GUIDELINES FOR DOCTORAL QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS IN
THE AREA OF PERFORMANCE

he purpose of the !ualifying examinations is to test the students" #readth of $no%ledge on a
%ide variety of su#&ects in the field of music and their a#ility to %or$ %ith artistic, theoretical
and musicological aspects of musical compositions. 'hile preparing for the examinations, it
is expected that the student %ill #e motivated #y a spirit of intellectual curiosity and
exploration rather than #y the necessity of fulfilling minimum re!uirements.
he !ualifying examinations in the area of performance comprise five sections(
1. Music History Essys!
A. A prepared topic related to performance; exact question not known until exam.). *nprepared essay !uestion on 'estern music from classical anti!uity to the present.
+tudents are re!uired to choose one out of three essay !uestions.
". Music T#$ory! he music theory exam is composed of one prepared and one unprepared
component. he !uestion for the prepared component is announced one month prior to the
doctoral !ualifying examination dates, and may #e concerned %ith the analysis of a
su#stantial musical composition from any period or style. he unprepared analysis !uestion
involves the formal analysis of a movement from a classical period composition e.g. a
movement from a piano sonata, cham#er %or$, symphony or concerto #y -aydn, o/art or)eethoven.
%. Sty&$ I'$(ti)ictio(! +tudents are expected to %rite a short paragraph that includes their
o#servations a#out the style, genre, date and place of composition, compositional school and
the composer of five singlesheet excerpts and five aural examples. lthough students are
expected to identify the composer for each excerpt, it is more important to provide convincing
reasons for their ans%ers. he excerpts can #e from any period or style in the field of 'estern
music.
*. T$r+i(o&o,y! +tudents are expected to provide short definitions for 2023 terms in the
field of 'estern music.

. iven the soprano part, harmoni/e i.e. to set for four voices a chorale of approximately
512 measures in the style of J. +. )ach.
). Reali/e a figured #ass, %hich includes chromaticism.

In the Music History Essay section, Turkish-instrument performance maors are
required to prepare a topic on !estern art music from classical antiquit" to the
present, a#out which a question will #e asked at the exam.
$or the second essa" question, the student will choose one out of three questions
related to the student%s music &enre 'e.&. Turkish folk music, Turkish makam music().
he Music T#$ory exam is composed of one prepared and one unprepared
component. he prepared !uestion is the same for all performance ma&ors as
explained a#ove. he second !uestion the unprepared analysis !uestion %ill involve
a transcription and the analysis of a piece related to the student"s music genre.
6n the Sty&$ I'$(ti)ictio( section, the percentage of the !uestions %ill #e as follo%s(
*+ from an" period or st"le in the field of !estern music, *+ from an" period or
st"le in the student%s music &enre. The student will write the answers #ased on ten
aural examples.
6n the T$r+i(o&o,y section, the percentage of the !uestions %ill #e as follo%s( 30
from any period or style in the field of 'estern music, 30 from any period or style inthe student"s music genre.
Taksim Composition. The student will compose and notate a taksim that would #e
appropriate to precede a particular composition in one of the most common makams.
