Preface

SCHURTER decided to create an Apple iPad-App for ELECTRONICA 2012. ViaMedici offered a standard approach for catalog generation. We adapted this with SCHURTER-specific extensions in a Specification.

Newly the CatApp will be available for Apple iOS [9], Android [10] and WIN 10 [11] Devices and can be downloaded in the respective Shop.

Initially SCHURTER decided to offer In-house-App to distribute the CatApp outside the Apple-Store. The CatApp will be available from a SCHURTER-Server. Based on the current data set it will take newly approx. 1 minutes do download and install the CatApp. Then the actual catalog data will need to be updated acc. Instruction in Chapter 12.

All known issues will be mentioned within the newly established Landing Page for CatApp [8] The Test List [1] has been replaced with a Kanban board to maintain the further development according the established Roadmap [2].

1 Installation of the App on a desired Device

The Installation will be started with a click on the given link [3, 9, 10, 11]. The actual catalog will then need to be installed within the menu Settings in order to offer latest data. It can be further actualized to the newest releases.

The in-house version [3] will be announced by sending mail to your mail client. The shown icon of the App “SCHURTER Range at a Glance” will appear on your device and the download of the CatApp starts. The procedure is same for iPad and iPhone.

The SCHURTER CatApp requires approx. 800 MB for all Product information in PDF-Format in DE and EN and is working on newest devices respectively starting back to iPad 2.0 and iPhone 5.0. Please assure to have enough free memory, a fast wireless access.

Please notice that Apple requires to accept first the certificate of SCHURTER before you can start using the In-house CatApp.

Now the CatApp is ready to use. The actual available catalog data need to be installed as a first step. Therefore move into the menu settings and update the offered catalog Data (Details see chapter 12.

2 Differences iPad/iPhone

The iPad offers more space on the display than the iPhone and therefore it is possible to see landscape (see Image 7) and normal display (see Image 8) while the iPhone CatApp offers only normal display (see Image 10). The screen offers four different areas: top menu, navigation, content and bottom menu (see Image 7). The iPhone offers only to display either the navigation or the content in the display.

The Navigation can be displayed with swiping in the content area from left to the right. If it shall be hidden it can be done by swiping with the finger from the right to the left. The navigation is same drill down version as it is now offered in the content area with a tail navigation. The Product group in the tail navigation leads to the index (see chapter 0) to see product images for further selection.

3 iPad Landscape/Normal

The catalog can use normal (see Image 8) and landscape (see Image 7) display.

The Bottom Menu offers different features beside the catalog like bookmarks (see chapter 6.1), search (see chapter 8) or index (see chapter 0).

4 Catalog Structure

The catalog structure is similar to the information on the SCHURTER Catalog on the Website [4]. It has a hierarchical architecture based on a product hierarchy. Having 8 top level menus (See Image 9; Home, Input Systems, Circuit Protection, Equipment Connection, Switches, EMC Products, Other Products and Electronic Manufacturing Services. The top levels contain a virtual image and a teaser. Indicating what is offered in this section, together with a reference to the respective online-level (See Image 8).

You are in the catalog if the symbol “Product” in the Bottom Menu is highlighted blue.

The top levels are followed by the group resp. subgroups level e. g. Resettable Fuse, Fuseholders etc. (see Image 7 as a reference for the sublevel of Equipment Connection). These sublevels show a similar overview page as mentioned for the main level with similar content on the iPad. The content pages will not be shown on the iPhone (see Image 10).

Please click the button “back” to return to the higher level. Alternatively you can also use the tail navigation in the Content area.

4.1 Home

The home menu (see Image 9) offers the SBU view with addition new Products.

4.2 Navigation information on Product Group /Subgroup- Level

The product selection takes either place in the Navigation area where the overviews of the available Products are listed with the most important selection attributes for each product. The sort order of the listed products is same for iPad, iPhone and Web. Alternatively you can also drill down in the content area within the iPad.

4.3 Product Display

The products are described with photo and the most important technical features. All available variants are listed as well as the mating components (mating connectors and accessory) if available (see Image 11). Following product description elements are available:

1. Product photo, including approval logos and specific symbols (e.g. connectors) – can be enlarged, if more than one is available, The gallery is scrollable

2. Type Title (a short Product description)

3. Description of the most important product features

4. Technical details – the most important technical attributes of the product

5. Weblinks to HTML datasheet (only accessible with wireless access)

6. Internal link to PDF document

7. Table of variants with detailed description and available part numbers

8. Mating Parts if available

9. Accessory if available

10. References (e.g. if a product has replacement

The top menu (see Image 11) offers to additional functions. The star-symbol offers to bookmark the products (details about bookmarks see chapter 6.1) and the envelop symbol offers to send a mail referencing the opened product (details about emails see chapter 7).

