69 NTT DOCOMO Technical Journal Vol. 15 No. 2 High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) decoding software developed by NTT DOCOMO was exhibited at the NAB Show held from Monday, April 8, to Thursday, April 11, 2013, in Las Vegas, USA. Sponsored by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), the NAB Show is the largest exhibition devoted to broadcast equipment in the world. This year, over 90,000 personnel from more than 1,500 companies came from all over the world with their enthusiasm to visit. The HEVC decoding software that NTT DOCOMO exhibited decodes moving-pictures that were compressed using the new HEVC video compression format (H.265 | ISO/IEC 23008-2) approved as an international standard in January 2013, and plays them on general video players on mobile devices, computers or other devices. This software supports real-time playback of Full HD *1 videos on smart- phones, and on general computers it can also play 4K videos, equivalent to four times the resolution of Full HD, at 60 fps. This software is being licensed to enterprises in Japan and overseas, and numerous applications have been received thus far. NTT DOCOMO’s exhibit at the NAB Show was real- ized in response to requests to use the DOCOMO software decoder from four corporations – eBrisk/Altera, Harmonic, NTT and Thomson Video Networks – that developed soft- ware for encoding motion-pictures in HEVC. One of the main exhibits at each of the four companies’ booths featured video material that had been encoded using each company’s technology and was being played back for visitors using NTT DOCOMO’s HEVC decoding software (Photo 1). The showcases of HEVC were busy from start to finish, and visitors posed many questions about NTT DOCOMO’s decoding software. The NAB Show became an excellent occasion for NTT DOCOMO to pro- mote its new HEVC decoding software. Details of the HEVC decoding software can be found on NTT DOCOMO’s website [1].
