform various kinds of basicarithmetic functions, such as addition, subtraction, multipli-cation and division

For grades 12- 13. CPP collects. integrates, and reports in-formation about the students interests, experiences, andabilities and through an interpretive student report and student booklet helps the student relate this information to ca-reer planning The Numerical Skills scale ( 16 items, 18minutes}, one of six CPP ability scales. is designed to assessbasic arithmetic skiffs ranging from simple computation tothe aPPhcation of mathematical principles The scale Is de-signed to assess mathematical reasoning rather than previouscoursessork and is Particularly useful for identifying studentsneeding remediation in mathematics

Comprehensive AchievementMonitoring

Comprehensive Achievement Monitoring (CAM) providestest results to teachers as information to help them make de-cisions about their students and then courses CAM uses crrterionreferenced test items (for which behavioral objectiveshave been previously defined), item - examinee sampling, andfrequent test administrations CAM provides information, analyzed and reported by computer, about individual stu-dents' achievement on each objective before instruction, immediately after instruction, and long after instruction, and about a group's achievement on all course objectives ateach test administration

As part of the process of working with school districts andstate departments of education in developing criterion-re-ferenced mathematics tests, a bank of objectives and testitems has been compiled These objectives and items areavailable in booklet form Also a -Minimum CompetencyLevel- mathematics test has been developed
