Sermon Notes:A Meal With Jesus ~ Luke 5:27-32

“Meal as Grace”

Overview +Food Important to Us

From massive spending, consumption, and dieting to celebrity chefs & “foodies”

Food matters to us more than we realize. Food is more than “fuel.”

Is food important to Jesus?

+The Son of Man Came…(finish this sentence)

“not to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

“to seek and save the lost.” Luke 19:10

“eating and drinking.” Luke 7:34

Jesus labeled a drunken pig. Jesus “the party animal”?!?

+Luke’s Themes of Eating

Luke focuses on the little things that we might overlook in the life of Jesus

For us we experience this life between Sundays—which is the majority of life.

“In Luke’s gospel Jesus is either going to a meal, at a meal or coming from a meal.”

Luke 5—Meal as grace—“Eating with tax collectors & sinners”

Tax collectors were collaborators with Rome. Rome is an enemy of God.

Luke 5 Jesus touches a leper. Touching a leper made you unclean.

Except in this case the leper becomes clean.

Jesus has a contagious holiness.

Do you live as a Christian with a contagious holiness?

More than a meal is at stake. It is collision of two worlds. Yet, all of these great and big things are happening in the everyday, ordinary, and common setting of a meal.

Tony Campolo’s Story “Anyone Can Be a Christian”

Do you believe that statement, anyone can be a Christian?

Or do you believe you have to be a certain kind of person to be a Christian?

Do you believe God’s kingdom is still showing up in surprising ways & his grace still going to “out of bounds places?

Where are the ordinary everyday (meals) where God might be calling you to go and be an agent of grace?
