Diagnosis and Treatment Planning Using CBCT in
Orthodontics
ConebeamCT(CBCT)hasbecomeanincreasinglyimportant
sourceofthreedimensional(3D)volumetricdatainclinical
orthodonticssinceitsintroductionintodentistryin1998.Since
thenithasdevelopedasanimportanttechniquefordiagnosis,
treatmentplanningandtreatmentoutcomeassessment.The
advantagesofCBCToverconventionalradiographyputusin
apositionofdecidingwhenandhowtouseit.Howmuchdo
wegainwithCBCT?orwhatwearemissingwithoutit?What
aretheselectioncriteria,andwhatisthelowdoseprotocol
(FOVandresolution)forusingCBCTfordifferentorthodontic
questions?Thepurposeofthispresentationistohighlightthe
currentunderstandingof,andevidencefor,theclinicaluseof
CBCTinorthodontics;andtoreviewthefindingstoanswer
clinicallyrelevantquestions.Radiationandincidentalfindings
areaconcernwiththeclinicaluseofthisimaging.Justification,
referralcriteria,qualityassuranceandoptimizationprotocols
arebeingdeveloped.Theneedtoimageshouldbemadeon
acase-by-casebasisfollowinganassessmentofbenefitsvs.
risksofscanning.Theadvantagesoverroutineradiographs
inalteringdiagnosisandtreatmentdecisionneedstobe
demonstrated.TheproblemwiththeuseofCBCTis
incompleteefficacyknowledge,andlackofawareness
ofefficacy.Atthesametimethereisafinancialpressure
withmarketingandevenpeerpressuretoobtainthelatest
instrument.
ThispresentationwillreviewCBCTindicationsonuneruptive
displacedteethsuchascaninedisplacement,untanglingthe
transverseproblem,assessingboneboundariesandworkflow
forvirtualorthographicplanningwiththeintegrationofdental
modelfromintra-oralscanner.
