FINAL PROJECT DUE: Tuesday, June 21st
Middle AdulthoodErikson’s stage:
GENERATIVITY versus STAGNATION
Adults at midlife are most typically characterized by a new perspective of who they are and a new perspective about their world, including:A new definition of selfNew expectations about what they want to
accomplishNew satisfactions in living
Why career goals may change in mid-life:
The individual cannot perform the duties of a job. Adults decide that their work is not meaningful to
them anymore and search for a different, more meaningful career.
The individual may believe they have succeeded as much as possible in a job.
A change may come when children are “launched” and there is more time to commit to a career.
Displaced homemakers may be forced into the job market by the circumstances of divorce or widowhood.
Workers may be laid off due to economic pressures.Source: Newman & Newman (2001).Source: Newman & Newman (2001).
Social System
Social System – “a system is any set of elements that affect or influence one another; a social system is one in which the factor that influences the system and its components are people” (Ashford,
LeCroy & Lortie, p. 116).

Late Adulthood (60-death)
Erikson’s theory: INTEGRITY versus DESPAIR“As older adults, some can look back with a feeling of integrity — that is, contentment and fulfillment, having led a meaningful life and valuable contribution to society.
Others may have a sense of despair during this stage, reflecting upon their experiences and failures. They may fear death as they struggle to find a purpose to their lives, wondering “What was the point of life? Was it worth it?”