The download icon shows a rectangle with an arrow (see Image 13) when no previous download has been applied. If a download was done then the icon shows an eye (see Image 11). A further click on the eye icon pops up the PDF document (details see 6.2)

The various categories (Variants, Accessories, Mating Parts, and References) can either be opened or closed. The – resp. + at the right end of the category header allows to open/close. A click on the offered image leads you to the referenced product.

All Information available on the iPad is also available on the iPhone.

4.4 Implemented Improvements

Especially for the cord sets it is important to see both ends. This required that we show two pictures. The Image can be clicked to enlarge. It will then offer the functionality to see more product photos if available by using the arrows in the top menu to see other pictures if available. If no further pictures are available the scrolling will not start.

5 Comments

The function to make comments to the products is available. It is offered together with bookmarks and Mail sending in a detail box in the top menu. The overview shows the number of available comments. If you tip onto the symbol the comments will show up. Comments will be kept even if new update is installed. They will be lost of course if you delete your catalog. This supports your individual catalog.

The function supports copy paste and allows to include links e.g. to PCN or the like. If some occurrences need to be documented.

6 Bookmarks

Bookmarks can be set in the top menu with a click onto the star-icon. It will then change to yellow. It can help to prepare a customer visit with intended products to be proposed.

6.1 Bookmarked Products

Bookmarks are listed in the order of selection and cannot be sorted yet. They can be deselected /deleted by pressing the edit button in the top menu (see Image 14) or by selecting the bookmark and pressing again onto the star symbol in the top menu (see Image 11).

6.2 Opened PDF Documents

Currently all data sheets are available with extra installed Acrobat PDF reader (Please assure previous installation)

This approach offers also to send data sheets directly by using Acrobat Reader. Double click on home button to return to the SCHURTER app. All opened PDF-data sheets remain in the bookmark menu (see 6.26.2 Opened PDF Documents)

7 Sending Mails

Actually it is a sales CatApp that allows the user to send a mail based on a selected product with the necessary reference. The name of the product will be used in the context (see Image 17)

Alternatively you can open the PDF-Document and open it with your e-mail client. This will attach the PDF data sheet immediately. We recommend to maintain the e-Mail signature in order to keep clear where the information comes from.

8 Search

The full text search function is a very supportive feature to get necessary information. The search can be entered by partial phrases. No additional “*” is required. The search logic is speed optimized that means searches for partial phrases will be applied with none obvious result order

Following information is searchable:

- Type name

- Part numbers

- Type Title

- Descriptions

- Attributes

- Variant Description

A click onto a search result will open the product details in the full view.

9 Index

The index is a very powerful alphabetic sorted overview of the offered content. The alphabet on the right side of the navigation offers a short jump in. The index contains:

- Type names (incl. part numbers of selectable parts in the navigation) - Product group names ( e.g. Connector (Inlet/Outlet)) - Indication of all new products - Medical products - Lead free products - RoHS conform products - China RoHS-conform products - Halogen free products - UL listed products - UR recognized products - ENEC listed products - VDE listed products - CCC listed products - CQC listed products - CSA listed products - Phase Out products

10 Settings

The settings are mainly relevant to check the version or change the language. Terms and contact are maintained but are not yet very helpful, as it is a sales tool.

10.1 Change Language

The App is available in German and English. It is possible to change the language any time, it will take effect immediately. The App closes and has to be restarted in order to initialize correctly.

11 Updates and Download

The CatApp will be available for Apple iOS [9], Android [10] and WIN 10 [11] Devices and can be downloaded in the respective Shop. The access will be assured on a Landing Page called CatApp [11] within the menu Services [6].

All Information about the project progress will currently be summarized on Lotus Notes [5] and on Partner Service [6] collected and maintained by the administrator. Please feedback any topic to the admin [7] until we release this platform to the web.

11.1 Update of Catalog Information

In version 5.1 we added an update function, which allows to update the catalog data on a recurring basis without reinstalling CatApp.

After installing CatApp, switch to the Settings menu to check the catalog data. In it you will find the button "update now". After activation, the CatApp connects to the repository where the most current data is made available. These are now loaded into the CatApp.

The download of the complete catalogue takes about 20 minutes (depending on the bandwidth of the transmission connection). Subsequent updates at a later date, on the other hand, can be carried out much faster (depending on the changed data provision). You can activate the update at any time. If there is no current status, the activation is immediately closed. The process can also be interrupted at any time and repeated at a later date.

If the function of the CatApp changes, a new version must be installed first. Please also check the deployment page where the latest versions are available for the respective target devices.

12 Android Specific information

The download progress will be indicated and the downloaded CatApp will be available in the download folder. Please assure that external Apps (Unknown Sources) will be accepted within the settings to start the App. Application and opening PDF in external Acrobat Reader works same as for Apple devices.
