Docsvault Installation Guide2

Installing DocsvaultThis section provides step-by-step instructions to install Docsvault Server and Client.

Please read the following information carefully.

All the steps are performed on Windows 7 and the steps and screens may differ slightly depending on your OperatingSystem.

Firewall Warning:Firewall applications can prevent communication between Docsvault Client and Server. Follow the steps below to ensure thatproper firewall rules have been created to allow Docsvault traffic to pass through the firewall.

1. If your firewall is application based (ex: Windows Firewall, Norton, McAfee, etc. ) The following Docsvault executables i.e Docsvault server and client along with the necessary MS SQL Server executablesshould be added to the exemptions/allowed list of the firewall. Docsvault installer automatically adds the necessaryexecutables to the firewall exception list for the built-in Windows firewall.

Docsvault Client side: dvClient.exe (by default located at C:\Program Files\Docsvault <edition>\Client\)

Docsvault Server side: dvServer.exe (by default located at C:\Program Files\Docsvault <edition>\Server\)

sqlservr.exe (by default located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.DOCSVAULT\MSSQL\Binn\ (Note: Replace MSSQL10_50.DOCSVAULT by your actual SQL instance folder if you used your own SQL server to hostDocsvault db)

sqlbrowser.exe (by default located at "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\<90 or 100>\Shared\")

2. If your firewall is port based or if you require port forwarding from your router to the Docsvault server

Open/forward the following ports:

TCP Port 3831: To allow connection to the Docsvault Server Service (dvServer.exe)

UDP Port 1434:This SQL Server Browser service listens for incoming connections to a named instance of SQL serverhosting Docsvault db and provides the client the TCP port number that corresponds to that named instance.

TCP Port for SQL server instance hosting Docsvault database:The Docsvault's instance of SQL server listens on a dynamic port (between 49152 & 65535) selected randomly by the SQL server. The SQL clients first connect to the browserservice (port# 1434) to know the exact port number a named instance of SQL server is listening to for the requested database.

To learn how to find out the current port number used by SQL SERVER, see

Installing Docsvault Server and Client on the same machineIt is fine to install both the server and the client on the same machine for testing and for occasional usage by the admin. Howeverit is NOT recommended to use the client installation on server for normal daily usage. The Docsvault server will be servingmultiple clients in the network and hence it is advisable to install it on a dedicated machine where no user works normally.

Installing Docsvault 5

Installing Docsvault Server & Desktop Client

Choosing the Server ComputerDocsvault does not need any special server grade computer if you are a small group of 5 - 10 users. You can designate anydedicated PC with a good processor, ample Memory (2 GB+) and enough available hard drive space for storing files imported inDocsvault. It is recommended that the Docsvault server be installed on a dedicated machine where no user works normally. Thiswill avoid interference from other user interactive applications and prevent any possible performance deterioration.

Optional Components Installed Automatically By Docsvault by user's choice

· MS SQL Server 2014 Express: If you do not have any existing sql server database in your network, you can instruct the'Docsvault Configuration Wizard' to automatically download and install a free MS SQL Server 2014 Express Advanced Servicesedition.

Installing Docsvault Server

This procedure outlines all of the steps necessary for you to perform a brand new installation of Docsvault.

Part I - Installation of Program Files

· Log in to Windows using an account with administrative rights (or rights to install software)

· Run the installation file Docsvault_<edition>_Server.msi and follow the on screen instructions

· On the License Agreement page, read the license agreement and if you accept the license terms click on I Accept, and thenclick the Next button.

· Select Installation Folder: Installation folder contains the program files for Docsvault Server application. By default the installerwill choose 'C:\Program files\Docsvault <edition>\ Server\'. You can change the location of program folder by clicking on theBrowse button. It is recommended that you keep the default path as this folder will contain only the program files, NOT the actualdata imported into Docsvault.

· Click on Next button to go to the 'Confirm Installation' window.

· On completion click the Close button. You can now launch the Docsvault Server Manager from the desktop icon to start theserver configuration wizard.

