ABSTRACTThe Wyoming Comprehensive Occupational Education
Program (K through community college) focuses on positive workattitudes and job-entry skills. In kindergarten through grade six, occupational attitudes are incorporated into the existing elementaryschool curriculum. A career-orientation program is designed forgrades seven and eight that provides occupational information, jobinterests and aptitudes, job applications and interviews, and thefuture employment outlook. Students are supplied with the WyomingOccupation Resource Kits (WORK) from the State Department ofEducation. Career exploration is the theme in grades nine and ten;students are provided with the opportunity to explore variousoccupational clusters and to establish a tentative choice ofoccupational goal by age 16. This is followed by the development ofcareer preparation broad skill programs in grades 11 and 12 thatencourage the development of cooperative education programs:industrial cooperative education, distributive education, cooperativeoffice education, cooperative agriculture occupations, cooperativeservice occupations, and diversified occupations. Postsecondary(grades 13 and 14) and adult education programs fortraining/retraining are provided by the community colleges. (EA)

Education has three m
ajor goals: personal(self-im
age)developm
ent, citizenship development and occupational
development.
We have too long fragm
ented education into mythical
divisions of academic, general and vocational education.
Nationally, our schools have too long concentrated
oncollege preparatory program
s and have disregarded the factthat the great m
ajority of graduates do not enter college.
Sixty percent of our young people go directly to work
after high school.
Most individuals, including businessm
en, labor leaders, teachers, and parents have taken the attitude that jobeducation is designed for som
ebody else's children.
We have erroneously prom
oted the idea that the only goodeducation
isa
four-yearcollege
education.Som
eoccupations require a four-year college education w
hileothers require different preparation.
Itis

allchildren.
Occupational guidance services are a m
ust.
Our dropout rates at the public school and
college levelsare a reason for concern.
To be successful in w
ork,everyone needs attitudes, skills,
understandings,basic
tools and competencies. (T
heseinclude the language arts, social studies, and
computational
skills.)
A com
prehensive occupational educationprogram
beginsin kindergarten or preschool and continues
throughoutlife. W
hether a child goes toa university, a com

college or directly into the world of w
ork, thefact rem
ainsthat one day he w
ill work. In order to be
successful, allchildren need certain attitudes and job-entry skills.
