    1. Adaptive Services named Network Library of the YearDC Public Librarys Adaptive Services Division was one of two libraries

    named Network Library of the Year by the National Library Service for

    the Blind and Physically Handicapped, a division of the Library of

    Congress. A luncheon was held at the Library of Congress for the

    department staff to honor their work promoting independent reading

    and learning, innovative use of technology, and good customer

    service.

    2. Salary Increase for DC Public Library EmployeesIn June Mayor Gray announced a 3% pay increase for city employees,

    including DC Public Library staff. Additional 3% increases will go into

    effect in FY2015, FY2016, and FY2017. The salary increase

    recognizes staff that library employees have gone without a salary

    increase for several years. We are hopeful that this will be an incentive

    for staff to continue to grow and flourish.

    Tour de DCPL Riders at Shepherd Park Neighborhood Library

    3. Tour de DCPLThe fourth annual Tour de DCPL bikeride took place on June 8, 2013. 44library users explored fiveneighborhood libraries: Takoma Park,Juanita E. Thornton/Shepherd Park,Lamond-Riggs, Woodridge, and Mt.Pleasant. Each location and theirFriends group participated in the rideby offering branch tours andrefreshments. Washingtoniana and theDC By the Book Program alsocontributed by creating Spoke Cardsand trivia for the ride featuring localhistory, and DC By the Book titles andselected passages.

    5. Founders OnlineOn June 13 Chief Librarian Ginnie Cooper attended the invitation-only launch of Founders Online

    (www.founders.archives.gov) at the National Archives, hosted by Archivist of the United States David S.Ferriero. Founders Online was created through a cooperative agreement between the National Archives

    National Historical Publications and Records Commission and the University of Virginia Press. The site

    offers access to thousands of original records from George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander

    Hamilton, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. For the first time, users can freely access

    these documents, many of which have never before been published.

    4. Books and BitesFor the second year, Books and Bites is

    at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial

    Library. Each Wednesday from

    11:30AM to 2:00PM food trucks park in

    front of the library. Eaters can relax at

    chairs and tables under the overhangand use the librarys wireless to check

    out e-materials and put items on hold.

    When they are finished eating they can

    pop into the library to sign up for a li-

    brary card, pick up items, or use one of

    6. Naturalization Ceremony atMount Pleasant

    A US Citizenship and Immigration

    Services (USCIS) naturalizationceremony was held for twenty immigrants

    from eleven countries at the Mount

    Pleasant Neighborhood Library on June

    6. New citizens attended the ceremony

    with their family and friends to take the

    Oath of Allegiance to the United States

    and to receive their Certificate of Naturali-

    zation. The library was proud to be able

    New US Citizens at the USCIS Naturalization Ceremony

    7. Libraries receive Royal Institute of British Architects International AwardThe Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) honors outstanding work done by RIBA members outside of

    the European Union. Francis A. Gregory Neighborhood Library and William O. Lockridge/Bellevue

    Neighborhood Library, both designed by British architect David Ajaye of Adjaye Associates were awarded

    two of the twelve awards for 2013.