Part II - Configuration of Docsvault Server

When you start the 'Docsvault Server Manager' for the first time after installation, the 'Server Configuration Wizard' will startautomatically. This wizard includes the following steps:

Step 1: Installing/Selecting a Database First you will be asked to specify a SQL Server 2014 Express Database. You can either specify your own Microsoft SQL to hostthe database or allow Docsvault to install a new Microsoft SQL 2014 Express instance on your machine.

Page 6: Document Management Software Help: Docsvault · Document Management System for everyone Installation Guide Desktop and Web Client & Mobile App Intelligent Data Capture Email Automation

Docsvault Installation Guide6

v Letting Docsvault install a New MS SQL Server Express Instance

· Select this option to allow Docsvault to install a MS SQL Server 2014 Express instance

· Specifying Docsvault Administrator User Password

Enter a password for Docsvault administrator user 'admin'. Note: that the same password will also be used for a SQL user named

'DVSBSA' inside the sql database. This user DVSBSA is used to connect clients to the Docsvault database hosted by the SQL

server. This is done for the sake of simplicity during initial configuration. You may change the Docsvault 'admin' user password to

anything later on from the Server Manager dialog.

Strong Password RequirementsMost domain based networks and Server OS require a strong password. If you provide a weak password that does not match thepassword policy of your domain or server OS, SQL installation will fail. It is a good idea to use a strong password even if you arenot restricted by such password policies since this password will be used to connect Docsvault clients in the network to the SQLserver.

· Selecting Database & Documents Location

The installer will create a 'DVSB Data' folder at the location specified for Data Storage. Select a drive that has plenty of free

space available as this folder will grow in size as more and more documents are imported in the future.

Note: Due to SQL server database limitations, networked shared folders and NAS devices cannot be used to store Docsvault

data. We recommend that you use an internal hard drive to store your data as they are more reliable than the external hard

drives.

· Click on Next button to continue.

During installation you will have a choice of creating a new website or use an existing website on that machine to host the DocsvaultWeb Application. In most cases you will be creating a new website.

o Create new website

Host Name:This is the domain or subdomain you will be using to access the Docsvault Web Application from the Internet. By default, Docsvaultwill use the local IP address of your machine as the hostname with a port number of 80. We recommend that you proceed withthese values and change them later on from the IIS interface to specify your own domain name and to secure your web connectionsusing an SSL certificate.

Docsvault Server Name:If the Docsvault Server is installed on the same machine as well, the Docsvault Server Name will be filled in automatically with thevalue localhost. If you are installing this Web Application on a separate machine, fill in the hostname or IP address of the machinerunning the Docsvault Server. Click on next to complete the installation.

Note: If you are using the Docsvault web application within your own website you may want to choose the right folder withinyour website folder to install the program files to. However, doing this is optional. If you are using a firewall on this machine, youwill need to create incoming rules to allow access to this machine on TCP port 80 for regular traffic and TCP port 443 for SSLencrypted secure traffic. We recommend use of secure traffic using an SSL certificate.

A secure SSL based connection is required to access your Docsvault repository using your iOS and Android apps.

Configuring Access From The Internet

You now need to configure your own domain name to access the Docsvault Web Application from outside your office. For this youwill need to do the following

1. Bind an existing domain name you own to the Docsvault web application from the IIS window

2. Login to your Router Web Interface and forward port 80 for regular traffic or port 443 for secure encrypted traffic

3. Change the A record of your domain or subdomain to point to the public IP address of your Internet connection assigned to your

Internet Router. You may need the help of your domain provider or hosting company to accomplish this step.

Domain Name Binding & SSL Certificates

To ensure a secure access to your Docsvault web application you will need to use an SSL certificate. An SSL certificate is a digitalcertificate that authenticates the identity of a website and allows secure encrypted connections from your web server to a browser. You will need to get your SSL certificate from a trusted Certification Authority. Fortunately, SSL certificates are very inexpensivethese days and a simple web search for buying an SSL certificate should give you plenty of options to choose from.

No matter where you buy your certificate from, you will need to create a certificate request from the IIS manager first. To do this, click on the Server Certificates icon in your IIS Manager.

Server Certificates

Page 23: Document Management Software Help: Docsvault · Document Management System for everyone Installation Guide Desktop and Web Client & Mobile App Intelligent Data Capture Email Automation
